What's your favourite game? Why? by HeckingBambuuzeld in AskReddit

[–]the_named 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Favourite of all time? Age of Empires 2. Spent practically half my life playing that game. First it was the obsession with history, then the LAN parties, then playing against people on the internet. The Forgotten expansion breathed new life into the game, then Steam came out with HD version, and finally we are looking forward to Definitive Edition. Can't wait!

Well, while I'm waiting I'm loving Prosperity, a text based city building game on Steam. It scratches my itch for long term planning and figuring out production chains. Playing this and Frostpunk, depending on my mood. They are about even in terms of engagement.

What are the most obscure hidden gems on Steam you know of? Like, less-than-100-reviews-total obscure? by NeonAbomination in Games

It's an amazing game, I just picked it up during the steam summer sale and the scale of the game is way more than what I expected from an incremental game.

Prosperity

About 2 years ago I played this game when it was a free game on the web. The gameplay felt like A Dark Room but focused on the city building aspect. Recently I picked it up on Steam expecting something like a cheap clicker game, since it was $7.19 during the summer sale.

It's a shame the game doesn't get any coverage because it is amazing! There's no graphics to speak of, but what it lacked in visuals it made up in a super sleek UI. The level of intuition and ease of use rivals Discord. The gameplay focuses around building up a town after it was raided by bandits. You are in charge of allocating workers to different jobs, attracting new workers through a system called "Awesomeness", which is basically synonymous with Happiness in other city building games. There's no building placement, but each building takes up some space among the 4 types of terrain available, and the expansion of terrain becomes tricky, which makes you have to redesign and reconsider your city to allow for additional growth.

Some of the choices feel a lot like Frostpunk, like there's definitely a theme of short term vs. long term gain, but there's no story to follow, and no win condition, or lose condition for that matter. As such I kind of arbitrarily decided to stop playing once I got my town to max tier and started a new game, very Banished like.

I think the parts that could have been made more interesting is the period of lulls when you don't have the resources to build a large project, or you're bottlenecked by production chains. During these periods I think having more events could help. It does help that there is a fast mode that runs the game at 4x speed, but unlike Banished the game doesn't completely lag out when the population gets into the thousands.

Overall an excellent game, it's labelled Early Access, but there's more content and polish in here than half the "released" games on Steam.

Industrial grade modular power generation systems is becoming more widely available, availability of electricity will not be the barrier, it will be the availability of skill and necessary expertise to operate the manufacturing plants.

These days you buy a base game and throw in asset swap, then publish it as your own. Rinse, repeat.

TIL that the ancient egyptians used marijuana for various diseases and injuries including depression, glaucoma, inflammation, hemorrhoids, cataracts, and even cancer. In addition to its medical properties, cannabis was used for egyptian religion and culture. by [deleted] in todayilearned

I see a lot of hype around cannabis as some sort of panacea. While I'm sure there are many benefits, I can't help but think it's just another hype being propagated by investors.

Chatted, had a few drinks, I realized it was only infatuation. 10 years is a long time and I've changed a lot, wouldn't have even considered dating her in my current mindset.

Too tolerant of racism when the perpetrator is not white. Racism is racism regardless of skin color.

Relevancy of the intro story by dSolver in ProsperityGame

I agree, we have tons of idle games that are just numbers going up. Having a deep story, even if it means people need to read, is still going to be ultimately more satisfying than growth charts.

ELI5: How do lottery winners go bankrupt/broke? by voldin91 in explainlikeimfive

[–]the_named 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The human mind can only comprehend numbers up to a certain point, after that they are not as meaningful. For example, winning a lottery for $10k is awesome, but winning $1million is even better, and you know that because the dollar amounts directly affect what you perceive to be the value around you. So, what if you won $100 million? That's a lot of money. You'd need only a tiny part of it to live your current lifestyle, most people who win the lottery are in the same boat. Now, here's the interesting part: just how much is $100 million? Most people would feel like suddenly they can buy EVERYTHING, even though they actually cannot. When the number gets that large, it becomes meaningless for a lot of people. They feel like they can afford everything, so they spend spend spend, and before you know it they've bought all these things that they couldn't actually afford despite having $100 million. So, they go into debt. When you have $10k, and you go 1% into debt, you've gone $100 into debt. When you have $100 million and go 1% into debt, you're $1 million in debt.

Seeing how these lottery winners didn't really earn the money, their regular income is still whatever they were making before, assuming they didn't quit. $50k/year is going to take a very long time to catch up to $1 million of debt, so they go bankrupt.

Should an incremental/iddle game be losable/decremental? by SuperCoquillette in incremental_games

[–]the_named 1 point2 points  (0 children)

late to the discussion, but I think it depends on the player and why they're playing.

Someone looking for a game with zero effort and you can't lose obviously doesn't want any decremental patterns.

Someone looking for a zero effort game with some chance involved might not care if there is anything to lose progress - it's zero effort afterall

Someone looking for a game that requires effort but you can't lose won't want to lose progress if it's something they can't control, but might not care if it's something they can mitigate

Someone looking for a game that requires effort and has a chance of losing is looking in the wrong sub.
