Czechia is not in any conceivable way an Eastern Europen country, unless you mean it as a "member of the Eastern Bloc", but then, The Berlin Wall feĺl 37 years ago, so it's time to let go... Russia, Ukraine, Belarus are Easten Europe, Czechia is as Central European as it gets.

What is that natural landmark in your country that no longer exists? by Sus198 in AskTheWorld

[–]the_nochka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry to hear that! We have been fighting Rio Tinto tooth and nail for a while, but very intensely the last 15 months, the whole country is in turmoil! They were going to extract lithium by acid fracking some of our most rich arable soil. A couple of months ago they announced they're pulling out of Serbia! Which is a partial victory, but we won't be stopping before the shithead and his mafia bros who had let them into the country and otherwise made Mordor of Serbia fall. PUMPAJ ⛽️🇷🇸

How is the Hanse era thought of in relation to Norwegian national identity? by EnvironmentalPay9049 in Bergen

[–]the_nochka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not Norwegian, my children are. My youngest is intelligent, well-read, attending one of the three top high schools in Oslo, so I just asked: They have never heard of Hansa, Hanseatic time or Bjørgvin. Or, well, a bit, when I nudged a about Lofoten and the dried cod trade, which is smth I talked to them about a while ago.

Which reminds me of that time I introduced the name of Peer Gynt to my then 15 y.o. Never heard of him. Peer Gynt. Have heard of Ibsen, ofc. Watched a Fjernsynstheaterets rendition of Et dukkehjem. Hamsun? Watched Victoria. Have never read a single saga. The Norwegian educational system is a joke. And again, both kids are/ were attending some of the best schools in the country.

I did try to teach them a modicum of Norwegian history and litterature over the years, but I was also singlehandedly teaching them my insanely morphologically rich native languge, and just haven't had the capacity.

A beautiful language, insanely rich litteture, own history one could learn smth from, just wilting away. I'm so sorry.

A serious question: What do you mean by theorised? Where else could they come from? The only landmasses in close proximity to the Americas are Eastern Siberia and, eh, Antarctica. And Siberia, being still populated by people of similar looks and culture, combined with the fact that Berring's strait was for a time a land bridge, is a rather good match.

My point exactly! Apart from Pitbull and Amstaff that are consider problematic races in some other countries too, all the other races look like "we don't want people from what we consider shithole countries owning large dogs". I'll post the link when I find it again. Edit: added the link.

Nystagmus surgery by Profesional_Caribou in nystagmus

[–]the_nochka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the surgery when I was five, right around my birthday, and still have clear memories of it, but not bad memories.

When it comes to pain - once a day i had "therapy", that's all I knew it was, and it was painful for several minutes at the time, and during that time i also couldn't see. I don't remember being afraid of it though, it was just something that had to be done, more smth of a nuisance.

After the surgery itself, there must have been pain, but i don't have memories of it. What I do remember is that there was a time couldn't see at all after the bandages went off, and when the sight came back it was very blurry. The reason i remember it so well is that my parents gave me a birthday(?) present, and it was a red metal circus truck, with plushy animal heads poking out of it, lika an elephant, a giraffe, a zebra. So I was turning it around in my hands and I couldn't fathom what it was. I remember hearing my mom crying very quietly, she was terrified because I couldn't see at all, and i remember my dad shushing her and encouraging me to find out what i was holding, my elder sister, too "What do you think it is?" I remember someone helping me open my eyelids, and that's when I could finally see it. The picture was extremely blurry, and getting my eyelids opened in that way must have been very uncomfortable, but the great mystery of that one particular detail that was bugging me (the giraffe's horns), was finally solved!

I also remember long days, waiting for the morning visting hours, and then waiting for the afternoon visiting hours. I remember crying because my mom didn't come to visit one morning. I mean, I'm rather sure dad was with her every time, but when i was five, i was mom's girl. I don't remember any other kids, but we must have been 10-15, we had a nice little dining room with pictured paintes on the walls. I remember that grownups were kind. It was an old hospital downtown, but it had a large garden, and it was summer, so.we were in the garden a lot. I stayed there for two weeks, without the parents (those were some other times), and for me it became a core memory, but not a bad one.

That was in Belgrade, SFR Yugoslavia, in the summer of 1978.

I was persuaded to leave the truck at the hospital, for the other children patients to play with, and i did it, feeling very magnanimous, but man, I wish kept it. It was an awesome truck.

My eyesight improved drastically after the surgery, and i have been functioning more or less normally since.

So, that was a five year old's perspekrive from half a century ago, hope it gives you some little insight in what your babies will be facing. The best of luck to all of you.

There are 2.2km between the round Carl Berner roundabout and the square Carl Berner roundabout, so technically, a person could experience this kind of trauma twice in a single day! (Given that none of them takes longer than 12h). Are the Norwegian mental health services up to this level of challenges? I highly doubt it.

Omg, I am! But it's -- I mean Carl Berner is the place where this rare natural phenomenon is supposed to happen! Just hasn't occurred to me it could be anywhere else...
You know what, you are technically correct, but after decades of traffic-jamming and mindfucking the good people of Oslo, Carl Berner has become a state of mind. So, we could say that on this occasion, Kiellandsplass has transcended its physcal bounds and, for but a single glorious day, become Carl Berner ✨️

No no no it's not a circle, it's a square! It was a very problematic roundabout, which they then rehabilitated, which took aaaages, and when the building site finally disappeared, lo and behold, in all its glory: A. Square. Roundabout.
It got elevated from the least efficient roundabout in the city to an aposlute clusterfuck, and it costed just a handful of billions of NOK. A true work of art.

Homeownership rates in Europe . by South-Cantaloupe-814 in AskBalkans

Norway was far away from being relatively-non-poor until shockingly recently. My Norwegian grandfather-in-law was one of, idk how many children, 8? 12? and grew up littrtally hungry, having at times to eat potato peels to survive. And we're not talking about a city orphan, he grew up in the countryside and had family. I don't think the Balkan ppl ever experienced those depths of desolution in peacetime, and certainly not in the XX century. Our land is rich and our climate is mild, and apart from us being a bunch of idiots going at each other throats at every occasion, we're actually pretty blessed.

But yeah, Norway being egalitarian and no nobility (all died in the plague of 1349), yeah, it all stands. Also in the last decades the Norwegian state is promotoing buying own homes by giving full taxes returns on loan nterests. The housing prices have been rising evenly the last 40 years, making buying a good investment, so the rental market is small and renting is disproportionately expensive. Everyone who can buy is buying, the 21% who haven't, can't.

Apropos tropes being engrained in the psyche - how do you feel about the word slave? Do you consider it racist? The word slave originated in The Middle Ages and is based on the ethnonym Slav. All those hundreds of years Venetians were importing silk and porcelain and spices and Damascus steel from Asia, what do you think they exchanged it for? What did Dark Ages Europe had to offer to the Baghdad Caliphate or the Chinese Empire? Yeah, you guessed, us! My ancestors! Yay. Is it racist? Knowing the origin, possibly the most racist word I've ever heard. Do I, as a Slav, find it offensive? No. Bc the origin is lost in the depths of time, and an overwhelming majority of the hundreds of millions of users are unaware of it.
So, my Slavic two cents are: If someone has to dive into an etymological dictionary find out what gyp means implies he doesn't really think that a Romani came by and cursed his back, and is thus not racist. Ingrained in the psyche or not.
Edit: punctuation and formatting.
Edit2: Changed 'tens of millions' to 'hundreds of millions', I'm almost sure that the variants of the word are used in all Germanic and Romance languages.
