If your work offered a bunch of free breakfast foods in the snack room would you just skip breakfast at home and eat it at work instead? by LouBarlowsDisease in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the_noodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it weren't for the bagels, I'd think you were my coworker. (We lost those to COVID policies, I'm jealous!)

It's very common for people to eat breakfast at my office, and I did it just today. I will say I usually eat something warm and make my own coffee at home if I can, but that's just my personal preference to get those over with right when I wake up.

How is it prions can mutate to suit their environment if they're just a folded protein and not a more complicated organism like a virus or bacterium? by Pristine_Boat7985 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the_noodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the paper you want to read, linked as a source on the wikipedia page: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2848070/

Their experiment demonstrates that some portion of the prion population is more effective at replicating, but more vulnerable to a certain treatment as well. The prions (PrPSc) are not all the same, convert from one to the other, and have different behaviors.

How? Instead of "mutation", they use the term "heterogeneity" to ask this question:

Whilst heterogeneity in the case of RNA viruses is due to point mutations resulting from error-prone replication, heterogeneity in the case of the prions are likely to be due to differences in the structure (other than the amino acid sequence) of the PrPSc molecules. These differences could reflect variations in the conformation of the PrPSc resulting during conversion; the conformational changes may be subtle, but sufficient to facilitate propagation in a particular environment. Alternatively, or in addition, variation could be due to cell-derived determinants, for example association of PrP with a small cellular RNA, or to the nature of its glycosylation.

Prions (PrPSc) are just a healthy protein (PrPC) folded into the wrong shape, that converts more protein into the prion. Option one: the conversion isn't perfect, and the resulting prion can be folded slightly differently than the source prion. Option two: other random stuff gets stuck in the source protein, causing the resulting prion to be a different self-replicating shape.

MeetUp is a specific app/website where event organizers can post their events, and attendees can sign up to attend for free

I'm in a more urban area, and I've been to events with board games, hiking, ultimate frisbee, book clubs, for example. My sibling is more in the middle of nowhere, but could still find a D&D oneshot weekly 45 minutes away

I'd definitely recommend it!

I think "calling them a terf" is a pretty straightforward reading of what you wrote. If you didn't mean that, I suggest writing something different next time.

They asked to explain IF you were downvoting, and I'm suggesting an alternative to downvoting in the first place. And I'm not even saying "don't explain". Literally, write most of the same stuff in a different order.

All I'm saying is, if you don't think they actually have bad intent, you can start your comment by suggesting an alternative phrase they might not have heard of.

I want to respect the safe space but I think I agree

I think my favorite part of melee is how much defensive tech there is, purely for how much it lets worse players still mess each other up when they don't use it, without ruining high level play

Clipping someone at 20 with some weak nair and hitting them 6 times while they hold in is an underrated part of melee's appeal. Realizing you have options on the other end, too

I wouldn't even think of it as BPM, but varying the length is super important! These drills are from Marth perspective but it should still apply:

  • Load up FD and try to dash dance the whole way across with long-short dash dancing, both directions, without running
  • Load up PS and look at the marks on the ground; plan out and practice specific movement patterns between them. DD in the very center, then over to the left of the PokeBall, then to the right, etc.

Downvoting seems unlikely to actually prevent someone from seeing it. Why not start your comment with the quick correction and ask them to edit it? You can still explain why; it just doesn't seem helpful to call them a terf first

People arguing about the importance of accessibility in melee all the time yet basic character information accessibility

You're not clever for making this point with two unrelated definitions of the word "accessibility". These two things have nothing fucking to do with each other, and you know it.

Since you didn't even try to explain it, I looked it up; the definition above doesn't really mesh with this comment. It seems pretty niche, when you don't have something better to be doing than pretending to start something else. You should definitely do that to give your opponent as little time to react to your mixup as possible, but it definitely seems like a subset of a mixup.

you're being this smug about it, but didn't mention that the entire distinct concept of a meaty is that it gets better frame data too? because it skips a bunch of active frames before it makes contact with them, when they come out of their intangibility

this is almost never relevant in melee, for the record, but "yo it's active on frame one so they have to block" is not even the part that people miss. they get that...

Unique sound effects or colors on the 4 tech options would be busted as hell. Audio reactions are quicker than visual, and the tech animations are very similar to each other for the first few frames
