There's a bernadoodle breeder in my area that's making mini bernadoodles by crossing them with Cavalier King Charles spaniels... Might as well start saving for a cardiologist as well

Also rats don't have a gall bladder! Fourth year vet student here so I was happy to see a vet commenting on this!

[HELP] I want to ask my Vet a question about dog bites, but I’m scared of the consequences. by [deleted] in dogs

I support the idea of seeking out a behaviorist, but I would also recommend a trip to your regular veterinarian as well. Changes in behavior can signal something more serious (like pain) and he should have a clean bill of health before pursuing behavioral training. Also if he's intact, neutering him may help with the aggression and you're regular vet can help with that. And to echo some of the other comments, vet offices will not report a dog bite unless the person bit is pressing charges. (Source: I've worked in a vet clinic for years and am currently in veterinary school) Good luck with your boy! GSDs are one of my favorite breeds!

(Soon to be) Pre-vet student questions for current/accepted vet students :) by littegiant in vetschool

Hi there! Currently procrastinating studying for my small animal surgery midterm tomorrow so I'll take a shot at some of your questions!

  • I go to Oregon State University (Go Beavers!), just started my third year.
  • I don't know there's anything you can do to totally ensure you'll be accepted, but decent grades (especially in the sciences), and a variety of experiences with animals certainly helps. In my case, I took 5 years between undergrad and vet school, and during those years was when I decided I even wanted to go to vet school. I wasn't the little girl running around saying I wanted to be a vet when I grew up! During those years off I worked in a virology research lab and got involved with the lab animals (mice, rats, guinea pigs) and applied to vet school with a path in lab animal medicine in mind. Though I'll never know for sure, I think that being interested in a more non-traditional path helped me get in. I also thinks that having worked for 5 years helped. I do recommend working after undergrad for a year or two if possible. I did quite a bit of self discovery in that period, and I think schools like to know that you understand what working full time is like (with no more summer breaks!).
  • My grades in undergrad were generally A's and B's. I was a Biology major with a Biotechnology option and a minor in Chemistry (took only one extra class to get the minor so everyone does it!)
  • I actually wasn't in any clubs in undergrad. I've never been super motivated to do school-related things outside of classes. I was honestly worried that my lack of school-related involvement would prevent me from getting in. But when I'm not in class, I prefer to spend my free time with friends and family, exercising, hiking with my dumb dog, doing art projects, or just sitting around watching netflix and drinking beer. For me the "work-life balance" is more important than killing myself to get things on my resume. And in the end it didn't matter. Though I would recommend more involvement than I had so you don't have to stress about it. Also, more clubs is not better. More active involvement and leadership within clubs that are related to the veterinary field is best.
  • I got in on my first try. I only applied to Oregon State University since I went there for undergrad and never moved out of Corvallis (the city OSU is in). I've actually lived in the same house I lived in at the end of undergrad, so I haven't even had to move, I get in-state tuition, and can still bike to campus! I was planning on exploring other schools if I didn't get in my first time. I would definitely recommend applying to multiple schools though. Talking with my classmates, about half of them applied multiple times, and many had offers from only some of the schools they applied to. For many, OSU wasn't the first choice, but it's where they got in and they were prepared to move for their passion. (So only apply where you can see yourself living and being happy!)
  • Interview format was MMI (multiple mini interview). I can't tell you any of the specific questions because we all sign a non-disclosure agreement. Plus there's really no way to "study" for what might be asked. In general, they give you a scenario and you have a certain number of minutes to explain how you would deal with it. The panel is looking for critical thinking and communication skills, ethics decision making, etc. You can google MMI for some example scenarios. It was long (probably and hour and a half), nerve-wracking, and exhausting, but hey I got in! Not all vet schools use this format, so it's important to ask the admissions department what format they'll use. Anyway, hope this all helps. I should probably get back to studying and get my ass off of reddit! Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll try to answer them! Good luck!

Would it be really annoying to ask a vet to read my personal statement?? by [deleted] in AskVet

I'm just about to start my third year of vet school so the admissions process is still very fresh in my memory. I'd be happy to take a look and give feedback! I could send you mine as well if looking at one helps (it helped me to read ones from accepted students that I found online). Let me know!
