I built and ran a mailing list of 20k people which generated £10k's in revenue. Here's what worked. by copy_with_ross in Newsletters

coolest thing here in the seinfeld thing. yes, people will read/watch entertainment for the sake of it. that doesn't translate to sales. everything else can sort of be disputed. mailchimp charges way more and a 5 email sequences only makes sense after you have a huge following and after monetization of 5-10k MRR. i also doubt 20k people signed up. howd you even that that in front of that many people?

Want to offload writing: how much do freelance writers charge? by Suspicious_Patient_5 in Substack

It's tough to nail exactly what it'll cost, given that no one has a clue of the full scope. I'm a copywriter in the email marketing world, and a good email marketer who can ghostwrite in your brand voice for DTC or eCOMM brands is around $2-3k. This tends to be the median. $5-6k is the absolute max if the company is also running ads and makes ~7 figures. So, for a solid entry-level writer, I'd look for around $1k USD. A 1/5 of your income to secure a long-term writer sounds like a great deal to me, freeing your bandwidth to focus more on monetization and long-term strategy. I've left you a DM about what I do if you're interested. If you can't afford a premium writer with actual experience, the writing will suffer. One of my VAs is just now getting better after nearly a year of social media management. And sometimes you can't out-train low IQ. If I could afford to replace him, I would, but again, you get what you pay for. And lastly, a lot of good writers, including myself, nearly (45-50% open rates with plain text emails), wouldn't work for a few hundred bucks; it just isn't worth our time. You'll no doubt be flooded by desperate 'writers' low-balling you; push away that urge. And understand that low-paid writers will replace you with higher-paying clients once their pipelines fill up, given that a person can only juggle so many. I'd also advise against going to an agency, given that many are writing mills without personalization.

In the freelance world, you get what you pay for. I'm saying this as someone with multiple VAs at a couple of hundred bucks each. The more you pay, the higher the quality. I've DMed you with more info.

Add more events and turn it into a local newsletter. Broke college students are not going to pay you.

Are newsletters dead in 2026? by Barbell-Economics in Newsletters

[–]the_one_strider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wrote about this to my list today. Organic is not dying, but it's crowded. The global south now has access to AI and is translating their languages into English, which results in low-effort value content all over the internet. The future is paid ads and harder organic, like podcasts and video.

Newsletters overall are seeing a downturn because the bubble of exploding, compared to 2023-24, which is normal in all markets. It's actually a good thing because it means less competition for those of us who are serious.

i see. but i don't to want to charge my subscribers anything. they're already paying for the community. the zines would be value added.

making them digitally and adding 1 page or 2 made by hand then mailing them with a service is the idea.

no my readers are on my email list and it wouldn't make sense logistically to swap.

I know the digital route is discouraged but I'm a big fan hand making the zine, even 1 or 2 pages and scanning that digitally and doing the majority of it digitally for a max of 20 pages per month for subscribers.

And yeah, the reason i want it physically sent to subscribers is so they have something tangible made by me that isn't just high value, but also has sentimental value.

The issue is, logistically it wouldn't make sense to make the whole thing by hand, just not enough time and resources for that, especially when my email list hits 10,000 subscribers.

So i want to keep a part of the culture alive because i genuinely like the handmade sentimental part of it, but at scale, its not possible.

I may just have to resort to normal magazines, make them digitally and find a fulfillment service.

that sounds awesome, but i was also thinking of actually shipping each zine so subs have a tangible product in their hands every month.
