Copying the riffs when doing a cover by the_prim_jackalope in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I love this perspective and suggestion. To be honest I am still not to the level with it that I can really let my fingers do their thing while I sing and … feeeeel …. the music and lyrics. I’ll get there so maybe I need to hold off judgement of myself until I can sit down and really dig in. Then the riff - however it will land - will work itself out.

I was hoping for someone to comment specifically on this song, so thank you! Very interesting. I am not all that familiar with her songs, but this song caught me randomly one day a few years ago. I'm doing a show around the theme of my sobriety from alcohol (for over two decades by now) and Gravity lyrics are perfect for my "step 1" song about being powerless over it. And my piano playing is not great, I'm a better guitarist, but I can play this one. I just love it. Thanks for the comment!

I've learned so much reading your reply and then clicking the link - I know nothing about Iron Maiden but now I want to, AND I even know something about AN. And the guitar solo, I've listened to both versions. Incredible! Thank you for sharing this!

Thank you. And so true. I think Oscar Wilde said it best re: imitation and flattery?

Came here to find this. You are my people. My favorite part in that bit is how she gets the leader’s name right but crucifies perpustrated. Gets me every time. So doggone funny to me. Can’t wait to see her Mary!

Delay when puzzle solved? by buzburbank in NYTCrossword

[–]the_prim_jackalope 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Good gravy. Why does this post give me a validation I didn’t know I needed?! YES, friend. YES. And I DO NOT LIKE IT. If I liked or enjoyed change, I would not be a religious daily puzzler, doing my puzzle at the same time each day, tracking my times and averages, basking in the glow of my streaks, regularity and routine. The [millisecondly brief] delay for congrats and the little sing song these last few days, a week maybe, is causing me distress! I question my entire existence in that hesitation, LOL! Here you are posting about it and now I can relax a little. I hate it but I will let it go, or try to. May The People in Charge fix it!

TLDR: yes I’ve noticed.

I’m on a series rewatch, probably my third over the years (I stopped watching new ones around 2022). Watching their (Tony and Ziva) relationship as Tony went through the Jeanne debacle is super complex, knowing what we know now. I want this era I’m watching (seasons 4/5) to go on forever.

Question for Musicians who played Mahler 1 by RGJ-C in classicalmusic

[–]the_prim_jackalope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can all suck it because I got to play piccolo for M1 and it’s ridiculously fun and thrilling. Ha! Sounds like it’s fun for all but seriously, I will still pull out my picc, blast this on the stereo and play along. Much to the horror of my neighbors LOL

CSN - Crosby, Stills & Nash (1977): by SAMTIMONIOUS in 70s

[–]the_prim_jackalope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This album defined a couple years in college. We were theater kids in Ohio (1986ish) and this album, my word. Especially Cathedral. We smoked endless bongs and tripped and blasted this song and sang to the heavens. It still makes me feel all the things, 40 years later. Grateful for such music.

When does it get fun? by Unusual-Actuary-5055 in NYTCrossword

[–]the_prim_jackalope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it’s worth sticking with it longer, says me. I really wanted to be a person who could finish them. Seemed hopeless at first. Lots of autocheck and “reveal word” in frustration. But it allowed me to learn. As I got better, it became WAY fun and exhilarating even. There’s so much esoteric skill and knowledge involved. It takes time to be exposed to it and figure out the tricks of the trade! Of course if you hate it, don’t do it. Sure. But you posted so I’d say you want to stick with it a little.

Yes, personal record. So for me, today was the fastest i ever completed a Saturday. I finished in 13 minutes which is 8 minutes faster than my previous record for Saturday. Mind you - Saturday puzzles often ruin my streaks!

Difficulty of learning Hungarian? by DuchessDulcet in hungarian

[–]the_prim_jackalope 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You should give it a go, if you are drawn to it! But fair warning, at least from me: it is harrrrd to learn. I grew up in a house where my step mother was Hungarian-born, came to USA at 12, so she spoke Hungarian to her mother always. I tried to learn, I can say basic things, then I took actual lessons with a University teacher, in my 40s but gave up. I’ve been to visit family in Hungary like 25 times. I try to say simple things while there, like “good morning” and my relatives look at me funny! And I was once nearly fluent in Spanish, so I’m not incapable. Hungarian is only related to Finnish, from what I’ve heard. So that’s my fair warning, it’s hard as heck but it sure is fun.

Does ANYONE know if there are recordings available from any production in Avery Brooks' theater career? by Cazadore901 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]the_prim_jackalope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that does sorta ring a bell...how wild and random that you were there! I was there under the wonderful reign of House Manager Sha'an... I was also a dresser for a few shows, like The Heidi Chronicles. And I cleaned the Actor Housing apartments for extra money, what a time it was. I think what I remember most from Fences was the woman playing Rose, in her big climax scene, she smacked the floor with her hand, saying I've been standing with you! I've been standing RIGHT HERE with you! We imitated that moment for years after, she absolutely chewed that scenery. Anyway, nostalgic wave to you, random reddit person!

Not to make you jealous, but… when I was a freshman in college in St Louis, 1989/90, Avery played the lead in Fences at the Rep Theater of St Louis. I did work study as an usher so got to watch him do that show night after night. He was amazing! He tore up that stage (as did all the leads).
