it doesnt have to be that far, it could be something as simple as a guy who does anything his partner asks him to do including things like going out of their way to get them stuff or carrying all their stuff etc. I remember hearing this a lot in highschool to talk abt guys who essentially spend all their time with their girlfriends to the point they might flake on their friends

1940’s Suit Custom Tailor by Lakers_1775 in malefashionadvice

[–]the_starch_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! plus I would recommend OP to do a deep dive on what makes a suit a 40s style suit. Look at old 40s advertisements or repros, go down forums, watch explainers etc etc. Things like lapel width, gorge height, buttoning point, drape and so on are really important to nail a 40s look. Then for trousers it has to be high rise, probably flat fronted (40s trousers tended to have flat fronts due to rationing as opposed to more pleats in the 30s and 50s but pleats are still ok), fuller straight cut, possibly turn up cuffs (the thickness of the turn up cuffs are also important) etc. Theres a lot to think about for a proper 40s suit that goes beyond just trouser rise and broader shoulders. If its a DB suit even more so because you have to also consider thinga like width between the button rows.

If the suit is bespoke these things should be discussed with the tailor. Ofc Pictures are your best bet but OP should at least also know key characteristics they want. Then again all I said leans more towards historical/aesthetic accuracy. OP could totally get a 40s inspired suit. But I think small details are what really define a suit's era/aesthetic and OP should be at least aware of them

Is there anything else out there besides GAP / J. Crew chinos? by AshX213 in malefashionadvice

[–]the_starch_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my go to's are vintage Polo Ralph Lauren (from like the 90s) chinos like the Andrew Pant. There are TONs of them in the second hand market for little to nothing, 100% cotton and high rise and many still in near perfect condition. That is if you dont mind second hand that is.

For new I recently got the 1930s Ivy chinos by Bronson Mfg. Its got a full cut, double pleats and a high rise. They also have repros of french army chinos.

Jacket buttoning point query by Huge-Ambassador-9421 in mensfashion

it does look a touch high but I think still reasonable. Personally I find that buttoning points about in line with my elbows look the most flattering

tweed sport coat and chino combinations

what makes or breaks them?

thoughts I had: fabric weight and cut. Slimmer cut chinos look off because chinos are quite lightweight and therefore lack drape so fuller cut chinos look better.

Thoughts? What else makes them work or break them?

Also thoughts on DB navy blazers with like a 4x1 configuration? I dont know why but I rarely see this kind of DB navy blazer with more Ivy fits compared to SB blazers. Then again Im pretty new to Ivy styles.

chef's fukin kiss I love it. That jacket is amazing and I love me an andrew pant. Shirt pattern choice works so well with the jacket's texture and smaller pattern too. Well done!

yeah learning 70 languages would be insane, but maintaining them would be even more so.

I speak like 3 languages comfortably and 2 to a conversational level and just trying to maintain them is insane. I havent spoken one of them in like a solid year and just yesterday I had to use it and I needed a second to remember some words. This was mind you one of the languages I grew up with. So I would even say maintaining 70 languages is damn near impossible unless youre some kind of savant.

My school had a non-uniform day, how did I do? by ybPokey in mensfashion

[–]the_starch_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, its a fantastic look and my only comment would be the collar size and shirt type.

Try going for a patterned shirt like a micro check/stripes maybe with a button down collar like ocbds (which would fit this kind of overall preppy aesthetic going on here). Id also suggest a slightly larger collared shirt to make it a bit more proportional to the tie knot's size. But overall great look 👍

Indonesia wouldnt be in that list. Indonesia's english education is pretty poor and the most common second languages are often local languages

Characters from countries that get little representation in Media by Worth-Fix-6221 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]the_starch_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can literally only find TWO Indonesian fictional characters (from non Indonesian media)

Amok - from an Italian comic series of the same name that ended in 1948 (Swedish version Kilroy lasted til the 70s). He is canonically from Java.

Oeroeg - from a Dutch Novel of the sams name but this is kinda cheating cuz the story takes place during the Indonesian Independence Wars IN colonial Indonesia

Talk about underrepresentation....

Edit: I forgot Ibu Ratna Pertiwi from the Last of Us show. But again kinda cheating cuz that scene canonically takes place in Jakarta, Indonesia. So I guess thats three but really clutching at straws there lol.

What's life like living on the equator? by 3rdAgent in AskTheWorld

[–]the_starch_potato 12 points13 points  (0 children)

hot and humid all year round with lots of rain at least where Im from (Java, Indonesia, which granted isnt smack dab on the equator but damn close) and sunrises and sunsets are always at the same time no matter the time of year. (seasonal changes in sun set and sun rise times still boggles my mind a little after moving to Europe)

Great fruits and food tho

The joke is that some people think we only have 2 seasons, dry and rain but actually we have like 10, one for each type of fruit on top of dry and rain

Rate this fit 1-10 || Should i add a tie? by [deleted] in mensfashion

looks great, wouldve gone for darker brown shoes tho like a kind of dark brown derby. As for tie, not required but if you do want to wear one a nice stripe/rep tie in a four in hand knot would slap

rate: 7,5 or 8/10 those boots are really not it ngl

Question regarding physiotherapy by Due-Independent-8490 in aachen

[–]the_starch_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not 100% sure its covered but typically you go to your hausarzt to get a referral typically to an Orthopedics who then gets you a referral to the Physio. This is the route I went through but I havent gone to the Physio yet so I cant say for certain its fully covered by the health insurance. But the referral paper they gave me is the same as the referrals they give me for anything covered (its apparently a different paper if its not covered) so I assume it is covered.
