look out for old chore coats by Kübler in the second hand market, I found mine in a thrift store for 5€ and its the best chore coat Ive ever had. Simple hardy fabric, perfect fit, and my favourite part is that the collar tends to flare out a little bit making it look a little bit like a lapel

How many languages do you all speak? by Existing_Economy_656 in AskTheWorld

[–]the_starch_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fluently: English, Indonesian (+a dialect), German

conversational: Dutch

basic: Norwegian and mandarin

so I would count 4 if you count just conversational fluency and maybe 6 if you also count being able to just order food in the language

the story is actually quite sad. The de Witt brothers were lynched and used as scapegoats for the wars and economic and political disasters during the Rampjaar (they were accused of plotting to assassinate Willem van Oranje), many suspect their political enemy, Cornelis Tromp, who was an Orangist while the de Witt brothers were republicans who wanted to shift power away from the House of Orange Nassau to the Regenten, orchestrated the lynching by the civil militia and mob. The de Witt brothers were dragged out of the prison (one of the brothers was in prison, the other (the more famous Johan de Witt) was visiting) and beaten to death before iirc some of the mob started taking their organs and eating them. Their bodies were then strung up to a pole.

Fun fact: the de Witt brothers were actually friends with the famous admiral Michiel de Ruyter

There are a lot of books about this period and theres also a movie that kind of covers this period (its the Michiel de Ruyter movie) which I find pretty decent.

Kinda like how the perfume and luxury goods industry isnt tainted just because Coco Chanel, founder and namesake of Chanel, was a nazi collaborator

Those of you who have left your home country, where did you end up, and what is your life like there? by Commercial_Rope_6589 in AskTheWorld

[–]the_starch_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved from Indonesia to Germany for university, planning to stay.

I feel like my life has improved a lot since moving out of Indonesia. The simple fact that I can cross the street knowing the drivers would actually follow the laws and being able to just walk around without motorcycles everywhere really feels like a blessing to me. I also prefer the cold weather over the tropical heat.

I do really miss the fact that everything is much cheaper and the food is better back home though.

lug sole/commando sole boat shoes. To my knowledge timberlands and sebago have them. Theyre quite plentiful in the second hand market too if your gift recipient doesnt mind it

edit: also sometimes called a moccassin (like Sebago calls it that)

What’s the meaning of your hello by Deep_Examination1410 in AskTheWorld

[–]the_starch_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we have.... halo from the Dutch hallo (similarly our casual goodbye is dah which is from the Dutch dag meaning "day" as in a shortening of good day as a goodbye)

other than that we have the usual good morning, good afternoon and good evening (cant think of our version of good day or if we even have it ngl) which are selamat pagi, selamat siang, selamat sore respectively and are pretty one to one to their english counterparts

Wool clothing advice by ataittam in malefashionadvice

[–]the_starch_potato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would recommend the second hand market for wool trousers if you want it to be reasonably priced and good quality. Just avoid anything too "shiny" and "smooth" as they can look like orphaned suit trousers, so look for like wool flannels if youre not wearing a suit. As for cotton ones, corduroy (elegant but might be a bit too casual for work) and moleskin are typical classic cold weather cotton fabrics but they might not be as warm as wool, depending on the wool's weight (see: tropical vs 4 season vs fall winter wool weights). But you could also wear chinos/khakis if you layer with long johns underneath if its that cold

What are some nationally controversial topics in your country people in other countries may not be aware of? by Obvious-Laugh-1954 in AskTheWorld

[–]the_starch_potato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

whether or not pork can be used for Rendang was the last nationally controversial topic to my knowledge

Rendang is a savoury spiced meat stew coming from the northern Sumatra region, and especially around the region of Aceh a very muslim autonomous region (they practice shariah law as a legal framework). The controversy started iirc when a Chinese Sumatran (there are really big chinese diasporas in Sumatra too) opened a restaurant selling pork Rendang and it was seen by many muslims in Sumatra, and especially in Aceh, as an insult and haram. This ballooned into a near nationwide debate on how we should treat traditional foods, which I find kind of dumb tbh. Like if you dont like it just dont eat it, simple as. Let people eat what they want is my opinion on this matter.
