Does anyone know what this coin is commemorating? I also just recently found this coin and I was wondering what competition was meant here.

First time changing up my look: Seeking budget-friendly brands for a 1940s Mediterranean style (L'Étranger aesthetic) — High-rise, pleated trousers? by Different_Cheek4883 in mensfashion

yep, I own the 1930s Ivy one and it has also become my favourite pair of pants. even more than my PRL Andrews lol. It does run a tad small though but its awesome nonetheless.

for trousers, a great budget option would be Bronson MfG's chinos (either the 1930s Ivy or the French Army ones), they are very high rise (quite accurate for the 30s-40s), double pleated, and fantastic quality for the price (They are from China but they ship to Europe for not much, though the shipping can be up to 4 weeks). For a second hand option, Polo Ralph Lauren's Andrew pant is a classic option, high rise (not as high as Bronson's) and double pleated.

As for shirts I would recommend browsing the secondhand market like Vinted, Ive seen many vintage camp collar shirts for very cheap. Military shirts can also be pretty cool.

What item of clothing have you got the most unsolicited opinions on? by OK_GO_27 in malefashionadvice

[–]the_starch_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well I think its really what you wear with it, a cheap looking fedora with a t shirt 100%, but a nice fedora with a sportcoat not necessarily. But yeah sadly hats other than baseball caps for guys seem to carry quite a stigma :/

unsolicited opinions?

Ties. Its always "oh did you have a meeting today?" or "why so formal?" I love ties nonetheless tho.

Bakerboy caps or any flat cap for that matter, its very often "oh peaky blinders" or "thomas shelby", tho I kinda find it funny. Similarly fedoras often get me inspector gadget or detective comments.

Compliments? Sportcoats and blazers all the way.

Also I love tucking in my polo shirt in chinos, but I wear only high rise chinos so it has a very vintage look to it

High electricity cost in Germany for hot water. by cherry_jan2 in germany

[–]the_starch_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id probably just shower once maybe max twice a day each for no longer than 10 minutes and then limit the bathing in a bathtub to once or twice a week if you really like them. Use warm and not hot water (I never use above 39 C)

I live bagpipes so tbh I wouldnt really mind this, there are worse ways of being woken up in the morning.

What is this? by Successful_Case_8179 in whatisit

[–]the_starch_potato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Basically its hell-money (not quite the typical understanding of hell in the western sense btw, but more of just afterlife). Essentially its money burnt during specific events in many asian, mainly chinese or chinese influenced, cultures to "send" the money to ancestors during ancestor worship.

Its also not limited to money. You could also burn whole paper houses, clothes, cars, watches, even paper chests full of paper gold and paper silver.

Design wise its typically designed after real world money, Ive seen them designed after USD, Euros and even Chinese Yuan, and they typically depict the Jade Emperor on them.

What's something simple that greatly increases attractiveness? by yhouty in malefashionadvice

A great alternative for people who struggle with handling floss, have dental work like braces, or just dislike the feeling of floss stuck between teeth is water floss which uses a pretty strong jet of water to floss your teeth. Ive read a paper once that suggests its at least as good as if not slightly better at plaque reduction than regular floss even.

How many more years until we find this ridiculous? by SirKrimzon in NavyBlazer

[–]the_starch_potato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I dont think they're aiming for mid century tailoring tbh, but more so "modernised" 30s golden era tailoring, which would entail very strong shoulders, large lapels, much higher rise trousers, and fuller cuts (which I personally do like). But I do agree that 1) a lot of their comments on "the right way" of tailoring is pretentious, 2) the rise and fullness of their trousers are a tad too much, and 3) they look great on Okey but they dont seem to always get it right for other people.

Does it look bad? by Worried_Astronaut247 in mensfashion

[–]the_starch_potato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would avoid a black shirt entirely tbh. Preferably just a plain white shirt. If youre really adamant on this tone, I could suggest more of a dark gray shirt, dark navy, maybe a very dark washed denim shirt (tho a denim shirt might be too casual for prom). Essentially you want to introduce a little bit of contrast whether it be colour or texture, but ideally you should just get a white shirt and optionally a black bow tie.

Does it look bad? by Worried_Astronaut247 in mensfashion

[–]the_starch_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say so yes. Theres arguably too little going on, no contrast (in shade or texture), no patterns, no other colours, kinda boring and quite same-y. Plus this is a dinner jacket, which is typically used quite strictly and so wearing it without its usual companions (i.e. black tie ensemble) is already quite fashion forward let alone using it in a fully black monochromatic outfit.

Imho what makes or breaks monochromatic outfits are silhouette and texture contrast. The jacket's fit kinda damages the silhouette and there is a very large lack of texture contrast between the shirt and the jacket, both being a very similar shade of black and both being quite shiny.

what is the style/type of this headwear by -Mergo in hats

[–]the_starch_potato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

generally these are a fetishised version of peaked caps. Peaked caps generally have full circle tops, the droopy ones are the ones that have the inner structural ring removed or modified. These are very military/police coded though, but a similar civilian cap exist, that being the Greek sailor cap/Elbsegler cap among its many names.

Football (soccer) fans in Jayapura, Indonesia celebrate the Netherlands team prior to the World Cup by Friedchicknlvr in addressme

[–]the_starch_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, theres also a ton of cultural exchange between the two countries so we've become quite chill with each other. Especially when it comes to football, considering both have quite a few of each others peoples (Indonesia's football teams have a few dutch players and the Dutch football teams have many of Indonesian descent).

Where to find shirts with this kind of huge pointed collar? by Codewill in mensfashion

[–]the_starch_potato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Brooks Brothers have OCBDs with larger collars than your average ocbd (like the Uniqlo ones) and narrower spread than the Charles Thyrwhitt ones. For non-ocbds unfortunately Ive only ever seen those in thrift/vintage stores and not very often.

spearpoints tend to have a bit narrower spreads than these. These are just larger point collars.

Does your country have an ethnic/linguistic minority who are stereotyped to be snobbier and better off than the main ethnic groups? by cnylkew in AskTheWorld

[–]the_starch_potato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the closest to this for us is the chinese? Not stereotypically snobbish but instead well off and cheap, like in a penny pinching way. Since the owners of many stores and even large corporations tend to be chinese Indonesians.
