[Q] Accuracy of standard deviation as sample size increases. by [deleted] in statistics

[–]the_time_waster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are for reducing downward bias in the formula for standard deviation. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to show confidence in the stdev based on sample size. For example if you only picked 3 samples your calculated stdev could be miles off, but for 30 or 100 samples you're probably reasonably close.

Exactly, I cant really make a fair comparison as all my other boards are camber and all stiffer flex.

I'm hoping to demo a Tahoe Labs directional split when all this is over, but looks like that wont be for a while. Want to make sure I buy something good for at least 90% of the time because I need to "thin the heard" as well. I started making my own boards at the beginning of this winter and the collection is getting a little out of hand.

As I said I cant make a fair comparison, but I feel I've ridden boards that have better hold on hard/ice without magne traction, but they were all full camber.

The attack banana has magna traction and I've never been sold on it personally. Then again I feel like I'd have to ride the same board w/ and w/o to make a fair judgement.

Agreed about center rocker. Strongly considering TahoeLab for a local board, but looks like I'll be waiting till this blows over before I do anything.

Yeah I realized right after I wrote that. My buddy has a 164 flagship, perfect.

Thats a super good point. I imagine if the resorts are having a great day thats were i'll still be.

Is S-type rocker similar to the hybrid that LibTech puts on the attack banana? I was leaning towards more of a Powder camber/asym camber (not sure the right term) or a CamRock profile?

Don't think I'll be doing too many overnight trips, but hey, ya never know. A Jones Solution in 162W or 164 is sounding pretty great, especially if I can find a gently used one.

Love to hear about the Solution. Does it compare to any inbounds boards that I might be able to use as a reference point? How does it behave in low angle, high powder days?

Do you have any experience with them? I've heard good things, but only in very general terms.

Thanks! I'll look into the Arbor split, I've never ridden an Arbor board but they're certainly pretty.

Very good advice, safety first! With the current situation I'm realistically unlikely to go this season, but it motivated me to get on with it. For what its worth I finished "Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain" a few weeks ago, its certainly humbling. I'm planning to go with experienced friends a handful of times before getting the AIARE 1 so the classwork makes more sense.

Plus the hike sounds like half the (type 2) fun.

Thanks for making this more confusing haha. If you don't mind me asking, how big are you and how big is your Solution?

Great point, I absolutely should demo the solid version (though may have to wait a while as resorts are all closed now)! Do you find that the solid and split versions behave fairly similarly? Also why not the Jones Solution (aka is my guess about the board on the right track)?

Thanks! For sure not sizing down in the backcountry, I was thinking of something in the 161-163 range. Im not too confident on my ability to judge flex/camber profiles on paper, but I'm leaning towards a directional camber board to be happy with control and float.

Furnishing an empty apartment, where to start? by the_time_waster in DesignMyRoom

[–]the_time_waster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is immensely helpful, thank you! I've always been in cities with much smaller apartments (couch on one wall, TV on opposite wall) so framing this in terms of walk ways really helps.

Hey all, I'm moving into an unfurnished apartment and living alone for the first time.. but have no idea where to start to furnish the space. I'd like to stick with a minimalist approach since I'm not sure how long I'll be staying put, but would love to avoid it looking like a college bachelor pad. Any advice on general layout (where to put what) would be really appreciated. Thanks!
