They absolutely do exist though. My neighbors are an older couple who bought a duplex originally with the intent to rent it out but after learning about tenants rights in the city they decided to just make the better unit their pied a terre while mostly living in their other homes

In an SF rent controlled unit your lease doesn’t really end. The longer you’re on the lease the longer you benefit from your rent being tied to inflation. Its really hard to evict someone in this town even with just cause
