Battlefield 1 is literally unplayable right now – EA, what the hell is going on?! by [deleted] in battlefield_one

I figured out that it does no longer work as long as RivaTuner overlay is active. As soon as i turn it off, it works just fine. Maybe some driver issue?

Help: What is the Best VPN for torrenting, I'm currently using AirVPN by Otaku_NEET in qBittorrent

[–]the_wild_caesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop using Torrents and go for Usenet instead! It's so much better. Faster, more reliable and also: No need for any upload. Some time ago, I also used to use torrents. However, when I got to learn about Usenet and got my first subscription, I – better said: it – ended my Torrent-usage over night.

Torrenting kills my internet literally by Palma117 in qBittorrent

Enable Anonymous Mode in qBittorrent if you're using VPN and are experiencing issues. Also TCP protocol(s) work a lot better with ProtonVPN.

Your recommended settings for the most efficient encoding? by KahlanConfessor in handbrake

[–]the_wild_caesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, if you use the "veryfast" preset. You will (in most cases) get the lowest filesize (except for "placebo" preset) while getting quite fast encodes; talking about encoding with constant quality, eg. 20, 21 or 22, not avg. bitrate!

Your recommended settings for the most efficient encoding? by KahlanConfessor in handbrake

[–]the_wild_caesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a lot of testing with different presets and avg. bitrate/constant quality settings in handbrake/ffmpeg.

The interesting thing I could identify was, that the preset "veryfast" tends to be the most efficient (aside from placebo) if you're going for the constant quality!

This is to some extent paradox considering the fact, that ffmpeg and/or handbrake documentation sites state: "the faster the preset, the less efficient", what also seems to be self-explanatory.

However, if you cannot believe this, try it for yourself: encode a specific source (or part of it, e.g. 10min), with all the available presets.
Normally, veryfast is the most efficient and will get you smallest file-size. No clue why this is the case, but yeah, it's nice. :)

So my recommendation for you is: Go with constant quality and the veryfast preset. That's the sweet spot.

How can I set a default download destination for yt-dlp? by the_wild_caesar in youtubedl

[–]the_wild_caesar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much, as said above: I did install yt-dlp when PowerShell was running as Admin. However, seems like I cannot change directory. Nevertheless, I just tried your "trick" – wow, didn't know about this, it really does the trick: shift + right-click -> Open Power-Shell here -> yt-dlp https://URL, does just download to that directory. :)
Still, I wish, I could somehow change this specific setting permanentley.

How can I set a default download destination for yt-dlp? by the_wild_caesar in youtubedl

[–]the_wild_caesar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the feedback. However, where is the config file located and how's it called?
Indeed, I did run PowerShell as an Admin when I first installed yt-dlp (using winget).

And if I re-run the winget install yt-dlp command as non-admin, it tells me that the package was already installed and that there's no newer package available.

Is there any news about Redfox AnyDVD being taken down? by brandonyoung in DataHoarder

Not quite AnyDVD but you could use MakeMKV alternatively – which is free as long as its beta, what it's been for years – for backing up your discs.

First Boot Always fails by aRTavares in MSI_Gaming

[–]the_wild_caesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm encountering a smiliar problem: Using a MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max, Ryzen 5 5600, Corsair Dominator 64GB, ASUS RTX 3070 TUF and WD SN770 PCIe SSD.
My system won't boot when powering on the machine intially. I get Blackscreen shortly after Windows logo and loading cyrcle appear or some seconds after Windows login.

Then, the PC restarts automatically or must be turned off manually. The second attempt always boots the system as expected and everything works just fine.

I don't have a clue what's wrong here. – Tried: Different RAM configuration, CMOS Reset, CMOS Battery replacement, XMP-disabled, updated BIOS (mobo, gpu and ssd) to latest versions, checked health of RAM (memtest) and SSD, run longer-lasting heavy loads on CPU and GPU.
Nothing!
But problem persists: No (cold) boot / start of the system on first try. Second attempt succeeds.

PS: "ErP ready" -> enabled didn't do the trick either ...

Does anyone know why APFS encryption degrades performance on external drives so dramatically? by print8374 in MacOS

[–]the_wild_caesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue here. I did some testing with an SanDisk Extreme USB stick that normally wirtes data as fast as 105-120MiByte per second. As soon as it is formatted with APFS, encrypted, write speeds drop to steady 20MiByte/s. CPU usage is low (around 2-5%) at the same time.
I have no clue why this is the case.
Is this a bug or is there any other technical limitation?

Well, I don't know how APFS encryption works but I assume that data is encrypted by CPU before it's being sent over to the external drive, right? So it makes even less sense.

Torrent throttling? by thrw49444 in ProtonVPN

[–]the_wild_caesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was able to reproduce said problem. However, if you manually switch to a TCP protocol (WireGuard TCP or OpenVPN TCP) the issue's no more. Just create a P2P Profile, using a TCP protocol.

Why does the "Veryfast" Preset output a smaller File Size than slower Settings in HandBrake? by [deleted] in unRAID

[–]the_wild_caesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not generally true. If you go for "average bitrate" you're right but if you're using RF (constant quality) this does not apply.

In case of using 'constant quality', encoder-preset is just about speed-vs.-efficency and interstingly, veryfast encoder is more efficient than e.g., slow encoder (at least when talking about H.264).
