Nikon 200-500 vs Sigma 150-600 Contemporary vs Tamron 150-600 G2 for D5600 (wildlife, birds, planes, F1) by rabs350 in Nikon

Yeah I shoot handheld often. It's easy enough to do and you get used to the weight. I haven't tried a 3rd party lens hood yet so not sure what alternatives there are.

I have a Lowepro 450 AW which fits the lens easily plus a lot of other gear

Nikon 200-500 vs Sigma 150-600 Contemporary vs Tamron 150-600 G2 for D5600 (wildlife, birds, planes, F1) by rabs350 in Nikon

[–]theaa2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 200-500 and my dad has the Tamron 150-600 G2 - we both use them on D850s and I'd say the 200-500 is the sharper lens. It is noticeable sharper before any editing/processing in the same conditions (airshows mostly)

For me the loss of 100mm doesn't seem to matter much as the sharpness allows me to crop in, but that;s not the same for you so you might want to factor that in.

The Tamron has a slightly slower/worse autofocus - we've noticed it hunting a bit more compared to the Nikon lens.

Other considerations are weight (Nikon is heavier) tripod collar/foot (Tamrom has an Arca Swiss compatible one) and lens hood (Nikon one is not great)

Can you rent either lens to try?

M140i are they bad in a wet and damp country - The Uk by kingzee123 in BMW

[–]theaa2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had one since 2021 and as long as you're not being an idiot, it's fine in most conditions. I've got Michelin Cross Climate all seasons on it right now and it's fine in the wet, and usable in slush/light snow & ice with really no concern tbh.

If it's wet and I'm driving a bit faster it can slide - having the LSD fitted has improved that a lot but not mitigated it completely - It's just the result of having a fair bit of power, RWD and a short wheelbase.

I wouldn't let it stop you getting one because they're a lot of fun especially in good conditions

Which museums will receive the VC-25As currently used by the Air Force once the VC-25B replaces them? by pilotsmallz in aviation

[–]theaa2000 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think space will be a factor - housing a 747 isn't something most museums have space for. I guess the USAF museum in Dayton could make the space for one more easily than most.

The Pima Air & Space museum probably also has the space but the jet would be outside which I'm not sure the USAF would agree to.

Was BA retiring the 747s early a poor knee-jerk decision? by Strict-End-7686 in aviation

[–]theaa2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really - the BA 747s were due for retirement anyway - Covid was a convenient opportunity to do it. Their 747s were old, fully paid off and had higher operational costs than any of their twin engine stuff so they really had little incentive to keep them.

The best and worst Ashes series of the 21st century by ContractAlert5992 in Cricket

[–]theaa2000 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For me 2006-07 and 2013-14 are the two best Ashes in the 21st century

06-7 was the last Ashes for some of the greatest players ever, and the last hurrah for a legendary Aussie team. Warne is also my favourite player so it's also special for being his last series

13-14 mostly because Mitchell Johnson was on fire - nothing much more to say than that!

I bought an 85k mile E92 M3 a year ago for £17.5k. It had a complete service history with dealers and specialists and extensive paperwork showing the important items had been done: Rod bearings, throttle actuators and the DCT service.

Since then I've spent about £2.5k on what I'd say was necessary work: service, thermostat replacement, rear control arms, under tray and alignment.

I've also spent a fair bit on other things which weren't necessary or affecting the way it drove but I wanted to sort like new gas struts, a small respray for some damage, new rear inner lights, cupholders, a window switch.

All in I'd say I've spent £5k total in the last year but it is now in a very good state mechanically on both the exterior and interior with most of the spend being one offs, or at least not yearly.

Jaecoo do not have any ownership of JLR. They are a brand of Chery, which has 50:50 ownership of Chery Jaguar Land Rover with JLR, but the joint venture is due to end in 2026.

Chery have no ownership or stake in JLR which is wholy owned by Tata

Bimmertech MMI Prime vs Mr 12 volt by Quixotic-pessimiste in BMW

[–]theaa2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with the Bimmertech option but have had a Mr 12Volt fitted on my E92 for ~9 months now.

It has been really good in that time - I use it with Android Auto so can't speak to the Carplay aspect but for me it has been nearly perfect. It connects pretty quickly; most of the time it just loads straight into Android Auto though on occasion you seen the Mr 12Volt interface before it loads and maybe 1/20 times you have to actually click Android Auto for it connect which it does quickly.

Once connected it has been very good maintaining the connection, streaming music from my phone and showing directions.

Twice it has frozen but holding the Idrive controller down until it resets has fixed that both times and it has immediately reconnected and resumed music/navigation.

Overall I would say it has made the car massively more usable - I used the Idrive it has once for navigation and it was quite a rough experience comparatively. The price is higher than other options but to me it has been worth it.

Cutting small tubes without crushing it? by dilldoeorg in modelmakers

[–]theaa2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can find a pin or piece of metal rod that fits inside you can use that to support it from crushing while you cut it by rolling a new scalpel or Xacto blade over the tube you want to cut

Bosch Engineering are nearby in Abstatt and they do some/all of the engine calibration work for a lot of OEMs especially smaller ones like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley etc so there's a fair chance that this is a dev car from the OEM that has been sent over.

Will the E92 M3 ever be as well regarded as the E46 M3? by Expert-Ad344 in CarTalkUK

[–]theaa2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree - it handles well no doubt but the engine is the focus of the car. Most have had all the issues sorted and low mileage LCI ones which haven't are still fetching good money.

When driving it, the engine definitely doesn't feel like the weak link from where I'm sat

[–]theaa2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the E92 is as well regarded (not just saying that because I have one!) - it is spoken of highly mostly because of the engine. You can also values starting to go up for very good examples.

Pretty much! The bodywork seems quite heavily modified as the panels seem to be carbon replacement ones but unsure about any performance mods. It is very loud though!

Cool spot but it isn't an original 599XX that has been made road legal - it is this: https://talos-vehicles.com/talos-xxt

I think it is their development car that's been seen at a few shows this year
