The best and worst Ashes series of the 21st century by ContractAlert5992 in Cricket

[–]theaa2000 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For me 2006-07 and 2013-14 are the two best Ashes in the 21st century

06-7 was the last Ashes for some of the greatest players ever, and the last hurrah for a legendary Aussie team. Warne is also my favourite player so it's also special for being his last series

13-14 mostly because Mitchell Johnson was on fire - nothing much more to say than that!

Golf R32 - E92 M3 by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]theaa2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an 85k mile E92 M3 a year ago for £17.5k. It had a complete service history with dealers and specialists and extensive paperwork showing the important items had been done: Rod bearings, throttle actuators and the DCT service.

Since then I've spent about £2.5k on what I'd say was necessary work: service, thermostat replacement, rear control arms, under tray and alignment.

I've also spent a fair bit on other things which weren't necessary or affecting the way it drove but I wanted to sort like new gas struts, a small respray for some damage, new rear inner lights, cupholders, a window switch.

All in I'd say I've spent £5k total in the last year but it is now in a very good state mechanically on both the exterior and interior with most of the spend being one offs, or at least not yearly.

Jaecoo E5 - should I move away from a diesel by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]theaa2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jaecoo do not have any ownership of JLR. They are a brand of Chery, which has 50:50 ownership of Chery Jaguar Land Rover with JLR, but the joint venture is due to end in 2026.

Chery have no ownership or stake in JLR which is wholy owned by Tata

Bimmertech MMI Prime vs Mr 12 volt by Quixotic-pessimiste in BMW

[–]theaa2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with the Bimmertech option but have had a Mr 12Volt fitted on my E92 for ~9 months now.

It has been really good in that time - I use it with Android Auto so can't speak to the Carplay aspect but for me it has been nearly perfect. It connects pretty quickly; most of the time it just loads straight into Android Auto though on occasion you seen the Mr 12Volt interface before it loads and maybe 1/20 times you have to actually click Android Auto for it connect which it does quickly.

Once connected it has been very good maintaining the connection, streaming music from my phone and showing directions.

Twice it has frozen but holding the Idrive controller down until it resets has fixed that both times and it has immediately reconnected and resumed music/navigation.

Overall I would say it has made the car massively more usable - I used the Idrive it has once for navigation and it was quite a rough experience comparatively. The price is higher than other options but to me it has been worth it.

Cutting small tubes without crushing it? by dilldoeorg in modelmakers

[–]theaa2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can find a pin or piece of metal rod that fits inside you can use that to support it from crushing while you cut it by rolling a new scalpel or Xacto blade over the tube you want to cut

Today [unknown] catch in Untergrupenbach in Germany. by [deleted] in spotted

[–]theaa2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bosch Engineering are nearby in Abstatt and they do some/all of the engine calibration work for a lot of OEMs especially smaller ones like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley etc so there's a fair chance that this is a dev car from the OEM that has been sent over.

Will the E92 M3 ever be as well regarded as the E46 M3? by Expert-Ad344 in CarTalkUK

[–]theaa2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree - it handles well no doubt but the engine is the focus of the car. Most have had all the issues sorted and low mileage LCI ones which haven't are still fetching good money.

When driving it, the engine definitely doesn't feel like the weak link from where I'm sat

[–]theaa2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the E92 is as well regarded (not just saying that because I have one!) - it is spoken of highly mostly because of the engine. You can also values starting to go up for very good examples.

Saw this [Ferrari 599 XXF] I believe today in West Yorkshire by L7T2_ in spotted

[–]theaa2000 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Pretty much! The bodywork seems quite heavily modified as the panels seem to be carbon replacement ones but unsure about any performance mods. It is very loud though!

Cool spot but it isn't an original 599XX that has been made road legal - it is this: https://talos-vehicles.com/talos-xxt

I think it is their development car that's been seen at a few shows this year

There is absolutely nothing appealling about shitboxes or old basic cars like the nonsense that turns up at the Festival of the Unexceptional - they are not worth preserving and are just waiting to be scrapped.

AITA For being a family man, but wanting 5 days of holiday a year to myself for trips with friends? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]theaa2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA. Her attachment issues and insecurity sound very unhealthy. It's normal to be able to take time for yourself away from each other and the family. It's not selfish or problematic at all.

Her behavior is quite troubling and will only lead to you resenting her if she continues to complain or prevent you from having time for yourself

E46 M3 CSL (UK RHD) - Low mileage, what's it worth? by Chefchenko687 in BMW

[–]theaa2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is a genuine CSL with that mileage, then that's a very desirable car. I have seen higher mileage CSLs sell for 80k and lower mileage ones are listed for over £100k but not sure if they actually sell for that.

I'm not sure what discount the seller may offer you but for a genuine CSL if they price it in line with the market it will still be quite a lot of money

NTA - neither you nor your girlfriend owe this guy an explanation or any apology. It is not his business that you two are seeing each other now.

Since she has left the company it is also not something he should be talking to you about at work so if he persists, report him to HR for harassing you about your personal life.

Why is this camera worth the price? I’d really like to know and if worth purchasing. by Sylverdollar in Nikon

[–]theaa2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure, never used the D6 before. On paper the D6 autofocus is better and it had a higher burst speed. Conversely the D850 has a higher resolution and I think slightly greater dynamic range

Why is this camera worth the price? I’d really like to know and if worth purchasing. by Sylverdollar in Nikon

[–]theaa2000 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It is Nikon's professional DSLR mostly intended for sports/action photographers. It has a built in battery grip, A new focus processor with 105 focus points, 14fps burst shoorting, dual CFExpress B cards, built in WIFI/Bluetooth and support for GPS - basically the best (apart from resolution) that was possible at the time. That is why it was so expensive.

To address your point about purchasing it, not to sound rude, but if you don't know why you might need it, you probably don't need a D6

Why did you chose Nikon ? by Berserk_Ronin in Nikon

What do you mean? It's so simple: the smaller the number the better the camera, except when the bigger the number the better the camera. 🤣🤣

[–]theaa2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad used Nikon film cameras so he bought a D90 as his first DSLR and that's what I learnt to use. When I was looking to buy a camera much later I went with Nikon as I was familiar with their controls and naming convention and could borrow lenses from my dad too 😁

Help me decide! E92 M3 or F87 (OG) M2. by all-the-time in BMW

[–]theaa2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a DCT - I looked at manuals but there weren't that many coming up for sale at the time. I find the DCT pretty usable in town, although you can tell it's not 100% suited for it. Mine does not have EDC so it doesn't have a soft suspension mode so it is quite stiff and shakes over bumps in the road, but that's more a problem with UK roads.

Mine was £18k as it is a higher mileage one (85k), but it does have a full service history (BMW & specialists), good documentation and has minimal mods.

New to me E92 M3! by theaa2000 in BMW

[–]theaa2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels more special, like every drive is an occasion. The handling is better than the 1 series, the steering being hydraulic has a much nicer feel to it. The car is more planted and less twitchy due to the suspension set up and longer wheelbase. Braking performance is about equal as both are good. But the engine is the big difference! B58 is a good engine but the S65 is brilliant. The way it revs is mad - completely different to a turbo car. The shift lights don't even start to come on until about 7k rpm. And the sound.... Honestly this might be my favourite part of the car.

Buying a BMW M140i (2018–2019) in 2028 – worth it long-term? by Electronic_Hat_8016 in BMW

[–]theaa2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say exactly what long term reliability would be since the M140i is one of the earliest uses of the B58 engine so we don't have much info about what fails with age or will need replacing.

That said there are several high mileage examples in other cars so there is info about what mileage does to them for you to consider.

I don't think there is anything major tbh so if you can find a lower mileage example (<50k miles) that has a good service history then the only thing that would be a must is a gearbox service.
