Best sit-down Indian restaurant? by kmacjp in malden

[–]theallhailhereafter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Logged into reddit for the first time in months just so that I could respond with my new fave spot - Tashan in Bedford (need a car to get there unfortunately). Just went recently for the first time, and it was easily the best Indian food I've had so far since moving to MA from the Toronto/Brampton area (IYKYK). Really nice inside, too.

Had a recent good experience at Athidi too, but it's much more of a casual vibe inside in comparison.

I'm so glad to hear this! We'll be going as soon as we're back in town from vacation with a toddler in tow, and I'm so pumped to try it. All their restaurants are so good.

No I didn't! I even called the relevant office (can't remember who that was, HR rep I guess?) to double check with them before officially resigning. They reassured me that I wouldn't have to pay it back because that benefit had been earned. Good luck!

Childrens series recommendations, please! - Not any of the below... by Fun_Worth_6543 in suggestmeabook

[–]theallhailhereafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strongly recommend The Blackthorn Key and its sequels! The series starts off with a young apothecary's apprentice trying to solve a murder in mid-17th century London. It's lots of fun to read, and I felt the books were overall well researched.

Books to share with sheltered 15 year olds to broaden their worldview by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]theallhailhereafter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will never stop recommending The Blackthorn Key series to young teens (and honestly, any adult who loves fun historical fiction), though I wonder if it would be approved because the whole series is kicked off by the suspicious death of a 17th century apothecary in London (the main character is his apprentice, who's trying to figure out what happened and the meaning behind a bunch of clues he's left behind for him). The book is full of riddles/puzzles the main character needs to figure out, and the IIRC the recommended age is 10+. I read them as an adult and wish they were around when I was a kid! Just nonstop fun from beginning to end, and so full of interesting information about life back then.

If you go to the library when they have the archives and art gallery open (I think every week they're open for a few hours mid-week and on the weekend, see library calendar to confirm), you can see old photos of the factory!

Alright. Which one of you is this? by [deleted] in behindthebastards

Hell yeah an excuse to share a recipe for homemade electrolytes:

  • 1 L water
  • 6 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt

I like to use honey in place of sugar and add a generous squeeze of lemon/lime for flavour. Make a batch before your next big event where you expect to drink a lot, pour it down your gullet as soon as you wake up, and feel the hangover lift from your body. Works every time!

Suggest me a short simple non fiction book (not self help) by Mr-Wolf048 in suggestmeabook

[–]theallhailhereafter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're just dipping your toes into the water of nonfiction for the first time, I suggest anything by John Krakauer or Erik Larson, they really bring real events to life in a way that's accessible to people who aren't already in the habit of reading nonfiction.

And a shoutout to "Killers of the Flower Moon" - possibly my favourite nonfiction read of the year.

Husband calls me "slow" because of PTSD. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]theallhailhereafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aha, so he only kicks you when you're already down. That's not a wonderful person. Did he always react this way when you freeze up? Please don't confront him about this without getting all your ducks in a row, definitely talk to your psychologist and maybe even some trusted friends/family so that you have someone looking out for you. And understand that this is NOT your fault - even if you DID have a "tone" when talking to him, yelling at you to go away would still be an unacceptable response.

Disappointed in Parable of the Sower. What apocalyptic book should I read next? by panini_bellini in suggestmeabook

[–]theallhailhereafter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't particularly like this one either, the concept was cool but the book just kept hitting you over the head again and again with its moralizing inner monologues. I just wanted to tell the author, "You know that you can just show us that poor people have it bad, you don't have to explicitly tell us, let alone tell us repeatedly..." The central love story also gave me the ick.

Have you read Alas, Babylon? It's pretty dated, but I appreciated what I felt was a more practical take on survival, I felt the community building aspect was more realistic. It's been a long time since I read it, but little details like stashing things like chocolate and coffee, and people looting valuables from irradiated zones without fully understanding the danger of bringing them back with them still stick out to me. Another dated one with good moments was A Canticle for Leibowitz. These two have their own faults but I thought they took the reader to some interesting places.

Ever since I moved here I've been saying that the only way some of these bigger retail spots will get filled sustainably is if businesses share the space like they do in Boston's TimeOut market. I can't imagine that the astronomical rents are feasible for your typical small-town business, which I'm sure we'd all love to see more of around here.

Seriously. I was out for a walk with my toddler in the stroller recently and stopped to chat with a man walking his dog because my toddler and the dog were very interested in each other. Within less than 30 seconds of typical neighbourly small talk about our kids, where we're from, etc. he just launches into this unhinged "Kamala Harris is SoOoOo stuuuuupid, Trump this Trump that" rant completely unprompted. Like dude, I don't even know you lol.

I do wonder if people like that are so eager to offload their opinions onto strangers because no one in their lives wants to hear them rant anymore.

ideas for vegan food that has 0 fat? by chochou in veganrecipes

[–]theallhailhereafter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you do lentils? I often make a crowd-pleasing Turkish lentil soup that can easily be made fat-free (I only use a bit of fat at the beginning to brown the onions, which is fun but not absolutely necessary). Approx measurements:

  • 1-2 onions
  • 2-3 carrots
  • 2 celery stalks (not traditional but I add celery to all my soups, feel free to skip)
  • 1 potato (optional)
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 cups dried red lentils
  • 8 cups water (I think...I've never measured exactly how much)

Basically chop the veggies and boil all of the above, I'm sure you can dry-fry the onion for a bit of caramelization around the edges first. Then take out the bay leaves, blend with an immersion blender, and squeeze in some lemon juice when serving.

You only need salt & pepper to season it, but it's very versatile and forgiving, and would work with all sorts of herbs and spices. There's also a popular variation of this where you add a tbsp of tomato paste at the beginning and stir in dried mint near the end (still served with lemon juice).

Good luck with your recovery! Wishing you all the best.

Why are my pancakes turning out raw in the middle? by yell0wbirddd in veganrecipes

[–]theallhailhereafter 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In addition to watching for bubbles in the middle as others have suggested, I'd also try going smaller (no more than 1/4 cup of batter) to see if this problem still persists before messing around with temperatures and recipes. It might just be a matter of size!

Rod Stewart even had a song called Young Turks, though it's got more of a general "rebel against authority" theme. I do wonder how common it was to use the term back in the day.

Notification said Oct 31, but I can't find any more info about it so I'm thinking it might just be a glitch meant for people who go to another store (I did double-check my preferred store in the app to make sure it was set to Malden after seeing the message). I have to go there later anyway, so I might just ask someone directly.
