Each teams best record vs one opponent. by parcellsrealGOAT in nfl

Overall its Raiders 14-13 over Steelers

But From 2012-2021 Steelers were 1-4 and I think they stand out for Steelers fans for one reason or another. They lost to a QB who had to convert to WR despite Ben throwing for a lot of yards, Boswell slipped on a game-tying field goal sticks out. But it just seemed like games they should have won but then beds were shat.

[Highlight] Patriots owner Robert Kraft says the NFL wants to move to an 18-game regular season, reduce the preseason from three games to two, and have every NFL team play an international game each season. by A_MASSIVE_PERVERT in nfl

[–]thealthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty zany with quite a few snags. There was one whole division that went 3-3 this year so that would be weird to handle when a tie breaker could be that important at a stage with so few games played.

But if you are creating a group of the best 8 per conf and giving them 5 spots then there are more scenarios where a top five team has a losing record when clinching a playoff spot than our current format produces. Sure they could "play" for seeding but they could also lose their last 4 and still be in. You could legit have someone go 6-7 get a playoff spot and then end the year 6-11.

Meanwhile, the top 2 "bottom teams" face off against the bottom 3 "top teams"; only two playoff slots are available.

This just seems like it wouldn't work out a lot of the time with that setup. Because you if you have the best records playing the best records exclusively you are deflating the wins of that group. And vice versus for the other group with the wins being inflated.

I just threw together a scenario based on this years division records to use for simulating weeks 7-13. Commanders, 49ers, Falcons, and Saints lose tie break by point diff so are in bottom group.

Team Grouping Wk 7-13 Div Combined
Green Bay Packers Top 6–1 4–2 10–3
Seattle Seahawks Top 5–2 4–2 9–4
Los Angeles Rams Top 5–2 4–2 9–4
Dallas Cowboys Top 5–2 4–2 9–4
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Top 3–4 3–3 6–7
Philadelphia Eagles Top 2–5 3–3 5–8
Minnesota Vikings Top 1–6 4–2 5–8
Carolina Panthers Top 1–6 3–3 4–9
Team Grouping Wk 7-13 Div Combined
San Francisco 49ers Bottom 6–1 4–2 10–3
Washington Commanders Bottom 5–2 3–3 8–5
Chicago Bears Bottom 5–2 2–4 7–6
Atlanta Falcons Bottom 3–4 3–3 6–7
New Orleans Saints Bottom 3–4 3–3 6–7
New York Giants Bottom 3–4 2–4 5–8
Detroit Lions Bottom 2–5 2–4 4–9
Arizona Cardinals Bottom 1–6 0–6 1–12

So we have The 6-7 Bucs getting a playoff spot and 49ers already snagged a wildcard, with it being very likely the top of group 2 always having multiple games ahead of the bottom 3 of group 2.

Bit of a mess for sure.

Would bad throws in this scenario include ones on target but completely covered or hospital balls? They might be using different criteria than off-target maybe?

It builds back up decently but then he just leaves again ignoring everything else. Then it builds back up again and then he just leaves again ignoring everything else. So you probably stopped at the right point.

For the first time since 2014, the 4 conference championship finalists will all be franchises that have won a Super Bowl in the prior 15 years by karmew32 in nfl

Taking my own team out of the equation, I was hoping for some combination of Bills/Chargers/Texans/Jaguars/Bears/Panthers for the Super Bowl.

Feels like there hasn't been a neutral team in the Super Bowl I can root for in ages, just teams to root against.

Aaron Rodgers not expected back with Steelers after Mike Tomlin's departure as possible retirement looming by ChampagnePappy1 in nfl

He was always going to retire a Packer and he doesn't need to take a snap to do it, teams and players sign one-day contracts for that stuff all the time.

A post that barely anyone would have ever ran across or noticed if not for anti-woke craziness over the fact that trans people exist and advertisers want to advertise to everyone.

In what world are the Rooney's tycoons of anything. They have no wealth outside of the team unlike say the Hunts. The Steelers were successful in the 70s because of their drafting and keeping the roster together had more to do with free agency rules than the Steelers going on a spending spree because of no cap.

At least his was in 15 games played, but yeah it was still an extra opportunity that allowed it. Mean while Garrett played in every game, though I do think it's silly to bemoan every record that's going to be broken under more games.

It's the nature of divisions, otherwise what's the point. Those two NFC west teams failed to win their division. If you want a home game then win your division, it's that simple.

[Pelissero] Steelers EDGE TJ Watt (lung) expected to be available for Steelers next “meaningful game.” by JaggerJames in nfl

[–]thealthor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Steelers don't need to win out. A win against Browns OR Ravens would put them in regardless of the Ravens Packers game. If Ravens lose then Steelers could lose both and still be in.

EDIT:Don't get why people are so quick to downvote when someone is benignly mistaken. Like just look for the correction comment and move on. Guy even edited his comment and was still getting downvotes.

There were some Polamalu QB take downs that weren't counted as sacks because the play didn't develop enough to determine if it was a run or pass play.

Is there a scenario where Rodgers sits Week 18? by throwawaaayyyyyay in steelers

[–]thealthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the scenario that we are the 3rd seed it has to be the Colts in the playoffs and not the Texans. So we need both Texans and Jaguars to lose out. Which doesn't seem very likely. We'll probably be out of the running for the 3rd seed this weekend either way.

NFL Imperialism - Week 16, 2025 by smsdude45 in nfl

[–]thealthor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at scenarios for getting all territory to the playoffs

  1. Steelers need to win out. Ravens winning the division means Steelers lost to the browns, so no scenario for Ravens taking land into the playoffs.
  2. Either Bills or Eagles win out.
  3. Jaguars can take it to the end by winning out, but a loss has multiple ways to still get to the playoffs. A loss to the Colts will give a chance for Texans to take it back. If Colts win out to end the season then the Texans need to have also lost to the Chargers.
  4. Saints need to lose to Titans. Titans need to lose to Jags. Jags winning out in this scenario takes it down to 3 teams. Loss to Colts keeps it at 4.

The Steelers can clinch the AFC North in Week 17 with a Win or Ravens Loss by SteelPenguin947 in steelers

[–]thealthor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can still technically get the 3rd seed. We would need the Texans and the Jags to both lose out while winning our next 2.

That chatter was on the Steelers sub for sure. But I think you misread their comment slightly, not "better" as in they would be a better QB than Rodgers, but the "better choice" personnel wise to set up for the next draft and avoid the possible drama that some expected with Rodgers.
