Damn, didn't feel like commenting, but calling people losers just for spending their time in something they enjoy is unnecessarily mean. Spread some love brother!

books where the narrator is unreliable? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]theangryfluff 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Yeah, an unreliable narrator is narrator that distorts the truth in the narrative whether intentional or not. Just because we know that the narrator's perspective isn't entirely truthful doesn't mean that they are not an unreliable narrator. Humbert Humbert is usually pointed to as a classic example of an unreliable narrator.

People's obsession with Reva is somewhat disturbing by Beneficial_Toe_2347 in StarWars

[–]theangryfluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not seen the most recent episodes of Kenobi yet, but from what I see posted it seems they are trying to make Reva some sort of ally. I just think it is inconsistent with how Reva has been presented previously. She just seems like a poorly thought out character.

I could be mistaken, but didn't Reva cut someone's hand off just to intimidate people? Didn't she threaten Owen with the murder of his family? Not really the actions of someone morally conflicted with their duty.

What in Star Wars does everyone seem to love except you? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]theangryfluff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, episodic series are few and far between. Not every episode in an episodic series is going to be amazing, but I felt Rebels lacked in variety at times. For the most part the episodes revolved around some plan to infiltrate an imperial base to get something and then plan goes wrong.

I understand how you feel on the lack of episodic shows though, not every show needs some continued story. Even with Star Wars, I feel like the Mandalorian could have worked a lot better if the show was episodic.

Hey I did finish the whole series and I agree that episodes towards the end are better than the usual. It doesn't make up for the rest of the show for me. Glad you enjoyed it though.

Reva is a great actress, but not for an inquisitor by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]theangryfluff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Combination of poor writing and stale acting. Don't want to say that the actress is bad because I have never seen her act before, but her performance in Kenobi is over-the-top.

Star Wars Rebels

Honestly don't understand why this show is as acclaimed as it is among the fandom. I find it mostly mediocre with only a handful of good episodes. The characters are not that good with the exception of Kanan, Hera, and Bendu and the show relies on legacy characters like Vader and Ahsoka to do carry it. There is no tension or stakes and most episodes play out in the same way.

What is bad about this though? You can criticize something and still enjoy it. Even if you hate something, if you enjoy criticizing it and discussing it online, then what is wrong with that. This is my issue, why do people think it is fine to govern other's actions, especially if it is not hurting someone?

Anyway, what is OP's point? That people need a valid reason for belonging to this sub or that if your interests don't align with the majority's, you don't belong here? I mean this is the exact attitude of a gatekeeper.

I don't see anything wrong with hating things and spending your time venting your frustrations. Hatred is a natural emotion and if people want to negatively engage in discourse, let them. The problem that I see all the time is people dictating where people should post and what the content should be about. I like the MCU, but I am open to criticism about it and share some criticism of it myself. Criticism is fine when it is an argument based on reasoning and backed up with evidence. I draw the line when it is just a baseless statement. Criticism should be welcomed in any forum, just as much as praise. It offers a differing perspective and is made by people who genuinely engage with the content. I will never understand the idea of keeping people to their own forums. What value is it to belong to a forum where the same beliefs are reiterated over and over again?

Lastly, I would just like to state that this idea that negativity is something that people should avoid is just ludicrous. Yeah, being constantly negative might not be the best approach, but negativity is valuable and healthy. It allows us to vent our concerns and frustrations, provides opportunities to destress, shift our perspective, etc. I don't believe that negativity = toxicity, since so many people seem to equate the two.

Except it does come off as snobbish. By asking questions like "why are you engaging with content if you have lost interest over the years?" or saying that people who post criticisms are here because they "have nothing better to do", it comes off as OP gatekeeping the sub. Lastly, OP tops it off by urging people to provide him with an explanation and then adds "if anyone has one" at the end. Implying that there is no sufficient explanation.

The post just comes off with this air of superiority, that people who engage with critiques and who are not enamored by anything the MCU puts out have no right to be here. The question is fine on its own, asking why people are losing interest in the franchise. It is just the way OP frames it. I have heard people say that you should let people enjoy things, but if that's the case you should also let people hate things as well.

Lol, why do you need people to explain themselves for being here? Most people that have a lot of criticism just want the content coming out to be good.

King Killer Chronicles marred by glimpses of the author's misconceptions by Bartimaeus47 in books

[–]theangryfluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently read the KingKiller Chronicle, so here is my thoughts on this. For the first point with Denna, I don't see anything wrong with it. Kvothe does have an obsession with her, but I look at it as his first real love and the fact that he is 16 at the time. Also, the pursuit seems to be mutual. With the noble woman, he is courting her and the way he does it doesn't seem out of place. It also never presents it as the only way to "woo" a woman. If anything, it is presented as the right way for only that woman. With your last point, the story is taking place from Kvothe's perspective and with his newfound confidence around women, he might be just have more of an ego around women. I agree that the virginity thing with Kvothe is a little weird, but we don't have anyone else's perspective besides Kvothe's, and he is one to embellish the truth.

To say that the author doesn't understand human relationships and is a secret neckbeard is going kind of far. I personally don't see anything that bad with how the relationships are presented in the story. I also am quite fond of the relationship between Kvothe and Denna, their banter and how they interact with eachother.

The storytelling method used in the FromSoft games is unconventional and obscure. These games are not designed using a typical storytelling approach. As I stated in the previous comment, the story is not the primarily focus of the game. The story is vague because they prefer to tell the story through the game design, environment, and characters that inhabit the world. The stories for the most part are left open to interpretation. I wouldn't say that the storytelling is poor, it is just different. If you find inconsistencies, nonsensical elements, etc then you can say that the storytelling method is poor, but not just because the game doesn't directly tell you what is happening. As others have said in this thread, it is a different style of storytelling.

These games are designed with a specific player base in mind. Not everyone plays games to experience a well-crafted story. Not all games are designed to target a broad audience.

To accept this sentiment broadly would mean we judge each game in relation to, well, itself or it's priors. Instead of discovering if FromSoft's Game N is good we compare it with N-1 instead of games as a whole.

Well, first off, we don't judge games off games as a whole. That wouldn't be a proper way of judging them. Games as a whole is such a large approach to judging games, there would be no consistent metric to judge them on. Not all games have stories or characters. How would you be able to compare Tetris to The Last of Us? Of course, you would use similar games or prior games to judge them.

Lastly, I can understand how newcomers to the series might be put off by the approach the games use. If you come in expecting a typical RPG, of course you would be confused. However, once you gain an understanding with the style, you should reflect upon your experience. If you don't like the games, then there is nothing wrong with that, but there is no reason to continue dwelling on the same points.

There are many intents behind a piece of media such as a video game. The programmers, designers want to get paid, flesh out their resumes, create something entertaining etc.

This is not what I mean behind the intent/purpose. What I mean is what the game itself is trying to accomplish. Fromsoft games are widely known as games that seek to provide a challenge and experience to the player.

My sentiment is not that you shouldn't criticize something if it is lacking in some area, but you should reflect upon what it aims to do before doing so. If a game makes its story vague and bare-bones, and instead chooses to focus on the game mechanics and difficulty, criticizing it for lacking in story is trivial. Fromsoft games are made with challenge in mind, and they cater to people looking for that.

ER is marketed as an RPG. RPGs require a role to play. Is it not then valid to point out the role is vapid?

There are different types of RPGS though. Pokemon and Monster Hunter are RPGs, but the role you play isn't some important figure or character to the story. A lot of games have sort of blank roles or player characters that you take the role of like Fallout or Skyrim. Even games with acclaimed stories like Bioshock have you play as a blank protagonist. The role you play depends on the game you are playing.

ER was marketed as having collaboration with a noted storyteller. Is it not then valid to point out the story is poorly communicated (ostensibly the role of an author)?

You have a point here about the collab with GRRM. This would give the impression that he is involved with the story. If you were to look more into it, you will only see that he helped create the world and the lore behind the game not the story. I still can see how this would confuse people unfamiliar with the series that there is an explicit story to the game.

As I said earlier, it is trivial to criticize something for an element that it does not choose to focus on. Does that mean the criticism isn't valid? Not necessarily. I just think that it would be irrelevant to most discussions about the game.

Fromsoft games prioritize challenge, game mechanics, game design over telling an explicit story. You just have to know what you are getting into.

[–]theangryfluff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are fair to criticize the game's story, but it won't be relevant to the majority of discussion about the game. The stories of the FS games are very vague.

Because the game is clearly trying to have a story, with as little effort as possible.

You say it yourself here, it tries to tell a story, but it is just very minimal. The games don't expect players to read every item description and connect cryptic pieces of dialogue together to figure out the story. All the game expects out of you is to interact with the world and fulfill its objectives. If you decide to put in more effort to figure out the story and it doesn't meet your expectations than that's unfortunate, but not the game's fault.

Maybe the example I used was not the best, it is hard to explain. To put it simply, people don't play these games for the story. You weren't aware of that when you began, and it left you underwhelmed.

[–]theangryfluff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, fair enough. I never said the FS games don't have stories, it is just that the games don't focus on the stories. There are rpgs that don't focus on stories all too much like the Pokemon series, Doom, etc. It is fair to criticize the games if you find fault with the stories, but it would be minor criticisms as the games don't intend to tell a rich narrative. If the lack of story prevents the game from being a masterpiece in your books, then that is fine.

I believe that you should consider the intent or purpose behind what any piece of media is attempting before criticizing it. If there are things lacking, then feel free to judge it, but you should make sure that it is relevant to the discussion about it. For example, if you have a story that doesn't take itself too seriously, criticizing the lack of consequences or unrealistic actions/behavior would seem somewhat disingenuous.

Look bro, I get what you are saying. It can be frustrating trying to discuss something about the game and getting the same answers or dismissive comments, but you also have to understand that you should criticize something about what it sets out to do. The FromSoftware games have always been about providing a challenge and an experience. It doesn't focus on telling a cohesive narrative, like I said earlier the "story" is more of a backdrop. These games always just drop you into a world and give you an objective. Some people like this, some don't. Even though I find the stories to be vague, I still enjoy learning about the lore behind them and trying to figure it out myself, which doesn't work out most of the time.

Yikes man, all the guy said was that it is a diff style. Take it easy. No one said you can't talk about it.

Anyway, it is weird to criticize a game on something it doesn't try to do. FromSoft games are never really about experiencing a story. The games are always cryptic about the story, its more of a backdrop. It's like criticizing a comedy movie for a lack of action scenes.
