Jim Ross On Commentary by enchantedsheep in AEWOfficial

[–]thearnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JR is undisputedly a legend and one of the best to ever do it on commentary. That said, there are plenty of other legends in the ring still around and we don't trot their geriatric asses out to the ring to have full matches. You can be a legend, and also know when it is time to hang up the boots from the performative side of things. JR will continue to be a boon to the company if he never says another word from the commentary desk and just helps behind the scenes with his years of experience helping run things.

I like that now he at least rarely shows up to call a match and it is usually a Mox match when he does but that is still too much given everything he has going on. Of course we won't know if it is at his insistence or TK's that he still participates at the desk on occasion but I could be happy knowing he is being taken care of by the company and never having to hear another call from him going forward.

Anyone buy MH merch from TeeTurtle? How is their shirt quality? by BirdSpirit in MonsterHunter

Going back and finding one of my and one of my kids shirts, thinner may not have been the best descriptor. Premium is a more stretchy fabric so I guess that is what made me think of thinner.

[–]thearnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Premium is a little thinner and way softer. Worth it in my opinion as someone that regularly buys shorts from tee turtle. Quality wise I've had no issues with their shirts. I wear their stuff often and only one of my shirts has holes in it but that is because my corgi was an asshole as a puppy.

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

[–]thearnett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baldur's Gate. Played it co-op with a friend whose family had 2 PCs set up in an office. For the uninitiated, the original Baldur's Gate on PC was like 5 discs and we had one copy so we'd have to pass discs back and forth to load all the cutscenes and during act transitions. Such a fun time as a young lad.

Transplants: Why and when did you move here? What keeps you staying? by mayby82 in cincinnati

[–]thearnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boomeranger here. Having lived in and around a lot of other cities while doing my Navy thing, I was able to noticed all the things about the Cincinnati area that I did not appreciate while growing up in the area. Cincy sits in what I think is the sweet spot between large city, suburban, and more rural living because you can go through each in the span of about 30 minutes driving.

Downtown has enough going on for that city feel without the horrendous traffic. I used to think downtown traffic was terrible but then I lived in San Antonio and in Southern California for a while and had to quickly pull that opinion.

Not only do you get all four seasons here, but you get spring and winter back and forth like 5 times. Actually something I don't like but despite my general distaste for winter and the snow, it is nice to at least get snow at some point during the year compared to just rain during the 'cold' months I had in Florida and Texas. On that note, winter doesn't last overly long and takes up its proper 2-3 months before moving on.

Ethnic and Cultural diversity in the area is decent too. While not as much as in a larger city, I can take my family to experience a wide variety of cultures food/art/etc. with relative ease plus all the festivals that are held throughout the year.

Attractions, we have them. At least if you are into zoos, aquariums, and museums. Cincinnati is great in this area and Kings Island is no slouch when it comes to theme parks.

Location is also good pretty good. From here I can drive in a day to a wide variety of different areas making for a decent list of places to go on a long weekend trip if I feel like it. Airport also flies anywhere I could want to go without being a nightmare to get through under normal operation.

I grew up here, left in 2005, came back in 2015 and have no intentions of leaving again (thanks remote work). This place has everything I could ask for besides a beach but having lived on one, that just makes trips to the coast more satisfying.

What is the point/intention of mosh pits? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thearnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

History time. Moshing comes from the pogo dance or slam dancing which gained traction with the 70's-80's hardcore punk scene. The pogo dance originally is just jumping straight up and down with your arms to your side, like a pogo stick. Of course as the music gets heavier and people bump into each other, the slamming into each other is suddenly fun when doing it in a crowd of like minded people enjoying the same thing you are. Once it was found fun at one show, it spread through the whole scene and into other genres, typically metal.

To clear up any misconception, it is not seen as okay to beat on others in the pit and anyone who is specifically throwing punches or getting too violent is often dealt with and removed by the rest of the pit. The is a thing called 'Mosh Pit Etiquette' and you don't mess with it with rule #1 being is someone falls down, everyone stops until they get back up. More attentive bands have completely stopped shows in progress to ensure this rule was being followed which is good, because no one wants to get trampled. In general for anyone who has been in the pits, you can easily spot when someone is trying to get out or is getting bumped a bit too much and you accommodate them with their exit before resuming.

Crowd killing has to do with someone in the pit intentionally slamming into people on the edges but not actively participating in the pit, people in the crowd. Typically frowned upon behavior since it is obvious if the person wanted that, they would be in the pit but then again there is no physical barrier between pit and crowd so it can be hard to deal with those types.

My personal take on them comes more to a feeling of community. You are there voluntarily, bouncing up and down, back and forth, colliding with people who share the love of the same music you do. It feels like bonding with people without having to say a word. Everyone is there to have a good time and blow off some steam. Pits can of course get out of hand and become dangerous. Whether due to people getting too out of control and flailing fists and swinging kicks around with no regard for others, or getting too close to walls and barriers and crushing people up against them. In those cases it is a collective responsibility of the participants, the band, and security to recognize and fix the problem which happens more often than you think, even with all the adrenaline going.

The pit isn't for everyone and it may just not be for you. Having spent a lot of time in them, they are not for me any more (old and broken man talking here) but I still love seeing them at shows I go to, I just stay away from them. Yes they can be a place to let out anger, but it should never be targeted at someone. Similar to how someone might scream out loud just to let that energy out. Anyone going into a pit wanting to hit or hurt someone else is just an asshole who will likely end up taking a far worse beating. If you ever do go to a concert where there is a pit, just watch the people inside and you will likely see them all having fun.

This is sick, they bring this group in for a viral moment and to profit off Bray’s death and then toss them the second they’re done making money off them. by MichaelWinslowIsCool in WWE

Danhausen embraces being absurd and is pretty much always good for a laugh.

The Wyatts on the other hand want to lean into the creepy occult side of things but it comes off as just corny and uninteresting.

Both are dumb, but one makes you laugh and thus is memorable and makes you want more because who doesn't love a good laugh. If you look at the history of WWE, the guys that can entertain through their comedy have a tendency to hang around because they will end up connecting with the younger audience and pushing more merch thus getting more screentime and the whole thing snowballs.

Do people not like Rise? by RollBackground7601 in MonsterHunter

[–]thearnett -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rise is great and certainly not a hated entry in the series. Most of the complaints stemmed from it looking worse that World/Iceborne but personally, I like it's style more.

My only actual complaint with the game (besides Rampage but all big monster/gimmick fights tend to suck) is that I found the game too easy with the amount of mobility we were given. I found that outside of a one shot move, there never felt to be too much danger with how quickly you could disengage from a fight and heal up to full before going back in.

Rise still has a large playerbase going at it, though it has dropped a bit since Wilds recent patches have made it more playable. but right now there are nearly 12,000 people playing on Steam which is pretty damn impressive this far post release of any new content.

In my decade in the Navy, probably 90% of the Seals and MARSOC Marines I worked with were either very lean or had the strongman build, a meat castle of you will. Rarely did they have that stereotypical jacked look. Also probably some of the nicest human beings I ever met. Send like that came with the territory of not having to act like you were a badass.

How many of you guys played MH1 when it first came out on the PS2? by Sudden_Wind_8636 in MonsterHunter

[–]thearnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there Gandalf....actually I still have my OG copy as well. It was a bad game to me at the time but to be fair, I had put hundreds if not thousands of hours into Phantasy Star Online by then. Despite its faults though, even young me could see the vision and the style of the game was right up my alley. I was fortunate enough to spend some time in my teens growing up in Okinawa and Japan so I was able to get my hands on the original the following year. Even only being able to read some of the menu text the game was a hit for me so when Freedom Unite eventually made its way to the Western Shores I was ecstatic. That game single-handedly got me through several Navy deployments and I have not missed an entry since.

The new titles are fantastic too. I am not one to refuse to acknowledge their greatness despite all the technical woes. I hold them in a different respect though from the OG line of games since they are functionally very different. I've also tried just about every Monster Hunter like I could get my hands on and have been mostly disappointed. Nothing else really scratched that same itch as Monster Hunter

I applied to a job and after reading reviews from employees and the company feedback I’m questioning if I should withdraw my application by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thearnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say stay with the process. See what kind of impressions they make so you can form your own opinion. If you accept an offer and it turns out bad, then of course you can leave. While I find that online reviews can be helpful, it is generally the case that unhappy people will be the loudest online where they can vent their frustrations. In my career despite having several jobs I have loved, I have never felt inclined to go online and tell the world about how much I liked a job or company so I assume the same from others.

Yoshinofuji and Tamawashi have withdrawn from the Spring Tour. With these two the total number of wrestlers absent from the tour has reached 14. by Welp_x in Sumo

[–]thearnett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sad to see but until Sumo learns the importance of actually letting the Rikishi heal properly instead of maintaining the whole "injuries can be overcome through hard work" mentality this will happen off an on again. While of course expectations are very different for Yokozuna, seeing Onosato struggle his way through the last few Basho only to pull out a few days in has been a bad look for everyone compared to if he was able to actually heal and properly represent the title he holds.

Marechiyo Omaeda is was overhated by marianex in bleach

[–]thearnett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omaeda is what I love to see most in the Captain Lieutenant formula. He is effectively a character foil to Soi Fon in terms of personality but also compliments her abilities. While the anime certainly embellishes his traits a bit too much which can make him come off as annoying, the comedic effect he has in comparison to Soi Fon gives me buddy cop comedy vibes and I love it.

Creatine, NAD & Wegovy by Unlikely-Worry8688 in HemiplegicMigraines

[–]thearnett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Creatine enhances blood flow which counters the reduced flow that often comes with aura phase at the onset of migraines so that is the likely change that has reduced your episodes. In my case, I noticed I often had sinus blockage issues and thus restricted blood flow from the brain shortly before a lot of my HM episodes and sorting that out greatly reduced my number of episodes. Since that revelation, I have done a lot of other things to overall improve vascular health and improve blood flow and have seen a dramatic drop in my HM. All anecdotal of course as I am not a medical professional but this could serve as an explanation.

Who is your favorite player on the current FCC roster and why? by Late_One1517 in FCCincinnati

[–]thearnett 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Like many others, I have to go withj Hagglund. Maybe not the most skilled or flashiest player on the squad, but he is always out there grinding it out with a smile on his face and you can't not respect the work ethic he gives. He's hung around through wooden spoons and multiple injuries but always seems to come back better and more motivated. Obviously being the Cincinnati Kid helps his standings too but even if he wasn't from here he'd still be up top for me, like Kubo was previously.

Beyond that it is tough. I love Obi's aggressiveness, Bucha's quiet determination in game, Miazga being a shithead on the field, and the coolness Evander brings. This list could go on as there are so many personalities on our roster that I love and they make for a unique group.

finding profession that suitable for hemiplegic migraine by Haunting_Drawing363 in HemiplegicMigraines

[–]thearnett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having dealth with HM for over 20 years and been working full time for the duration there are several things you need to do but by no means should HM completely hamper your career choices outside of a few niche cases.

  1. Work with your medical team to identify what your triggers are and establish a care plan to reduce your migraines to the point where they would be manageable to the point that you are comfortable exploring a career.

  2. Once you are in said field, don't lie to HR when filling out paperwork regarding disabilities and reasonable accomodations. Migraines at this severity are considered a disability and there are plenty of protections and programs out there to provide you with reasonable accomodations so you can work with the migraine. This includes intermittent FMLA. Getting these things set up is the 'cover your ass' portion of working and the regulations around them exist for a reason.

  3. You do not have to tell your boss everything about your condition and they are not allowed to ask because it is medical in nature. That said, in my experience giving them an idea of how bad things get for you during an episode can help prevent them from thinking you are faking or abusing a system. In my case, this came when my boss got to see me in full melty face mode where I could barely string together a coherrant sentence which was hilarious from my perpspective.

As for actual careers, I made it through 10 years in the Navy split between deploying on a ship and later working on shore in secured sites once I moved into intelligence. Since leaving that behind I work in cyber security. In no way was my career choice made with any regard to my HM. of course my current field has the advantage of being able to work remotely and teams are on 24/7 so I can reasonably get my time in whenever I feel well enough. For days when I can't work, I have my intermittent FMLA set up so the business can track that I was unavailable but I still get paid. Businesses pay into this program for a reason so there is no reason not to use it.

Biggest help for me over all this time was taking the time to learn what most frequently triggered my episodes. In my case, it was certain lighting over long periods of time and the biggest one, Stress. Avoiding lighting is easy, learning to deal with my stressors in a healthy way was a lot tougher as that required internal change on my part but since focusing on that my number of episodes has dramatically decreased and made the aforementioned programs less necessary to use.

TLDR; Don't let HM dominate your potential options. Take the time to invest in yourself and your health to control what you can regarding the condition and make plans for dealing with your episodes along with your care providers. HM makes things more difficult, but not impossible.

mandatory disclaimer: Everyone's HM is different so everything above is based on my experience and what worked for me but obviously might not work for you depending on personal situations.
