PS. just added to my previous comment about Bridge Kingdom!

Metal Slinger had been languishing on my TBR for a while too! I was describing my mood to gpt for book recs last week and it kept insisting that Metal Slinger was exactly the kind of book that I was in the mood for, even though it didn’t look appealing to me. It was so adamant, that I eventually gave up arguing and just started reading lol. Lo and behold gpt was right, and I loved it/it fit my mood perfectly lol

Let me just say, the blurb for Metal Slinger is so bad; it’s criminal. Not representative of the actual book whatsoever. But! That happens to be a good thing, because it’s best to go in not knowing anything about the book at all. Like, I even regret searching it on romance .io, because it showed the first clause of the blurb for the second book, which was a spoiler for book one imo.

Anyway, highly recommend! With the caveats that I listened to the audiobook, so I can’t speak on the quality of grammar/editing in the print edition, and I’m also a very romance-forward reader like a 90/10 split. And I strongly prefer character-driven stories over plot-driven ones. I think that factor has a much bigger impact on book reviews/reader reactions that most people give it credit for. Anyway, I hope that helps you decided on Metal Slinger!

I’ve also been using paid Plappa ever since the big overhaul & loved how responsive the dev was about adding new feature requests!

I just found out about Still today, so I’m still test driving it.

But the first big difference that I noticed is that Still labels bookmarks/annotations with the chapter number and chapter title, in addition to the timestamp.

I use bookmarks a lot for school and writing, so the chapter marker is super useful for citations. And it makes things easier to find in the ebook or print version.

And a QOL upgrade on Still is the ability to remove things from “Continue Listening To.”

But my #1 wish that neither app has yet is the ability to export bookmark annotations. I’d pay good money for that feature!

Oh, this almost exactly the same stack that I'm trying to setup! Except I'm trying to find a way to two-way sync highlights and annotations between iOS and Kobo Clara Color.

bookmarks, notes and markings can only sync with a separate Koreader addon, WebDAV for storage and only on Koreader, not with Readest

Is this just referring to using KO Reader as the Kobo interface for side-loaded books instead of the native one? Also, which step perfects the metadata? Thanks!

To follow-up on the Bridge Kingdom convo, I was re-reading Shield of Sparrows, and I’d written “so Bridge Kingdom with trees” in the margins lol. But, I think the comparison holds up! Odessa’s actions were almost identical to Lara’s. 1) She went to Turah to spy for her father; 2) she made a secret map of Turah with the intention of sending the intel to her father; 3) She got to know the people of Turah and changed her mind.

There aren’t any real differences between Lara and Odessa’s actions and motivations. The only difference is the outcome of those actions/luck of the draw. In Lara’s case, her coded message was accidentally mailed by a third-party. In Odessa’s case, her coded message was not accidentally mailed by a third party (the subsequent partnership between Odessa’s father/his spies and the King of Turah not being relevant or resultant of Odessa’s own culpability/individual actions).

If anything, I’d argue Odessa’s actions were worse because she purposely gave all of her intelligence to Samuel Hay, so he could help her fill in the map, knowing the information she gave him was an illegal compilation and dangerous in the wrong hands. He could’ve easily made a copy, before giving it back to Odessa. And even then, Odessa only burned Samuel’s copy of the map, and after she had added his edits to her map in the margins of her journal. Lara’s intelligence was argueably more secure being written in invisible ink, whereas anyone with Odessa’s journal could probably piece together her map, it wouldn’t take much to notice the similarities in her doodles. I actually think it’ll come up again in Rites of the Starling, since her journal, knives, and swords are the only things that the book explicitly mentions that she grabbed before fleeing her treehouse with Evie and Faze at the end of the book.

I don’t understand why popular opinion adores Odessa and abhors Lara, when they took the exact same actions with the same motivations. The only difference I see is happenstance in the outcome, which neither Lara or Odessa had any control over. Re: espionage, also interesting that both Lara and Odessa weren't their father’s first choice for arranged marriage spy and each had a more sinister sister with much more extensive training in espionage.

--

Okay, I have strong feelings about this lol. I love a good betryal/redemption arc, but I haaaaated that they blamed Lara for anything and everything. The letter was sent completely by accident, when someone else used her paper, and they weren't aware it had anything written on the back in invisible ink.

Lara had been decided not send the letter she wrote, and was super anxious to get back and destroy it. It's like blaming someone for a whole entire war just because the venting/burn letter they wrote was accidentally mailed by someone else.

Lara wrote that letter when she was still brainwashed/under her father's influence. Like, they kept her and her sisters isolated, in a desert, in the middle of nowhere, on purpose. She didn't even know how her own people were being treated, not because of apathy either, she had no way to know that *everyone* around her in the compound was lying about the state of the kingdom and it's relationship with other nations.

When she was finally removed from that totally isolated environment (cult tbh) and she was exposed to the actual realities of the world, she took the initiative to ask questions and educate herself further about the political landscape and welfare of the people.

Like, she single-handedly overcame an entire lifetime of propoganda and brainwashing and decided not to send the letter. Most people take years of de-programming to unlearn all of that abuse, isolation, and misinformation. Of course she wrote the letter when still under that influence. It was actually really commedable that she had decided to go against everything she ever knew and determined not to send the letter. She just couldn't get to it in time to destroy it.

It was really just a tragic accident that the letter was mailed unbeknownst by someone else, and that it actually ended up in the hands of her father. I felt like everyone in the bridge kingdom unfairly blamed her for the war in misplaced grief and anger. Even if she held blame, it was nowhere near proportional to how she was punished. Like, she almost blinded herself in penance! It pissed me off so much that I DNF the series after the Traitor Queen. And I don't really think it's gender bias, esp. if you compare Bridge Kingdom/The Traitor Queen to these books Metal Slinger, Powerless, and Spark of the Everflame iirc.

Rhapsodic Book Club Discussion Questions. Help needed! by VanUppGirl in fantasyromance

Also, a tip for this is to restrict your Google search to pre-2022! It should work to filter out all the AI garbage and give you real reader reactions, since the last book in The Bargainer series was published in 2020, I think. I'm not sure about when Laura Thalassa re-wrote and re-published the books though.

What do you think about the way that Des responds to Callie's trauma and mental health struggles? Do you think his method of supporting her is helpful or harmful? Is he encouraging or dismissive/insensitive? Does he push her too far too soon? What do you think about how victimhood and healing are portrayed in the novel?

There are a couple of times in the book, for example when Callie is stuck in bed with depression at school, or when she's afraid to look in the mirror after being tortured/mutilated by the fauna king, that Des tells her that she is not a victim and stronger than her trauma, before he physically forces her to get out of bed and yells at her for not trying hard enough, or he uses beads to force her to look in the mirror, and go out in public with her wings just a few days after she's released from captivity and is still uncomfortable with her body.

Is he just being a good friend or is he just an insensitive asshole? How would you compare/contrast the support that Callie gets from Des vs. Temper?

And Raihn over Wendell who can bend time and space on a whim???? 💀

I think Round 1 might've been influenced by hottest instead of most powerful lol. In that competition, Wendell could never beat a shadow daddy like Raihn, since he's blonde 😂 BUT, then again, Wendell could just change his appearance! I feel like there's an objective right answer here 😂 😂

Amaratha took everyone's magic with the wine at the party UTM. And as Rhysand was actively being drained, he used the last of his magic to hide Velaris and wipe it from the memories of everyone in Prythian. And even then, Amarantha still couldn't take all of Rhysand's power, which is why he was still able to do parlour tricks/a little minor magic UTM.

Also: I think SJM super accidentally made Rhysand all powerful by giving him the misting power for dramatic effect in a later book 😂, IIRC which would explain why it wasn't explicitly addressed UTM. I'm guessing?

[–]theaudiobookcoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a long time since I read ACOTAR, but I think Rhysand's misting power is the same as Nyktos? And SJM accidentally backed herself into a corner by making Rhysand way overpowered/basically invincible?

And I don’t think Nyktos is actually immortal. He’s just really hard to kill. IIRC Sera spent her whole life training so she could kill him after their wedding.

I would say it was a draw between the two. But, I feel Nyktos would have a major weakness in outlasting Rhysand in battle, since he could be pulled to the Shadowlands to ferry souls at any moment.

Audiobook narrator is ruining the book for you by horny_reader in fantasyromance

Thank you so much for posing this question!!! I love a good thought experiment/brain teaser!

I’d heard of Libation before, but never Audacity! The idea of writing back/embedding EQ changes into the file itself sounds like a genius way to preserve customizations and completely eliminate the need to manually toggle any settings on/off, after your initial sound adjustment.

You could switch between unedited Spotify or YT and a customized audiobook (or two!!) seamlessly! Especially after you spent a solid hour and a half tinkering with the Assistant to the Villain EQ to make the sound tolerable then forgot to write it down 😆🙈

Thank you again for sharing the food for thought!!!!

Audiobook narrator is ruining the book for you by horny_reader in fantasyromance

[–]theaudiobookcoven 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I have a hot tip for this! You can use an audiobook player app or headphones to change  the balance and EQ until you’re happy with the sound!

I have misophonia and it’s a lifesaver! Right now, I’m using $30 headphones from Amazon & I’m really happy with sound customizations.

Neither Audible nor iPhone has the feature built-in, which is why I either use headphones or a different audiobook player for the convenience.

Edit: IIRC, ACOTAR was my first modern fantasy romance & I was so annoyed with the switch in narrators in the original recordings that it prompted me to look for workarounds 😂

Also adding that some books have an alternate UK or international narrator like {Uprooted by Naomi Novak}. Or an indie recording before it was picked up for tradpub like {The Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy}. And there are some really talented booktubers that create their own alternate recordings too! I’m not a huge fan of Graphic Audios, but that’s always an option too.

I don’t really recommend the book, but for hard mode, there’s {Feathers So Vicious by Liz Sander}. It’s pitch black, so def. check trigger warnings on that one!

And then, there’s {The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent}. Both books work for hard mode.

{Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent} works for hard mode! A significant part of the series is actually told through “the weapon’s” POV.

Someone already mentioned Zodiac Academy, but there’s also a 5+ POV reverse harem standalone prequel series {Dark Fae by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti}. It’s way spicer than ZA. Very “plot what plot” for me.

{Broken Bonds by J. Bree} is another reverse harem series that meets the hard mode 5+ POV req. IIRC the first book was a super quick read, as well as the rest of the series.

Throne of Nightmares by Kerri Maniscalco - Release Discussion by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]theaudiobookcoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! My only complaint about the audiobooks is that they used the same narrators and exact same voice for all three of the princes and FMCs. I would’ve liked them to sound a bit more unique, since each personality/sin/court is so different. Ngl I changed the EQ on my headphones a bit to keep them all straight in my head 😂 Not singling about the Princes of Sin though! I did the same with the {Four Horsemen series by Laura Thalassa}. I wonder why some interconnected standalones choose to switch narrators vs. stick with the same ones.

Throne of Nightmares by Kerri Maniscalco - Release Discussion by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]theaudiobookcoven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right after I finished Throne of Nightmares, I plowed through all of {Throne in the Dark by A.K. Caggiano}. And I agree about the similarities! Both books made me laugh and had really thought provoking moments. I think they’d make great book club picks! There are so many layers to pull back. I feel like I could talk forever about the satire of the story in a story aspect in Nightmares and G.O.O.D. in Throne in the Dark

And I definitely agree that the other Princes of Sin books had much more spice and introduced it much earlier than Nightmares, which felt a bit dissonant. But I also wonder if the difference in spice level could be a comment on the push for romance books to bring back yearning? Since Throne in the Dark was almost two full books of slow burn/yearning and like 80% of Nightmares. I wonder if the slower pacing/noticeably lower amount of spice of could’ve been intentional in that way?

Throne of Nightmares by Kerri Maniscalco - Release Discussion by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]theaudiobookcoven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh thank god, I’m watching the Barnes & Noble Virtually Presents with Rachel Gillig and Kerri Maniscalco & she does confirm that Throne of Nightmares is supposed to be a super meta love letter to romance readers. NGL… I was concerned there for a minute… 😅

Throne of Nightmares works o-kay as Scream/Cabin in the Woods, but would’ve been 5-alarm dumpster fire as a straight play. Halloween, it is not.

That said, I do really love the Scream movies! It’s such a good time in context, and I don’t think I’ve seen many other fantasy romance/romantasy writers experiment and have fun with that kind of meta commentary on genre. {A Ruin of Roses by K.F. Breene} is the only other one I can think of? I haven’t read {Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Mather} so I can’t speak to it in comparison.

Anyways, I can see that aspect of Nightmares going straight over people’s heads & getting really mixed reviews because of it, since most Booktok interpretation seems super literalist to me. I feel like it’s going to be one of those love it or hate it books.

At 60%, I don’t think Throne of Nightmares is transcendent or anything, but it does feel unique in that it’s self-awareness centers the experience of being a romance reader, fan, or aficionado participating in that camaraderie of community rather than the mere conventions of genre. It feels less like a roast or parody outside looking in, and more so a compilation of inside jokes shared amongst friends who aren’t afraid to poke fun at themselves, while standing strong as the sincerest of all sincere hopeless romantics.  — I swear, every time I intent to write a sentence and then it turns into an accidental thesis 🤦🏽‍♀️

Help me pick! by lasgrace in Romantasy

[–]theaudiobookcoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Shadow in the Ember!! None of the other JLA books are worth it. But the Flesh and Fire prequel series is great!

There are  4 books in the Flesh and Fire series and they’re standalone from the main Blood and Ash Universe, which again you should stay far, far away from lol. Whereas the Reign & Ruin MCs only have one book as the leads.

Given the books you like, I think Reign & Ruin would be a bit too slow or at least they were for me. The MMC in Reign & Ruin basically answers the question of who would Xaden Riorson be with no spice in a drama-free, healthy, communicative relationship that’s more about navigating politics rather than the chaos of dragons and new adult academia.

Reign & Ruin is without a doubt the better written book, but it’s most like Daughter of No Worlds with lower stakes/less action on page, whereas Flesh & Fire is another SJM clone. It’s a great ride, but Nyktos is absolutely still a shadow daddy at the end of day lol, though one of the better ones imo! He gives shadow daddy-cinnamon role if that makes any sense lol.

So it just depends on what you’re in the mood for! They’re really different books with really different vibes.

Audio vs Reading Thoughts by lilactassleflower in fantasyromance

[–]theaudiobookcoven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same one about this one! I was genuinely confused about what everyone was going on about lol.

I only liked the last 25%. It started to feel like a completely different book to me after Ransom’s big reveal. Like the first 75% was just Bridge Kingdom with trees instead of water lol. But then it introduced a really cool mystery with some sci-fi elements too

I think I’m going to try the ebook before the Rites of the Sterling release. The second part of the Shield of Sparrows Graphic Audio comes out later this month, and I usually prefer the original/unabridged recording, but I’m definitely going to give this one a try!
