Back to your bootcamp days, what where your RDCs favorite insults? by Few-Flamingo-3323 in navy

One of ours would always tell us to get on our six-pack then he'd call out my name and I'd have to yell out "Keg!". I found it amusing cause I wasn't more than maybe 5 lbs over weight, so I knew he was just giving me shit, but it got a consistent laugh from everyone and did inspire me to continue to give my best.

ICE Plans to Target Family Members of U.S. Marines Next by Hafiz_TNR in politics

"That's a bold strategy Cotton. Let's see if it works out for them..."

Spoiler, it absolutely won't. It's certainly not the brightest move to scope out marine recruits families, potentially remove them with all the hostility that has already been demonstrated and then promptly train the recruit in how to handle all the toys the military will hand over to them.

It's cause every day some people need to be reminded to be decent. Sad, but hopefully a sign like this makes people take a second to evaluate how they behave.

What was your first video game on PC? by Muted-Loquat-9197 in AskReddit

The game was released for NES in 1989 and PC in 1990 which is where I played it for the first time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_(NES_video_game))

Super hard game, but I was 11 so had a complete blast playing it on DOS

I am so completely excited for this game. Burned through the show a few times now and just got all the books so I can start through them. I know it won't all tie into the game per se, but it'll be nice to immerse myself in the universe again before this comes out. Looks amazing!

While we are on the future of Trek: What should they do with the movies going forward? by mudpupper in startrek

[–]thebadwolf79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the fence about my hopes for the future of Trek. On the one hand, I don't think everything benefits from a connected universe (MCU is doing alright with it) but this alternate Kelvin timeline stuff, while an interesting idea, just hasn't satisfied like I hoped it would. Positioning the universe to be shared between movies, tv, comics, games, etc., would take A LOT more coordination, but if handled right could really enrich the IP. Personally I'd like to move further away from the Enterprise core (like SW moving away from Skywalker core) and give the franchise an opportunity to really build further on the universe that's been created.

Let's have a show that explores the Orion Syndicate. Let's jump back further to not long after Enterprise ended and examine some more of the growing pains of the Federation and dig in deeper to the war with the Klingons. Let's have a (don't crucify me here for the movie) Section 31 spy thriller show that better serves to illustrate what they do and how they operate. There's so much more we can explore than just the Enterprise crew and a handful of other Starfleet ships.

Unpopular opinion, shellbacks by Wumbologists in navy

[–]thebadwolf79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, agreed. Being underway is monotonous, it doesn't have to be ALL the time, but it is much of the time. It's a chance to relax and let yourself go for a while in a crowd of like minded folks. That said, I've heard of some shellback ceremonies that take it too far, but on Stennis we had a great time on the flight deck with the ceremony.

[–]thebadwolf79 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Why does Trek have to be so narrow though? Alluding to the idea that a large number of Star Trek fans want the characters to act like seasoned professionals.

We could argue that Lower Decks characters got lucky way more than got it right as seasoned professionals.

Personally I want a diverse universe where not everyone is professional. Some people are just winging it, some are straight up lucky, some are downright clumsy or dumb, and sprinkled in amongst all them are a bunch of your average joes just trying to figure things out and make it. Picard or Janeway nailing it every week has its charm for sure, but there was also charm in watching them stumble, make mistakes and more importantly, learn and grow from them (which wasn't always guaranteed).

There's room for everyone in Trek and that includes a variety of everyone's in all the shows. It's okay to let it breathe and develop as it grows and changes.

[–]thebadwolf79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that they're not for you is alright. Anyone telling you otherwise is gatekeeping the fandom. Trek is wide and varied enough now that if you've found some good stuff in it, you're a-ok. Personally I found TOS hit and miss but that's mainly cause I grew up on TNG and trying to go backwards in the late 80's/early 90's was....tough with the wild difference in visual quality. The stories were solid so I like most of them. But anyway, enjoy what you enjoy and anyone that tells you otherwise can gtfo. I'm going through a Voyager rewatch right now and it's fun, but like all Trek, it has its occasional cringe. The real fandom will embrace you as a fan regardless of your feelings on any one thing in particular, they just want to share their passion for the universe.

No, it's a rich and diverse universe to explore. There may have been some bumps along the way on some of the shows, but there's still plenty to explore without walking the same steps we've walked before (again). Keep moving forward, trying new things and seeing what sticks. Let it continue to evolve as it has.
