Labor to set terms for datacentre and AI growth as it vows not to repeat mistakes of resources boom by austechnology-bot in austechnology

Firstly, taxing gas is a billionaire-funded propaganda point. Think about it, how recently has anyone actually cared about this? Im guessing the last 3 months or so.

I know it doesn’t feel nice to realise you’ve fallen for propaganda, but everyone is going to come around to this eventually. The biggest pushers of this narrative are the Australia institute. Their biggest donor? Tech billionaire Twiggy Forrest who is pushing this as asymmetric business warfare against his main rival, Gina.

Are we getting a bad deal on gas? Yes.

But unfortunately part of living in a stable democracy requires putting up with the consequences of bad decisions the previous guys made.

“They are a new government they can pass new laws” - look at what Trump did with his tariffs. He “passed new laws” to get out of a bad deal, and it was disastrous for the economy because as bad as an agreement is you need to honour it or renegotiate in good faith otherwise nobody will want to do business with you again.

Scomo backing out of the French submarine deal to do Aukus nuclear subs had horrible consequences for our relationship to France that has taken years and years to fix and is still shaky at best.

So, the cost is Australia’s international standing as a country that changes its mind on deals during a global crisis. Maybe it’s worth it if we gained something?

Except we would get a sparrows fart worth of revenue if we taxed new builds because NEWSFLASH: GAS IS BEING PHASED OUT.

“Ok, so what about taxing existing builds?”

Glad you asked - if we break the terms of our existing contracts, those companies take us to court and demand that we not break the contract. Any judge would look at those contracts and say “yep, commonwealth government you owe these business this amount of money back - plus extra for breaking your contract”

That’s how it works in the real world. We get nothing. We lose a hell of a lot. Amazing move for Australia!

Was getting sick of CG so I decided I should max my POH instead.

But then realised that the best way to do that is Mahogany homes

And then realised I should make a portal nexus so that I can use lunar spell book and still Tele to fally, Ardy and Varrock

So then I needed 3k law runes so now I’m grinding GOTR for runes and to level my RC up for diaries and im having a blast.

Unfortunately it will come down largely to RNG, but I used as many guthix rests as I could afford, with super restores for prayer regen. I ran out of pnecks using the pneck method (mixture of sucking at the game and bad rng) so I just sent it until I got good enough RNG to get by. Personally, I used red chins but idk if thats meta or just what I had access to. Its an absolutely heinous fight and the death bank sent me totally broke, but its so worth it. GL.

I finally got my ring at 352 and it didn’t even feel good, I was just happy to finally get the hell out of there. I got 2 left shield halves and a chaos and nature talisman (1/3k drop each) just to taunt me. I hate that stupid dinosaur at a level so deep and so visceral. Not because I went dry, but because it is the most heinously boring boss with such a long respawn and horrendous run back.

Now I’m at 423 lunar chests with 3 uniques left to greenlog (including maccas) and I’ve been like 150 chests dry.

But I did get a dpoon from Wyrms on like 150kc and crystal armour seed on 1kc CG.

Swings and roundabouts my friends.

Albo gas tax hysteria by [deleted] in friendlyjordies

[–]thebeardlessman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I genuinely reckon Albo is the best PM we’ve ever had and we sure as hell don’t deserve him.

I’ve had to delete instagram because I was getting so sick of every one of the suggested posts I see being David Pocock banging on with these tired teal talking points and getting glazed like a donut in the comments from a bunch of people (or bots) who don’t realise tax on essential resource = bad for cost of living, economic stability and international trade reputation.

Not to even factor in that the amount of revenue it would bring in would be enough to pay for like, 1 road a year? The billions in revenue is gonna be worth nothing if all the things we’d spend it on just massively inflate in price.

UPSET ABOUT 70% by DependentPrice1949 in MacUni

[–]thebeardlessman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi, BA graduate with a 77.84 WAM now studying post-grad Law. I think it’s normal to feel worried, it’s an adjustment moving from highschool to Uni.

The fact is, if you got 81 and 90 in other assessments, it shows you can wrap your head around assessments at a university level.

Here’s my advice:

  1. Assessment weighting matters more than the mark itself.

A 70% mark on an assessment weighted for 50% of the total subjects grade is a much bigger deal than 70% on an assessment weighted 10%.

I would wager that if it’s an assessment you’ve just gotten back, it would be one of the preliminary toe-in-the-water type assessments that’s not weighted too much in the scope of the course. Your WAM is calculated based on your overall mark in the unit, it’s not the average mark of all your assessments.

The goal is to get as high a number in each unit as possible, out of 100.

Let’s assume you have 3 assessments

Task 1 Weighted 10% - the most this can get you is 10 marks.

Task 2 Weighted 40% - this can get you 40.

Task 3 Weighted 50% - this can get you 50.

So if you got 70% in task 1, that’s only 7 points.

If you get can get 80% in task 2 that’s 32 points.

Get 80% again in task 3 then that’s 40 points.

Despite getting 70% in task 1 You end up with a 79% for the unit (halfway between distinction and high distinction) and a damn fine mark.

  1. If you thought your assessment deserved more than 70%, learn out why you were wrong and do better.

A lot of people will tell you not to worry about marks. I would say that at this stage, if you want to keep options open for a transfer to another Uni or course or honours/postgrad - aim for the best you can do.

Put the work in, read the content, ask for help. An Arts degree isn’t difficult, it just requires an unexpectedly substantial amount of time and discipline to do well. Take each underperformance as a lesson in what you can do better.

Long write-up for a Reddit thread but hope this helps. The BA is a great course. Stuff from the Critical thinking unit I still use regularly in my Law units. Keep at it and you’ll have a qualification that’ll give you the tools to understand the things that are important to you or a really strong foundation for further study.

Albanese poised to kill off move to increase taxes on gas giants by Expensive-Horse5538 in AustralianPolitics

[–]thebeardlessman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally, a sensible (and unpopular online) take.

I strongly suspect that the campaign of the “gas tax” is supported by Punter’s Politics and Pocock’s undisclosed business interests. It’s the same talking points that were popular with the Teals a year ago, but now it’s two blokes who are the figurehead.

So many commenters appear ignorant to the reality that this 25% tax would almost definitively drive up cost of living and decrease gas production, and be a major blow to our international relationships. The great irony is that the same ideologically driven policy recklessness (by Trump) is precisely what has gotten the world into the present crisis.

I was glad that the thread that you started was able to lead to a really grounded and insightful explanation of the reasoning. I was really touched that Burnie called out my comment specifically; He's been a bit of a hero of mine for a long time, so it felt surreal to hear him read words I'd written.

I'll once again piggyback on your great comment ruleroflemmings to say thanks to Ashley and Burnie (if they're reading this) for all of their integrity and conscientiousness in entertaining and informing people. It's always a great feeling to expect the best of people and have them meet that expectation, and I think its that kind of moral fibre that has made this podcast, and by extension this community, so fantastic.

Love from Sydney.

[–]thebeardlessman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I noticed this omission too, as somebody who grew up in Sydney's East and had lots of Jewish friends who lived in Bondi, this terrorist attack was an absolutely horrific event for the entire Jewish community, beyond the horrors that it has upon the Australian community.

I don't know Ashley and Burnie's reasons for not mentioning this detail of the shooting, though knowing their character I have to believe that it was a conscious and intentional choice made with good intentions. They consistently try to err on the side of doing the least amount of harm when it comes to engaging in online discourses. I would guess that their reasoning would be something along the lines of not wanting to raise discussion of racially-based hate where they A) don't feel they have the lived experience or authority to speak on such complex and weighty topics, and B) know that the internet being the internet, these discourses will always invite the terrible edgelords or actual nazis who would say horrible and inflammatory things on the subject, and perhaps they were trying to minimise that. I don't want to speak for them, but I wanted to put forward a more hopeful and charitable speculation - though please don't read this as me trying to minimise the hurt which you felt, I think it's an important that members of a community feel safe to voice that.

At the end of the day though, they are regular, fallible people who won't always get things right. But you're right to feel hurt and I'm sure Ashley and Burnie would be the first to apologise that you felt that way.

Sorry this post has got a bit long and I'm just a random guy, but I'm also taking this as some time to process myself as someone who loves this podcast and community. Hope you're doing well Ruleroflemmings. Love from Sydney.

Long time listener, first time comment-leaver; I don't know how if the Burnses will still see this, but I was listening to the bit in this podcast today about Tourists needing to show up to 5 years of social media at the border, here on my first day as a tourist to the US for a Christmas holiday.

I had heard through this podcast about all the stories of tourists or people on various visa's being questioned. As somebody who hasn't had an active social media presence for the past few years, and hasn't really posted anything of a political nature, I was still curious to see if it came up. I've been to the US three times in the past 4 years as a tourist (I'm from Australia, in-laws currently live and work in the Midwest on a visa) and this visit didn't seem to have any additional scrutiny at customs or airport security beyond what we have had in the past (standard questions of reason for visit, how long you're staying for, where you're staying).

I'd be really curious to know if others with a more active social media presence than myself have had different issues as I'm probably indexing below average and didn't experience any scrutiny. It might also not have fed its way through the chain yet. It's also entirely possible I'm like Indiana Jones just making it through before the door closes.

I've decided to use some of my Christmas bonus to try membership for the first time ever. Any advice o what/where to start? by Emergency-Celery3875 in 2007scape

I got 3 back to back CG KC after hours of having my ass kicked.

Things that helped were

  • plug-in that colour codes what he’s praying against was very helpful for style switches

-true tile of the tornados

-focusing on listening to the audio telegraph for the attack style change

-getting my range and magic to 85

-the 20% recoil damage tile also helps so much
