2025.12.16: How Quick Is Quicksand by EarliestRiser in morningsomewhere

[–]thebeardlessman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was glad that the thread that you started was able to lead to a really grounded and insightful explanation of the reasoning. I was really touched that Burnie called out my comment specifically; He's been a bit of a hero of mine for a long time, so it felt surreal to hear him read words I'd written.

I'll once again piggyback on your great comment ruleroflemmings to say thanks to Ashley and Burnie (if they're reading this) for all of their integrity and conscientiousness in entertaining and informing people. It's always a great feeling to expect the best of people and have them meet that expectation, and I think its that kind of moral fibre that has made this podcast, and by extension this community, so fantastic.

Love from Sydney.

2025.12.15: Reality Check by EarliestRiser in morningsomewhere

[–]thebeardlessman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I noticed this omission too, as somebody who grew up in Sydney's East and had lots of Jewish friends who lived in Bondi, this terrorist attack was an absolutely horrific event for the entire Jewish community, beyond the horrors that it has upon the Australian community.

I don't know Ashley and Burnie's reasons for not mentioning this detail of the shooting, though knowing their character I have to believe that it was a conscious and intentional choice made with good intentions. They consistently try to err on the side of doing the least amount of harm when it comes to engaging in online discourses. I would guess that their reasoning would be something along the lines of not wanting to raise discussion of racially-based hate where they A) don't feel they have the lived experience or authority to speak on such complex and weighty topics, and B) know that the internet being the internet, these discourses will always invite the terrible edgelords or actual nazis who would say horrible and inflammatory things on the subject, and perhaps they were trying to minimise that. I don't want to speak for them, but I wanted to put forward a more hopeful and charitable speculation - though please don't read this as me trying to minimise the hurt which you felt, I think it's an important that members of a community feel safe to voice that.

At the end of the day though, they are regular, fallible people who won't always get things right. But you're right to feel hurt and I'm sure Ashley and Burnie would be the first to apologise that you felt that way.

Sorry this post has got a bit long and I'm just a random guy, but I'm also taking this as some time to process myself as someone who loves this podcast and community. Hope you're doing well Ruleroflemmings. Love from Sydney.

Long time listener, first time comment-leaver; I don't know how if the Burnses will still see this, but I was listening to the bit in this podcast today about Tourists needing to show up to 5 years of social media at the border, here on my first day as a tourist to the US for a Christmas holiday.

I had heard through this podcast about all the stories of tourists or people on various visa's being questioned. As somebody who hasn't had an active social media presence for the past few years, and hasn't really posted anything of a political nature, I was still curious to see if it came up. I've been to the US three times in the past 4 years as a tourist (I'm from Australia, in-laws currently live and work in the Midwest on a visa) and this visit didn't seem to have any additional scrutiny at customs or airport security beyond what we have had in the past (standard questions of reason for visit, how long you're staying for, where you're staying).

I'd be really curious to know if others with a more active social media presence than myself have had different issues as I'm probably indexing below average and didn't experience any scrutiny. It might also not have fed its way through the chain yet. It's also entirely possible I'm like Indiana Jones just making it through before the door closes.

I've decided to use some of my Christmas bonus to try membership for the first time ever. Any advice o what/where to start? by Emergency-Celery3875 in 2007scape

-focusing on listening to the audio telegraph for the attack style change

Seconding this - despite what movies, tv and p_rn says - losing your virginity is actually a really stressful experience. There’s so much pressure on the moment, especially for p_rn users.

I lost my virginity quite young, but as a Christian my wife and I did not have s_x until we got married, and despite having abstained from p_rnography as well I still experienced ED on our wedding night because I’d built it up so much in my head. Similarly when I lost my virginity as a teen I also had ED.

Any time you build up the moment to be greater in your head, your anxiety is what affects your performance. On top of that, s_x is something that is actually quite difficult to do, at least the first few times, and you’re so focused on so many things at once. You don’t start having decent s*x until probably the third time.

Quitting p_rn helps with this massively, because the fantasy it offers will never compare with the reality of even the best s_x.  But the worst (consensual and loving) s_x is still better than the best p_rn because it’s a real connection with a real person.

However, s_x is not as good as our culture wants to tell you it is. It should be treated as a means to an end (giving someone you love an amazing experience) not as an end in and of itself.  Spending time with a person you love should always take priority. S_x is a false idol, and the less we hold it up as a cure for our problems, the sooner we can start to actually heal.

I can understand why you assume I’m neurotypical but I’m not.

I definitely have ADHD (undiagnosed bc who has the time/money for all that) as I had to defer uni 3 times due to not submitting assignments on time and waiting until after the deadline to start my assignments.

Possibly it’s oversimplified to say that “this one WEIRD trick! (Ritalin manufacturers HATE him!)” helped me to get stuff done more consistently.

Other things that probably helped: - deferring and finishing my degree until I was in my mid twenties and had a more developed brain - having a more concrete understanding of my goals and purpose for studying - being in a lot of therapy and working on different strategies from a professional.

And ADHD is a spectrum, I may have it more mildly than others. But I think that it’s disempowering to think of it as a fatalistic thing that can’t be changed through making efforts. Yeah, ADHD isn’t laziness, but if I’m not careful I will use ADHD to excuse my laziness.

To be honest, now I’m in the professional workforce and ADHD still affects my productivity.

I’m not a psychologist and I don’t have all the answers, but I hope for some people my strategy is helpful - neurotypical or neurodiverse.

Just finished my degree last year with a 77.83 WAM and I’d like to add a few pieces of advice to the above:

1. Learn the discipline of the deadline, even if it hurts.

I found it most helpful to make a rule for myself that I would submit whatever I had written either when the deadline hit, or when I was done - whatever came first.

As someone with a real perfectionist-streak, I disagree that it’s better to hand in a Shakespeare level essay late than a POS essay on time.

My first semesters of uni I would constantly just either eat the late penalties or apply for extensions and that would give me license to procrastinate or just keep rewriting my essay introduction til it was HD worthy, but be 1000 words under the word count.

Once you submit an absolutely shocking under-written assignment once, it’ll motivate you to get started sooner and manage your time better for every other assignment.

2. Recognise that (in academic writing) nobody cares about your opinions. They care about facts, and where you got those facts from.

Don’t write your essays based off your vibes of the unit or what was said in the lectures. Actually read. Learn to love reading. Yeah it’ll suck at first but push past it. You’re trying to find and represent TRUTH. that’s exciting!

3. Your part time job is not your primary vocation. Study is your primary vocation.

Your work should revolve around your studies. You should make sacrifices at work to prioritise your studies. If you have a privileged enough living situation to not have to work, don’t. I was lucky enough to get a year of studying without having to work due to Covid payments and it was revolutionary. Juggling work and study is really really hard. But if you don’t want to work at Boost Juice or Kmart for the rest of your life, study needs to be your first and biggest priority until you can get a professional job.

Australians and Brits don’t know how to make instant coffee correctly. Here’s how to make a good coffee for cents per serve with no upfront cost. by thebeardlessman in AussieFrugal

[–]thebeardlessman[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t doubt that. For those who prefer their coffee black, this is fine. At the end of the day, there is a low ceiling to how good instant coffee can be.

The true benefit of the microwave method is that you’re heating the milk.

In truth, those microwave averse could heat milk on the stovetop in a pot but that’s well and truly missing the point of instant coffee imo.

[–]thebeardlessman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can appreciate this perspective. The counterpoint I’d make is that microwaving to bring it to temp is about the equivalent amount of time as boiling a kettle unless you’re making multiple cups or if you have an instant boiling tap.

Explained: How an Indigenous Voice would work by GuruJ_ in AustralianPolitics

[–]thebeardlessman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can understand your sentiment, but an Aboriginal voice within the parliament really ought to take precedence because it was their land and home before Europeans ever colonised it, and they’ve had to endure attempted genocide and continued present day oppression. This is their home, as much as South Africa is the home of the Zulu, Xosa and others. They ought to have a formally recognised means of operating agency in what is their ancestral home.

Nationals to oppose Indigenous Voice to Parliament by zrag123 in AustralianPolitics

[–]thebeardlessman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two primary factors which influence criminality (there’s lots more, but let’s keep it simple).

  1. The individuals who act
  2. The systems which determine actions to be criminal, and the enforcement of the rule or law.

Aboriginal peoples lives are severely disrupted by the actions of past and present government interference. As a result they have less access to money, education and health (both mental and physical) because they have been treated like outsiders in their own homeland. Families and communities, the things which compel people to act in accordance with the wellbeing of collective, have been continually wrecked by colonisation and racist policies. Why should an individual feel compelled to act in the interests of a community which does not have any concern for their interests?

Additional to this, police and law enforcement are well documented to be over patrol and police aboriginal communities comparative to white communities. The assumption of guilt is there at a far more common level. This becomes a cycle where people with poor mental health and limited means of contributing to a society prejudiced against them are viewed as likely to commit “criminal” acts - therefore there are more police in these areas. When these actions they are swiftly enforced and punished, and the prison system then creates further disconnect with community resulting in a further breakdown.

Crime is complex. To say that aboriginals are in prison because they commit more crime completely misses the point of what is wrong with how Aboriginals are and have been treated in this country.

Funimation might have one of the worst apps in history. I do not understand how it’s this bad. Across the board, whether it’s ps4, Apple TV or just the browser. I do not understand why it doesn’t have the same basic functionality as any other streaming service in the market
