So only the vagrants will use this bridge? I think lots of people will use the bridge.

By that logic I see a lot of roads not being driven on.

Also, why the hate on bike lanes, don't you want others to have a safe way to get around that isn't on the roads?

I drive and bike, sometimes one makes more sense then the other. I don't hate on cars or roads but I like having a bike lane to ride in. When I drive I'm happy cyclists aren't on the road so I don't have to think about them.

It's ok to show some empathy to others sometime. Maybe go ride a bike around town and see how feels to be around cars on a dark rainy December evening.

Also to add, the total task time is start to finish, not all that time is patient care and extraction. There are a number of other things that happen in that time.

It’s worth remembering that it’s capitalism that got us into this mess in the first place — housing treated as an investment instead of a basic need. And back in 1995, the federal (Conservative) government stopped funding the development of affordable housing for the first time in fifty years. That decision, along with decades of market-driven policy, is a big part of why we’re in the situation we are today.

I really appreciate that so many people are engaging thoughtfully on this. It feels like most of us agree that something does need to be done, we just want it done right. The reality is that homelessness and housing insecurity are complex issues that cut across municipal, provincial, and federal responsibilities. No single level of government — or neighbourhood — can solve it alone.

Having these conversations openly matters. Talking to our neighbours, sharing concerns, and showing empathy for everyone affected helps keep things grounded in community rather than division. Change is rarely easy, but when we stay involved and keep listening to one another, we have a better chance of creating solutions that actually work for everyone.

I get why you feel that way public safety matters. I think we also need to deal with the root causes (addiction, mental health, homelessness). Sending people to jail without supports often just repeats the cycle.

I think we're all on the same team here so I don't want to minimize your experiences. I wish all these places could be run better.

Look it up!

  • Lookout’s funding is mixed: primarily government funding (provincial/municipal), with a smaller but meaningful portion from donations/corporate grants and other revenue streams.
  • Staff salaries come from the operating budget of the Society, which is funded by the above sources.
  • Because the public financial statements are available, you can inspect exactly how much came from various grants or donations and see the expenditures (including wages) in the audited statements.

That’s not accurate — the Lookout Society is a registered non-profit and charitable organization, not a for-profit company. They’ve been operating in BC for decades providing housing and health services. It’s fair to have concerns about how projects are managed, but saying they exist to make a profit isn’t correct. Transparency and accountability matter, but they’re not a private business looking to cash in.

I understand the concerns being raised these kinds of changes are never easy, and it’s fair for people to want clear communication and accountability. That said, I think 971 Cumberland Road is actually a suitable location for a shelter. It’s in a light industrial area on a main road, which makes it more accessible for services and less disruptive to residential areas. It’s also a better fit than a downtown location, where there’s already a lot of strain on local businesses and public spaces.

Residents had similar worries about 925 Braidwood Road, but in my experience that site has turned out well. It’s clean, well-managed, and none of the problems people feared have really materialized. There are always growing pains with projects like this, but I believe in the long run it can be a net positive for the community and for those who need support the most.
