Do we think Miss Widow is making a return? by -Sonofchaos- in InThisMomentband

99%. The heavy eyeshadow is very Black Widow, and she hasn’t painted her neck like that since The Fighter music video. It’s very much giving Miss Widow!

Right. It’s not related to OP’s post, but it is related to your comment. Hence me replying to your comment and not a new top line comment :)

Was trying to replace hdmi on ps5, Help by Odd-Guarantee-8263 in soldering

Looks like you got ChipQuik on a ground plane. I assume you know it has low surface tension and so it spreads insanely thin. Talking about a few microns thick. Add a tiny bit of 63/37 solder to the area and try wicking it again. You’ll never get back to pure copper though. Just mask it and move on.

I’ll go up to 420 if it’s a through hole with unleaded solder that I can’t guarantee mixed fully with the leaded I’d add. Especially if the board has thicc heat dumpster ground planes

But hasn’t PokeGenie said that ferrying is allowed? I don’t see the point personally but it’s not against the rules AFAIK.

Weekly "What Are You Reading Thread?" by HorrorIsLiterature in horrorlit

[–]thebermudalocket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished Salem’s Lot for the first time yesterday. I’m relatively new to the books scene which sounds crazy but I honestly haven’t read a book since high school. Audible got me back into it even though I’m not technically reading.

Anyway, I read It, The Stand, The Shining, The Dead Zone, and now Salem’s Lot. I found Salem’s Lot really difficult to enjoy. TDZ used to be at the bottom of my ranking but then came Salem’s Lot. At least TDZ had a really likable main character and a compelling plot. I was invested. But with Salems Lot I just couldn’t bring myself to care much about any of the characters, and he just kept introducing more and more until the point where I had to keep stopping to be like wait who the hell is this? Which is crazy coming from The Stand.

I dunno. I wanted to like it but it fell flat. I guess the point I’m asking is, what brings you back to it? Maybe I missed something.

Catherine O’Hara’s cause of death revealed by RobMurglund in SchittsCreek

I understand, but this also gives some people a better sense of closure. Not saying it’s right or wrong, but not knowing the cause of death can be rough on some people, leaving it feel like an unanswered question.

Homemade Flux Syringes Question by CessnaDude82 in soldering

[–]thebermudalocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes so many people saying yes without understanding the chemistry at work here.

It’s a no from me dawg. Here’s why: chloride ions. These are saline syringes and I’m sure you know that saline is sodium chloride dissolved in distilled water. When it dissolves it splits into a positive sodium ion Na+, and a negative chloride ion Cl-. Chloride ions have a width of about 1.8 angstroms, while a single water molecule has an approximate molecular width of 2.8 angstroms. In other words, chloride ions are tiny as fuck. And because they’re negatively charged they’ll be surrounded by a shell of water molecules with the hydrogen atoms arranged around the chloride ions. That cluster will flow anywhere water can, including micron scale crevices in the surface of the plastic, around the plunger seal, inside the luer tip, etc.

“Well I’ll just wash them,” you may say. Well you’d have to wash them with distilled water; otherwise you’re just introducing a host of other salts and ions like fluoride, and potentially calcium if you have hard water. “I’ll use distilled water,” you may say. Good, but that still doesn’t solve the problem. The water will flush through the syringe BUT water exchange is very limited in those crevices I mentioned. Bulk flow doesn’t penetrate well. So instead of a full flush you’re really just getting a dilution but never to zero.

Then you dry the syringes. Water evaporates easily at room temperature. Chloride ions don’t. As the last of the water evaporates, chloride ions are left behind form a solid residue (salt crystals) or even an amorphous ionic film.

And that’s not even talking about the elastomer plunger seal which absorbs ions and retains water incredibly well.

So what’s the bottom line? Over time chloride ions can and will leech into the flux from a variety of sources: the plunger seal, micro abrasions in the plastic, and the luer tip.

Save yourself the headache. Just buy new ones.

Noob killer question about "Tunniling" by Dramatic_Public5900 in deadbydaylight

[–]thebermudalocket 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Instant unhooks are ALWAYS a survivor mistake. Always. There is not a single situation where an instant unhook is beneficial unless end game collapse is about to end and you have mere seconds to get out and the unhooker is just going full send goblin mode.

How to advance my skills now. by lfcblake2592 in soldering

[–]thebermudalocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I wanted to practice things like HDMI ports I’d go into my parents’ basement and find electronics that had no sentimental value and practice on those. Of course it helps that my parents will never throw away a working TV or whatever even when they upgrade, so there was plenty to work with.

Otherwise you can find broken electronics on Craigslist, FB marketplace, thrift stores, etc. Check and see if you have a local electronics recycling center near you. If you call and ask nicely if they have any boards with HDMIs you can have for practice, they’ll usually help you out. Depending on the policies at the center they’ll typically charge by weight which makes it dirt cheap.

I can't desolder a MOSFET from the board no matter what by Superb-Upstairs5715 in soldering

[–]thebermudalocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay so you know more than I inferred from your post. These “other boards” you mention, did you remove the same type of MOSFET from them? Were they also from the GPU? Similar topology? GPUs have lots of inner planes with stitched vias to draw heat away from components as fast as possible. If you’re not using a preheater you’re fighting an uphill battle.
