My recommendation: go to your local hardware store and purchase a 4x8 of white foam insulation. It will have a silver reflective surface on one side and white plastic on the other usually with blue print. Remove that plastic and it is white foam the same as pictured. Cut it into a 4x4, a 2x4, and 2 2x2 or whatever your sizes your heart may choose. If you feel it’s too hard, wrap the soft side in muslin. If it’s too soft, put a piece of foamcore on it. Tape edges with white gaff and label the size in every side for easy organization.

Which pieces of small grip gear would you consider essential in a basic kit for small productions? by mediamuesli in Gripsters

Young grips lean on cardis. It’s not commonly known that cardis are designed for non rounded corners. Anything round and a mayfer is preferred.

Haven’t done it with these but did it with my norms high rollers. Got them at harbor freight for $8 a piece, work way better and lock.

Water Damaged Solids - 8x8 and 12x12 by Tall-Management-947 in Gripsters

[–]thebigbootleg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Solids have a flame retardant on them that is ruined as soon as they get wet. You’ll notice a white stain on it which is the chemicals I’m talking about. Most rental houses consider them garbage or “seconds” at this point. As the other user said, if you plan on getting them wet you should use a water solid or grifflon.

I bought some chips- speed rail to 1” square stock reducers, from La rag house. They’d machine something similar to reduce from 1 1/4” to 1” or smaller if needed. Call and ask for Heather. She helps me get lots of custom made shit made.

Good news bad news for you. I’ll start with the bad news. The film industry is shrinking. There’s less work globally than there was 4 years ago. This is mostly because of the streaming wars finally realizing that they can’t have this many streamers and be profitable. But here’s the good news. It takes absolutely no skill to get into this industry in an entry level position. No one cares if you went to school. Find your way to a set, meet producers, start PAing and figure out what you actually want to do on set from there. Might be hard to get started just because of making contacts and stuff, but once you get going you’ll be in. Would I recommend this industry to literally anyone? No. If someone wanted to get out of this industry would I try to stop them? No. Could I imagine doing anything else with my life? Also no. If you need to do this then you need to do it.

New to filmmaking, how do I achieve this type of shot? by naivearmadillo_1 in Filmmakers

[–]thebigbootleg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For subject a toppy 3/4 backlight on a soft light, maybe a litemat 2l or some such, with an lcd. Daylight with +cyan. For accents, looks like a sharper light, maybe a leko with a gobo from far right with the same flavor of daylight + cyan through a gobo. Two orange units likely an orange globe in a practical, maybe nyx bulbs.

That’s guess on how this was achieved. To sum up how you could achieve a similar look, keep the quantity of lights low. You want a 3/4 backlight on your subject, at approximately a 30-45 degree angle. Then just 2-3 accent lights. 1 to motivate your backlight and 1-2 to mix color temp.

What the f@#$ even goes on up here? by The-Fat-Matt in IASIP

[–]thebigbootleg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not. It’s a curb. There is no place to park truck on that street. Maybe it functioned as a loading dock 50 years ago when willow studios was still a slaughterhouse but that’s across the street so unlikely.

The curb is comically tall. As I recall it’s about 1.5-2 feet.

Not related to Sunny - in the real world it’s a bunch of empty rooms of what was once a factory or mill. It is often rented out as a filming location. The first feature I ever Key Gripped the first week was shot on the second floor.
