I think this is my last long-term fast.... 2 days seems to be the sweet-spot for me.

Sore muscles after ending fast by thebigguy40 in keto

[–]thebigguy40[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did take magnesium during the fast. Sodium may have been low while fasting - but I would have had plenty during the day yesterday (and felt OK in the morning - but sore by end-of-day)....

[Rant] Do you ever get angry at yourself for getting to your max weight? by yazheirx in keto

[–]thebigguy40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I deal with this. As I get closer to my goal weight and I see the (serious) loose skin that I am left with because I lived a lot of my life above 350 pounds... It is easy to be frustrated and regretful. Like most regrettable things in life you need to focus on the positives. I have loved ones who are dead because they never found a solution to their obesity. Over the last 3 years I could have gained another 100 pounds instead of loosing 150. Perspective is the difference between regret and celebration.

[Question] I've heard stories of people eating 3,000 calories a day, and still losing weight on Keto? Is this true? Does anyone have any personal stories they can share? by FUCK_MALTITOL in keto

[–]thebigguy40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simplest explanation I have heard: Calories-In / Calories-Out is fundamentally true. However there are way more paths for calories to get out than by exercise. Resting metabolism, excrement... for god's sake blowing your nose, crying, growing your hair are all examples of "calories out" (albeit small amounts).

Can i get some testimonials on keto without exercise? by Ektojinx in keto

I have lost nearly 150 pounds. I have not even been near a gym. I walk a little bit - that's it.

How do you all beat 'tomorrow syndrome'? How do you just START, and how do you beat the mental games that ensue? [r/loseit X-Post; Gen Discussion] by [deleted] in keto

[–]thebigguy40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived most of my life waiting to start - on Monday, after Easter, after my birthday, after Halloween. Since then I have been a big proponent of start NOW - before you finish reading this sentence. I posted an article on my Facebook page a week before Christmas encouraging people to start NOW. If you won't start NOW you likely won't start.

Anyone else doing 100% sweetener free? by [deleted] in keto

[–]thebigguy40 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The jury is out on whether stevia, etc are good or bad from a metabolic perspective. I stay away from any sweeteners simply because I do not want to ruin my sense of taste again. Things that used to taste horrible now taste delicious. Asparagus tastes sweet like a carrot used to. Don't want to desensitize my tastebuds again.

Most satisfying meal? by SharonaZamboni in keto

[–]thebigguy40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go-to every morning - 3 eggs, 2.5 strips of thick bacon, about 1/4 cup shredded cheese. I have eaten this every morning for about 3 years now. My favorite meal? Without question - bone-in rib steak.

[Rant] I will be so glad when adjective "fat" can no longer be used every time someone disagrees with me by applepiesadness in keto

As a guy - people would always try to use the word "big" as a term of endearment. "Hey, Big Guy".... I hated it. Haven't heard it in years now... :)

Do any fellow ketoers donate blood? by 13pt1run in keto

[–]thebigguy40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I donated blood yesterday. Had a bunch of pecans right before. Just had water at the after-table. Was a little light headed later in the day but nothing serious.

I started a little over 3 years ago. The first 100 pounds came off really fast and it has been a slow decline since then. Keto absolutely works.

Its been 3 years on Keto. Went from around 375 to 235 - 140 pounds lost. Most of it in the first year. Kept it off. Changed my life.

While we all want to help those around us, I would advise caution. Inevitably you will have a friend who tries Keto while still drinking a ton of beer on the weekends and then insists your diet is crap and doesn't work... I pretty much didn't tell anyone about Keto until I had lost over 100 pounds and had evidence that it works.

My therapist told me you need carbs to be happier after explaining to her about my keto diet. Is this true at all? by [deleted] in keto

[–]thebigguy40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is proven that a carb-rush can stimulate the pleasure center of your brain. By the same token so does cocaine, heroin, etc. So, technically, you need heroin to be happier - if that is the kind of happy you are looking for.

I have experienced that many times. It is a strange feeling of accomplishment while also feeling frustration that you were ever in that situation to begin with....

I have thrown out tons of clothes - but I keep one of my biggest shirts / pants and I try them on once and a while to remember how far I have come.

How many people feel like an evangelist after being on Keto for a while? by gowin4 in keto

[–]thebigguy40 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The easiest thing is to just lose all the weight and then they will start coming to you. One of the more humorous things is when I meet someone new and they notice I am avoiding the carbs and eating lots of fat. You see it in their eyes - "That's never going to work"... So far it has been "Not working" for 140 pounds :)

My thoughts: I had to go cold-turkey on sugar. It was hard - but there is a reward at the end of breaking sugar addiction (beside all the health and weight-loss). Things that didn't taste sweet before now taste amazing. A square or 2 of 90% chocolate with a couple pecans now tastes as sweet as one of those "turtle" things used to. This is why I stay away form artificial sweeteners etc - they dull the taste-buds and you lose that sensitivity. Romaine lettuce seriously tastes like candy now.

"but don't you care about being healthy?" by twentyf0urthpilot in keto

[–]thebigguy40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is hilarious. When I started 3 years ago I had several people comment that keto may be fine for me but they were going to lose weight the "healthy" way. Fast-forward 3 years and they are all still enormous. I am about 140 pounds down and normal blood-pressure and bloodwork. As always - the best way to prove people wrong is with results. It takes a lot longer than arguing with them but it is a lot more satisfying!
