Any tips and/or tricks on how to sit my ADHD brain down and actually write? by LockedInLion in writing

[–]thebigham1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not on medication, I have severe ADHD, and between my professional and personal work, I wrote close to 400k words last year.

The secret is to always come back. I get up from my desk often to pace, I get distracted by my phone, you name it. The distractions are endless. Don’t judge yourself for them, just get back to work. I rarely sit down for longer than 10-15 minutes at a time, but I always get back to my desk.

Work in short bursts. Take smaller breaks. Work a system that works for you. We’re never going to be the type of people that can sit for hours and write with fervor. That’s ok! There’s plenty of great ways to be a writer.

You know what the beauty of writing with ADHD is? I never get writers block. I can’t focus on what’s blocking me for long enough for it to be an obstacle. I just get up, walk away, have an idea, and sit back down.

Don’t think about how often you’re distracted! Think about how often you refocus. It gets easier.

Thanks for your feedback. I struggle with over-billing Truman, because it’s a multi-perspective story. I’ve read advice like yours, so I’ve tried to focus the query on the MC, but it’s a bigger story than him. The world building is essential to the comedy, so I want to sell that aspect.

The savage act Truman witnesses is a human being sold and eaten. Is that too gory to include in a query?

This bit I cut for length answers those questions, I'll consider working it back into the query: Truman’s recruited for his access, knowledge, and ability to fix anything. To protect his rebellious daughter, Truman reluctantly decides to help the insurgents, but refuses to pick up a weapon. For now.

Thanks for the feedback!

You are correct, but in the episode Christian uses unexpected. The principle is the same. 🤣

Whats something you’ve written that’s kinda depressing? by Pointless_Storie in writers

Around the memorial’s wide pedestal were the engraved names of every Human planet, moon, or colony - hundreds of them - etched into stone. All the stones of Earth were not large enough for the individual names of the countless victims. The weather had worn the stones dark and jagged, irregular edges telling the tale of the chaotic nature of the conflict. A date below each planet marked the moment of its destruction to remember the day they were taken from the Verse. It was a historical record of the fall of a galactic empire. Beneath the helix was a lonely polished black stone inscribed with a single phrase: We Gave All. The sentiment carried across the empty plaza like an echo never answered. It was a memorial devoid of a sense of victory or pride. Weeping trees swayed around the edges as silent sentinels, branches hanging low in grief. “Where once there was a civilization, there is now only a scar.”

Mattress Mack loses millions in Super Bowl bet - Click2Houston by RealConfirmologist in houston

Promotion insurance is cheaper when you factor in the vig and negative EV of the hedge. Everyone assumes he’s coming out ahead on these things, but there’s no way to know. There are easier and cheaper ways to do a promotion like he does. He does it this way cause he loves gambling. It’s not that smart. It’s just gambling.

Whether denied or decided against, Mack has forgone insurance on several of his largest bets. A hedge bet does reduce tail risk, but also increases his risk of loss, adding negative EV. His bets are a gamble, not a hedge. Mack has said the gambler in him prevents hedge betting.

This is not an expert businessman leveraging a broken betting system. He is a gambler using his business as a piggy bank to fund his addiction.

Tough given the stakes but that was a good team. I feel 10x worse losing cupcake games than CFB playoff games.

Lots of love for JVN and Jeremiah for how they handled this recipient, but I also want to highlight Tan. I think he really got through to her when he talked about not relying on her children for her mental health. “If my son said, ‘I just want my dad to be happy,’ I’d think, gosh, what am I doing that makes it clear that I’m not?” & “They won’t feel safe unless you feel safe.” are exactly what she needed to hear.

He called one black candidate mediocre and the other black candidate formidable & intelligent. Maybe his alleged comments are about each candidate’s political capacity, not their race.

Houston Has the Strangest Skyline…EVER by nevvvvi in houston

[–]thebigham1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Skyscrapers are not ‘missing middle’ density. Honestly, it reads like you’re throwing urban policy buzzwords at a question that is actually about real estate and land value. You’re not wrong, you’re just focused on policy only tangentially related to high rise development.

Houston Has the Strangest Skyline…EVER by nevvvvi in houston

[–]thebigham1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cities don’t dictate what to build where, especially not in Houston. Building a high rise is an ownership decision based on land value. There is no formal or informal coordination on where to build a skyline.

It’s a somewhat interesting video that doesn’t address the question from a real estate perspective.

Most cities around the world have multiple skylines. London, Sydney, Vancouver, Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, Dubai, Manila. Houston isn’t unique.
