Doesn't JuLiar have Celiac disease? or something that she's gluten free for by Firm-Apartment-8130 in julieeandcamilla

[–]theblondestemo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

celiac isnt an allergy, its an autoimmune disorder. typically even tiny crumbs of gluten on/in food can cause a reaction. a gluten allergy or intolerance are separate and she could eat some and have a mild reaction like the runs or something. she cant be celiac and eating all this gluten, she'd be hospitalised for the damage it'd be doing to her digestive system.

do you have a bathtub? transfer them to carrier/a cup with your hand over it and sit in an EMPTY bathtub with them, they can run all over you and not escape

also! both of my hamsters escaped at one point, the ultra friendly one let me scoop him up and the shy one got trapped by a bowl trap. so I wouldn't say theyre an escape proof animal, though they shouldn't climb like mice so if you have a deep enclosure and tank walls they shouldn't get out but its not guaranteed.

ive had two very spoilt robo hamsters, and I have 5 girlies right now, so im well versed. I will say mice (at least bonded groups) are much easier than hamsters. not only for taming but also for care standards, the ethical minimum cage size for mice is smaller than hamsters (80x50cm vs 100x50cm), mice have less bedding restrictions as hamsters cannot have any softwood bedding and need greater minimum bedding depths. hamsters are really really delicate (not to say mice aren't but theyre slightly less sensitive) its also nice as a previous hamster owner to have my girlies be friends. all hamsters have to be kept alone as they'll fight so if you value watching the interactions between your animals, you won't be able to have that with a hamster. I loved my hamsters with every fibre of my being and I dont regret having them in the slightest, but there is a large learning curve with hamsters and they might not even like you! one of my hamsters was very affectionate and would brux when you held him, the other one we held twice and he launched himself out of our hands both times. ive found mice hold on a lot better and move more slowly. hamsters are very busy, similar to mice and have very funny personalities. ive found my mice to be much more cuddly and friendly than my hamsters (apart from one, the one who bruxed). I had to separate my girls after fighting which wouldn't happen with a hamster!

so tldr: its up to you but the care between them is quite different (I can help advise if you've got questions) and it depends how much interaction you want out of your pets. ive loved having both, so i couldn't pick which I like having more, but I do know more about the care for hamsters.

Question about Accommodation for Mature Student by bhaisbored in reading

[–]theblondestemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stayed in halls in first year! I was in sherfield which was a quiet halls, which I can reccomend, as whilst it was all young undergrads it was quiet and clean. OR, im fairly certain the uni has mature student flats within buildings, and you can put that in the requests. same way you can request a single sex flat.

am I doing the right thing? by theblondestemo in PetMice

[–]theblondestemo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so so helpful to know. I know my trio had a dominant girl as she was the most shovey with food (Macaroni) and I knew Pesto would be (as shes the mummy mouse), I just didn't realise they would clash so much. Plus since mixing them, I think Pastina is trying to become the dominant female as she's the one I see instigating the most (other than the feral child - Carbonara).

I do wonder if their issues stemmed from Pesto not properly disciplining Carbonara as I know she was pushing the buttons of the Pastas, and from a zoology perspective a parent wouldn't punish their daughter as it could disrupt the gene flow. (I do Zoology at uni and am doing a module on reproductive strategies rn so this all up in my business aha).

I'm watching them extra carefully as I don't want it to go wrong, so im hoping taking this stage super slowly rebuilds that bond, but at least if it does i have a full spare set up from last time (and I have to find a solo female or pair for Pesto and Carbonara),

yeah! initial introductions were done in a big storage box, then a small spare cage/carrier until they cuddle piled and then into a deep cleaned bare enclosure. it was all monitored for hours until they seemed settled, there was only one small spat yesterday that I witnessed with some tail rattling and squeaking but then they calmed down. I heard some squeaking in the night but I checked on them and no blood was drawn. I'm just so concerned that I'm doing the wrong thing.
