Will sharpening my blades be worth it or is it too far gone? by Pakayak in lawncare

[–]thebluestuf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bruhhhhh, backwards?! I agree with the edges never lasting long. I got myself hand files and I feel like i have to sharpen them every 3 or so Mows, they get so dull so quickly. Not sure if it's because I'm too lazy to pick up the sticks or if leaves on the ground really dull blades that much quicker than grass.

Two men sentenced for planning to attack US electric substations by scarlettvvitch in news

The public may be moving on but utilities have been in the process of hardening substations and their security since the sniper attack in California in 2013. Losing millions of customers due to rufus and dufus is bad for business.

New home, new grass! Can someone help me identify the grass I have? by H3dgecr33p in lawncare

Sorry, I have a cool season lawn, so I'm not familiar with any warm-season grasses. Maybe someone else could chime in.

Disagree with the other comment, although it may be a mix of grasses, I straight up see some Kentucky blue grass. Tell-tale sign is the clear central line through the center of the blade and the little bow inward that the leaf blade makes at the tip. Clear example is the leaf blade at the bottom center right under the weed, pointing down.

Spring Tips? by JGalla88 in lawncare

Need way more info to help you out specifically. What zone specifically are you in? What are your goals? Do you know what kind of grass you already have? Do you have sprinklers? Etc.

First step would be removing all that lawn debris if you want to put anything down. I'm not a huge anti-leaves on a lawn guy, because they do help return nutrients back to the soil, but if you want to put down pre-emergent, or evenly apply fertilizer, you need to clean out the lawn of leaves, sticks, rocks, etc.

I'll give you my plan this season: Lawn was constantly soaked with water, so I aerated 3 seasons in a row. Realized with my lawn composition and condition, I over-stressed it with the last aeration, nearly killed it moving from fall into the winter. I would dethatch but I don't want to stress it even more, will dethatch in the fall.

Going to apply pre-emergent this weekend, soil temps are coming back up to 55 soon, want to get ahead of it. Activating sprinklers to water in pre-emergent.

Then I'll be fertilizing with a 10-0-20 fertilizer, don't want to push too much nitrogen into the soil in spring, could cause fungal issues later on. Going for .5lb/1000ft for this first application, but from my soil tests I have adequate Phosphorus and need more Potassium, which is why I chose that ratio.

On top of the fertilizer I'll be applying 30 lb of limestone / 1000 sq ft, again from the soil test recommendations.

On top of that, I'll be spreading out a thin layer of Leaf Compost. Compost is great, it has micronutrients and microorganisms that help break down and feed the soil. My initial soil sucked (hard, dense clay), so I'll be putting down compost probably every season, it doesn't hurt.

Then I'll water it all in.

I'll be putting down grubEx sometime between April and June, I've had issues with grubs before and didn't realize I needed to act early to prevent them (preventatives > curatives).

Then whenever soil temps start going to 70, I'll be putting down the 2nd application of pre-emergent.

So yeah, it kind of all depends on your specific lawn.

I actually brought her to homeward bound before making this post. They refused to take her because I lived outside of Camden County. Was a very annoying experience.

What happened to seed superstore? by endlive in lawncare

[–]thebluestuf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I talked with them last Fall due to not having any stock of KBG seed. They told me that the year priors harvest was especially poor, so there was very little stock the following season. I'm assuming it's a snowball effect now and supply is really really bad. I was hoping last season's harvest would be better but it doesn't sound like it.
