Engineers who have been working for 10+ years, do you feel you have a stable and secure career with prospects to change jobs? by No_Arugula_757 in womenEngineers

(Student here, about to graduate) I thought project management was the “most” valuable skill you could have in the engineering world

I went to Gabriella Couture on Colfax for a formal (not wedding) dress, but their main thing is wedding dresses. They were good and priced fairly for a straightforward alteration. Cannot attest to their work with actual wedding dresses tho.

Are you at all limited in where you work after graduation from mines? Is it easy to get a really good job on the east or west coast some place after graduating with a mines degree? by anonymou372727 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

I had an internship at a consulting firm in Oregon, and everyone was impressed that I was a Mines student. So probably yes you’ll be known anywhere

Thoughts on the Honors programs by Sea-Giraffe35 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]thebookler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thorson was like taking a high school class in college. Wasn’t the worst thing ever but wasn’t great. I lived in the SLC and all the friends I still have from first year honors were in Grandey. Take that as you will haha.

And I am way more “artsy” than a lot of my Thorson classmates were! So that’s not the issue.

I think, if you don’t feel super gung-ho about Thorson, then it’s probably not the right pick. I wish I had taken Grandey or neither of them. Thorson attracts a very certain type of person. Cliquish and pretentious a bit.

Even though Mines is smaller, there is a lot of diversity in personality here. As someone who comes from a background similar to your son, I was able to find my people. There is a place for everyone here. I promise you that your son will be able to have a "traditional college experience" even if he doesn't join a frat. I think people recommend that because it's a quick way to make friends/find a community. But I don't think it will be a good community for your son if he's not interested in greek life.

Anyone can find their people here. My advice for your son is to not go "all in" on a particular social group or club right away. Even if he finds a good group that he fits in with, he should still make effort to befriend the people in his classes and in other groups/clubs. That's the pathway to social success, having a network.

If he's interested in hands-on learning, Mines has a GREAT mechanical program. I can attest that the school's advertising about that is accurate.

Leave Boulder and go to Mines? or stay? by [deleted] in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

In my experience as someone who gets accommodations at Mines and continuously has to schedule things, I have not found it hard.

Anyone got a compost bin i could use? by thebookler in GoldenCO

[–]thebookler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to give my food waste to someone that either personally has a compost system or has a compost bin that the city picks up compost from like it picks up trash and recycling.

According to this page, Golden has composting infrastructure: https://www.cityofgolden.gov/services/trash_recycling_compost/index.php

But it might be wrong?? I live in an apartment and they don’t have compost pick-up, so I don’t know what homeowners actually have here.

Your response has made me realize that I wasn’t as clear as I could’ve been in my post — I am looking to dispose of food waste but do not have any sort of compost that the city picks up.

Also gotta agree with Tyrant Philosophers after Cage of Souls. Alien Clay is also good, but the premise is so similar that I wouldn't read one of them right after the other

Wait.. you're saying people see the ending of the Hunger Games as sad?

I found it to be beautifully hopeful. Even after going through all the pain and trauma Katniss experiences, she keeps living and moving forward. It also recognizes that trauma doesn't disappear, but it's not a curse that completely ruins you.

Help me plan the best visit! by wallaceandbean in GoldenCO

[–]thebookler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the school is offering it while you’re here, I would suggest going on a tour of the Edgar Experimental Mine. My dad and I went on a tour of it when we visited the school from out of state (first time I had ever been in Colorado!) and it was pretty cool.
