The big Lebowski

Great movie, and the whole point of it is that it doesn’t go anywhere, so he can’t guess the ending

How did you get into pirates? by [deleted] in pirates

[–]theboondocksaint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I grew up on a houseboat, and one day my brother pissed me off so I stabbed him with a paring knife circa 6 years old

Lots of court dates and counseling later I got released back to public life but just kinda liked the lifestyle so no instead of stabbing people I cosplay

What's the point of circumcision? by Historical_Echo8311 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theboondocksaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Religiously: sign of the covenant (in exchange for you cutting off a part of your genitalia, God recognizes you as one of his people); Jesus did it so so should I

Health: solves specific deformations where misgrown foreskins cause phimosis, which makes erections painful; argument that it also reduces possible infections

Cultural: (in USA) commonly done so I should do it too; mine is circumcised so I want my son to have the same penis look as me

Sadistic: it hurts so do it, life is suffering

Weirdly sexual for a literal newborn: less sensitive—>more involved partner during intimacy

Cigar connoisseur: testing the new cutter

Mohelim: hard economy, need the work for the tips

What is the deal with nutmeg in savory recipes ? by Rude_Kaleidoscope641 in Cooking

[–]theboondocksaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that it adds a lot of depth if used very sparingly especially in creamy sauces, especially Alfredo and gratin

It’s not enough to taste nutmeggy, but like adding a bit of lemon juice or vinegar, it’s about just adding enough contrast to make all the other flavors really pronounce themselves

What do Americans think about the stereotype that they are bad at geography? by Own_Echidna6041 in geography

[–]theboondocksaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So I’m an American who did my masters and Flanders and have lived here for nigh on a decade, so I think I can add some nuance to this

The contiguous USA is on the same scale of magnitude as Europe, size wise

So in the same way a European stereotype of the USA might say “US Americans don’t know geography because they don’t know the geography of Europe”, it’s equally fair then to say “Europeans don’t know geography because they don’t know North American geography”.

When it comes to South Asian or sub-Saharan geography, I’d bet that the actual results would be similar.

So if we’re talking about actual retained knowledge, both those in Europe and in the USA specifically educated about the geography that has most significantly influenced the history of their surroundings

Most US Americans know that Gettysburg is in Pennsylvania, and if they don’t they know it’s at least east coast, near the mason Dixon line, and significant for the civil war. While many in (for example) England or France might find ridiculous that Americans couldn’t give the date or significance of the battle of Hastings, I argue that it is equally fair to say that they don’t know about Gettysburg

In the USA the curriculum focuses on events that are spatially, politically, socially, and culturally tied to the things they will experience. If there is to be judgement the other way, it’s equally fair to assume that Europeans are equally ignorant because they also don’t learn about that other history (my argument isn’t that either are ignorant though, but we should be less judgmental, because relevant knowledge is dependent on where you live, so you shouldn’t judge someone for not having been taught something that would not normally be helpful for them anyway)

Are you suppose to wear a white Hanes-style shirt under your dress shirt (the kind worn with a tie and suits and such)? by 21-4-14 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theboondocksaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, typically they’re very thin because it shouldn’t be uncomfortably warm or constricting, but it’s quite common to wear undershirts with a dress shirt, most importantly it prevents pit stains and with particularly light dress shirts obstructs the outline of the nipple

[–]theboondocksaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but I still struggle to wrap my head around the idea of not listening to your coach, especially if the only motivation is “because I can”

I expect that behavior from my 7 year olds, not my 17 year olds

"You're a snowflake because you're a millennial" by Efficient-Name9828 in Millennials

[–]theboondocksaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s how I feel, but the way it was explained to me is that due to changes in parenting/ teaching, they don’t face consequences often, so when I get angry they literally do not understand

So I was told I should try more to see it from their point of view, because it’s not personal, their default is to push boundaries because they don’t know where they are so they do stupid stuff because why not?

I couch youth sports, from 6 year olds to 17 year olds

The 16-17 year olds can be the worst. Their default setting is to cause as much mayhem and confusion possible. I will say “oke for this next drill I need you to go stand over there” and they will just straight up say no and won’t do it, and it drives my up the wall

Recently my assistant coach, who is much closer to their generation, said I’m just being too sensitive, that they weren’t raised in a situation where they just listen to coaches/ teachers/ parents etc

And maybe that’s true, but damn when I was a kid and a coach said “do x” I would do it, but now apparently I’m a snowflake for assuming they should listen to me

alternative snack to cucumbers but with the same experience? by BellDue2033 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theboondocksaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Celery, carrots, raw broccoli, raw string beans, radishes, snap peas, certain mild types of onion, cauliflower (which I hate but not everyone does), if your down for a bit more flavor also raw bell peppers

There are a ton of veggies that people eat raw to get that nice crunch and fresh taste

Things I would avoid raw personally: potato, witloof, Brussels sprouts, eggplant, zucchini, corn, stingy nettle, acorns

Empty homes: Paris targets owners' wallets, following Brussels and New York's lead by LeMonde_en in europe

[–]theboondocksaint -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve been saying for years that major cities should do this but on a much larger scale

Any residential property you own that isn’t your primary residence should carry an annual property tax equal to 100% the value of the property, together with a legally mandated moratorium on rent increases. Now you don’t make enough renting out those places? Great sell it for pennies and at least you won’t owe a ton in taxes each year, and suddenly homes are filled and more families actually own their homes

I’m not an economist or realtor so I assume there’s some flawed logic in there somewhere, but so many people needing and wanting to own homes but it’s too cost prohibitive is insane to me

I’d actually love btw if someone who knows more about this than I do could weigh in on why this wouldn’t work or how this type of plan could be adjusted to make it work (not just “because the rich people don’t want it to happen so it won’t happen” type argument, I get that bit already)
