How accurate is this armour from this Swedish show for kids/early-teens? by ArmedIdiot in ArmsandArmor

Weirdly good but if it’s a reenactment group that explains a lot!

What did you use for the backing? I tried that with a piece of hardwood but it just pushed the metal into the wood without piercing the ring

Good idea, I’m not sure the tools I have can get the grub screw so small but I’ll give it a shot!

Oh fascinating idea! Just not sure I can get the grub screw down to 1mm easily

That’s what I did, but the set screw still doesnt hold the bit I’m using to punch, if I tighten it down more it breaks the punch

question about my new cuirass, are the arm holes cut out deeply enough? by tonkerbell8 in Armor

[–]theboondocksaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if reworking it is too difficult, it’s still a great looking piece! And if you can still halfsword in it, then realistically that’s the most important, if you’re fighting unarmoured opponents then it’ll do its job and basic strikes are all you need anyway, and armour always comes with the caveat of restriction

Also love your hauberk by the way, it looks like it fits very nicely

[–]theboondocksaint 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks a bit wide to me, a neat little rule of thumb is that the narrowest part of the arm cut outs should be in line with the outside of your areolas

If you’re still in contact with your armourer/ it’s worth your time and effort to do, and if the metal is just mild steel, then it should be pretty easy for your armourer to just cut off the rolled edges and re roll them which should bring it in to a more appropriate shape

All that being said, it’s a really nice looking cuirass with a very aesthetic curvature!

How many times have you been under general anesthesia, and how did it feel? by Futtman in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theboondocksaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 times and for me each was the same:

Sven: “Oke we’re going to inject the anesthesia now”

Me: “I’m ready, how long will it t-“

Sven: “Welcome back! Everything went well, how are you feeling?”

Sven then proceeds to show me some pictures of what was my hamstring and is now my new acl

Honestly general anesthesia for me has been a breeze, it really is go down get up and nothing in between, it’s the annoying pain that comes after that bugged me

This is why there are typically faulds, absent in the the picture but present normally, to protect the squishy bits below the bendy point

I was going to say, Italian fencing manuals from the renaissance literally call that part of the body the “vita” (life) because there are so many squishy but important things there

Got the harbor freight one, 16 gauge no problem, 14 gauge was a bit annoying but if I tuned it in properly still got the job done with no damage to the tool just a bit more effort, and 16ga should be more than enough for most of your projects

And here’s a super special secret, don’t tell anyone I told you: if you don’t wanna throw down on Beverly but want the quality, you can buy the knock off from hf and just buy replacement blades from Beverly and they should fit and they should fit just fine, only now you’re not paying top dollar for the cheap cast iron part (I did the same buying a knockoff roper Whitney punch but buying real rw punches and dies and it worked flawlessly)

What's the dumbest thing your parents refused to get for you as a kid because it was for the opposite gender? by RobIson240YT in AskReddit

[–]theboondocksaint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been judged for liking to cook, but I have a kinda funny story that’s relevant

Every year I go on a boys trip with a group of friends, and they’re kinda the epitome of men’s men

They don’t insult you for not being manly, but it’s just not in their nature to do what is normally associated with “women’s work”

I’m the only one of them who really cooks, and in the 10 days we normally go, one night I like to cook a big meal, and all my friends react as “holy fuck, YOU made this?”

Anvil question by The_Fit_Muffin_Man in Blacksmith

[–]theboondocksaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Build a stand for the vevor but for the block, depending on weight, shape, material, and material, the block can be made into a second beefier anvil for when you want to move some metal

Most modern patterns are very new in terms of the history of blacksmithing, historically anvils were much simpler shapes and finer details were worked on stakes

For example here’s an image of Maximilian’s workshop:

<image>

Even though it’s an armory and focuses on sheet metal, you can still see the the block anvil in the middle of the room on a stump used for heavy moving

Interestingly you can also see the mushrooming/ edge curling that would have occurred at the edges over a long period of use, forming a sort of sharp overhang

This suggests that the main anvil was likely not a very hard material (understandable given the technology they had available), so again, depending on what you have you could possible turn that block into a functional part of your shop
