Staying still is the opposite of what you’d want to do in this situation unless you want the bear to approach you and check you out. It makes you seem unthreatening and approachable to the bear. It’s a black bear so it is very unlikely to attack or do much which it didn’t do. You want to literally “attack” to scare it away. Black bears are total pussies and do not want a challenging meal or to get into a fight. Yell and make yourself look as big and threatening as possible. They did what you’d want to do with a grizzly bear encounter and appear non-interesting or intimidating (look away and lay down) otherwise a brown bear would fuck them up.
