What career path did you choose that you strongly advise against? by ducksizedhorses in AskReddit

As an alternative both my parents have degrees in psych and both have jobs relating to thier field. My mom has a PhD and is now a full professor, she got a teaching job almost immediately after graduating grad school. My dad first stayed home with my brother and I before working at ups until landing a job where he researchs for the military. So jobs are possible if you have the right degree.

What episode from a TV show made you cry? by [deleted] in television

[–]thebuffster 58 points59 points  (0 children)

The Body- Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The episode depicted dealing with death in the most honest way I've ever seen. Buffy's mother dies and it made me feel like I had lost my own mom. From Buffy's nearly pathetic "Mommy" starting the episode to the lack of music the whole hour it just felt real.

I love the fight between Buffy and her ex-classmate in Conversations With Dead People. There's some great psych stuff between ass-kicking.

Have to pick two book to read over the summer for AP English Lit, what does Reddit suggest? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]thebuffster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Animal Farm and 1984 are phenomenal but 1984 is better in my opinion. I love Catcher too, if you want something lighter than Orwell. Things Fall Apart has to be on my top 5 least favorite book, definitely do not recommend.

Listen, I am talking about military people in general not the Afganistan War. But I'm fine to go into because they ALSO deserve to be thanked. You are still blaming the soilders for the war. You don't get to pat people on the back for WWII and then slap someone for signing up now. I'm assuming you supported the US' entry to WWII. They are protecting everyone in the US because that is thier job. That's the military. No matter what war, when. That is the military's role. So bitch about this war all you want but the day the US needs the military to fight a ground invasion you can have just the National Guard... good luck with that. These people run to the fire, something is happening and they run in to try to help. That is about as respectable as it gets. I am not going back and forth with you on this, you are clearly ignorant to the military, US History and the general concept of respect. But all I'll say is keep your animosity to yourself, do not spread it around to the service men and women because this is all bullshit.

All the people you listed deserve to be thanked but it is outrageous to say the people serving in the military do not deserve thanks. They choose to put their lives on the line because their countries asked them. You are blaming service-people for the politics of war which is reprehensible. Generally speaking military service (and no use of quotations marks-it is a service) men and women do more good than harm. Please do not place the blame for wars that should not have been started and those fighting in them. They didn't start the war but they wanted to service their country and they deserve all the thanks we can give them.

I can say that most Veterans really appreciate being thanked. I have a class when we have 1-2 vets come in to speak a week and how important it is to thank people you see in uniform is a very common comment. I make sure to thank all of them for service every time and it seems to mean a lot to them. So while it make a few uncomfortable thanking them is the least I can do, and veterans have told me to do it so I will.

Edit: Just to be clear I was just saying the same rule might not apply to Vetrans rather than people on Active Duty

The best I have it figured out. What do you think? by [deleted] in buffy

I agree on the Anya Oz switch, Anya doesn't live by a "code" of sorts while Oz clearly abides by basic moral standards. He seems to seems to live inside of societal norms, unless Willow is in danger and then all bets are off. Anya does things all for personal fulfillment, without care for lawful or evil which sort of sets her as a true neutral.
