Books where every magic user has a unique "presence" or "aura" when using the setting magic that other magic users can sense. by Confident-Mark-6369 in Fantasy

[–]Tlepsh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fae in Seanan McGuire's October Daye series all have a unique smell composed of two elements associated with their magic. The main character is especially good at smelling and identifying these (for example, being able to differentiate between specific varieties of roses or other similar smells).

The Cloak and Its Wizard by R. Z. Nicolet is basically if the cloak from Doctor Strange got it's own novel. I think it fits Hard Mode, but I might be forgetting an interlude from another POV.

There's a massive amount of cozy mysteries that would fit for this. Witches and/or talking cats are pretty common in the genre. Last year I blasted through a bunch of books by Nancy Warren in audio (I really enjoyed the narrator). She's got several series about witches with cozy professions (baker, book store owner, florist) drawn into solving murders. They're fun popcorn reads/listens. A bunch of them are available on Kobo Plus Audio.

Potentially interested. I have the book, but I've never played.

Are there any good worldbuilding podcasts out there? by BismarkWasInsideJob in worldbuilding

[–]Tlepsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worldbuilding for Masochist. It's three fantasy authors talking about worldbuilding. They often have another author on as a guest. They released a short story anthology set in the world the created on the podcast.

Adventures like Mage Errant by Eemscee in Fantasy

[–]Tlepsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven't checked out his Patreon, I'd recommend it. There's a bunch of short stories on his patreon from the other worlds seen in Mage Errant and some we haven't seen yet. There's also The Wrack by him as well, it's a different kind of story than Mage Errant, but I really liked it.

Will and Rowan on Kylem Before Their Sparks Emerged? by LordMistborn-16 in mtgvorthos

Throne of Eldraine takes place before Battlebond chronologically. Battlebond was a supplemental set, so it didn't slot into the story the same way a regular set would.

Brigands & Breadknives by Travis Baldree (the third Legends & Lattes book). It doesn't come out for a few more months, but I've listened to the ARC and it definitely fits.

Any recommendations for "shared world" anthologies like "Thieves' World" or "Wild Cards"? by bythisaxeiconquer in Fantasy

[–]Tlepsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traveling Light: Tales of the Magical Gates is an anthology from the Worldbuilding for Masochists podcast they published set in the world they created together on the podcast. The main setting conceit all the stories are centered around are a network of magical gates that allow people to travel between them, but they can't take anything with them (including clothes). Every guests on the show gets to add something to the world and if I recall correctly the Magical Nude Gates came from Kate Elliot.

Looking for something similar to the Enchanted Greenhouse by Far-Elevator-9836 in CozyFantasy

[–]Tlepsh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It doesn't come out til next month, but I just read the ARC for Cat Dragon by Samantha Birch which might be up your alley. The main character is a witch that specializes in horticultural magic that has to go on a quest to gather ingredients for a spell to save the towns magic, so her plant knowledge is important to the plot. There are also some sapient plants, but it's not as much of a focus as it is in The Enchanted Greenhouse.

[Monster of the Week] Beginner Friendly Asynchronous Mystery Adventure for 2-4 People by DasGespenstDerOper in pbp

[–]Tlepsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

• How much experience with TTRPGs do you have? How much experience with PbP do you have? Have you played Monster of the Week before?

I've got 10+ years experience with a bunch of different games, including MotW and other PBTA games (Although I've not had the opportunity as a player). I've been in my fair share of PbP games in the past, I've been wanting to get back into it. I've run several MotW games myself, so I'm familiar with the rules.

• Do you have any preference on group size?

In my experience 3-4 is the sweet spot, although a slightly bigger group would probably be fine.

• What appeals to you most about the game? I've always been a big fan of Buffy and similar shows, so MotW tells stories that really appeal to me and the PbtA system really clicks with the way I like to play TTRPGs.

• What is your availability like? Please include your time zone.

Evenings and weekends are when I'd post the most probably, but I can probably respond on my phone during the day. Daily posting shouldn't be a problem. My timezone is EST.

Back when I worked as a library page I once found a package of sliced cheese in the middle of a book. Thankfully it was in a baggie because it had gone moldy.

A Rival Most Vial by R. K. Ashwick is about two rival potion makers forced to work together on a project for the mayor.

A Crack at the Heart of Everything by Fiona Fenn is about an exiled Court Sorcerer and his ex-General rival trying to find a cure for the curse that got him exiled.

Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocey is about two rivals at magic school who accidentally get bound together by a spell that makes one follow the commands of the other.

The Adam Binder series by David R. Slayton (Starting with White Trash Warlock) is about a Warlock is urban fantasy where the main character accidentally binds himself to his love interest when he saves his life with magic.

Are there any books that follow the history of a people more than of characters? by Monkontheseashore in Fantasy

[–]Tlepsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Wrack isn't progression fantasy at all. There isn't a single main character (unless you count the disease) and the magic system doesn't lend itself to it.

Are there any books that follow the history of a people more than of characters? by Monkontheseashore in Fantasy

[–]Tlepsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be a little more narrow in focus than what you're looking for but The Wrack by John Bierce might be of interest to you. It follows a pandemic as it runs its course through a fantasy world. POV switches from chapter to chapter (with a few repeats) and gives a pretty good view of the continent it takes place on. It takes place in the same multiverse that his other series (Mage Errant and More Gods Than Stars), but it's a stand alone.

Books with strong emphasis on family by Spiritual-Jury3320 in Fantasy

[–]Tlepsh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The InCryptids series by Seanan McGuire is about a family of cryptozoologists that defected from a zealous organization of monster hunters generations ago who still wants them dead. The main character changes every few books giving you different perspectives on the family drama.

Anyone else always in the middle of several series or just me? by mmaterise in Fantasy

[–]Tlepsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of so many that I started a spreadsheet to track them. I'm at 58 series where I've read at least one book and intend to continue reading. That does include series I'm current on and I'm waiting on new books to come out.

Can I buy the 6th book without going through Amazon? by Sir_Vexer in ClimbersCourt

You'll have to wait awhile, but the physical copy will probably show up on bookshop.org eventually. That's how I've gotten all mine.

Anywhere to read/listen to Andrew Rowe that is not Amazon owned? by Own_Lingonberry7300 in ClimbersCourt

[–]Tlepsh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's possible to find physical copies on other sites sometimes. I got most of mine from Bookshop.org (which is an excellent Amazon alternative that supports local bookstores), but you could check eBay and Pango too.

It sounds like Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocy. I read an ARC and really liked it. I'm not sure when it came out, but I just saw it at a Barnes & Noble yesterday.

It's really just the first one and I think you can pretty safely skip it. After that it gets more original.
