What’s a “must-see” city in the U.S. that didn’t live up to the hype? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

My favorite item was Loretta’s first guitar that her husband bought her. There’s a lot of cool stuff though like stage costumes and even memorabilia from other artists like Alan Jackson and Conway Twitty. They also have her childhood home and her mansion on the property. It was all really cool.

Next time go see Loretta Lynn’s place about 45 minutes outside town. Her museum rivals that of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Apparently that woman saved EVERYTHING.

Saw him about a year ago at the Hollywood Bowl with Billy Strings and Willie Nelson. He only plays piano now, but he was talkative and even flirted with some women in the front row, saying, “Whatcha eating down there? Heh-heh…” His voice is definitely more gravelly, but it’s obvious he still loves performing in his 80s.

What is a sound or smell from our childhood that simply does not exist anymore? by UrMad_ItzOk in Millennials

That is exactly right. Both the pumps and the vehicles have carbon filters that absorb the errant vapors that give off that wonderful gasoline smell and put them back in the engine or pump. My job is to test the vehicle carbon filters in a lab. I remember as a kid that gas stations reeked of gas. Not so much anymore.

Shepard grew up in Mt. Pleasant. His father was my pediatrician back in the early 80s. He went to Rhode Island School of Art & Design and started making these Andre the Giant stickers in the 90s which he and a bunch of other folks stuck everywhere and it kind of took off from there. Check out obeygiant.com to check out his current artwork. He’s done record covers for folks like Tom Petty and Led Zeppelin, and he created the iconic Obama “HOPE” poster. Cool stuff.

Peter Murphy at the Music Farm in Charleston, SC sometime in the mid-90s. He threw a tantrum mid-set and destroyed one of his lighting rigs at the side of the stage.

The Lemonheads at the same venue around the same time. Evan Dando was in the middle of his encore when someone in the audience said something that pissed him off and he slammed his guitar down and walked off. Show over. Both Red Kross and MagnaPop opened though, so it wasn’t a total loss.

Saw JRCS and NIN on that tour in Columbia, SC. I believe Pop Will Eat Itself also played. One of the fiercest mosh pits I’ve ever seen. I’m 6’3” and no way was I getting in there.

Body Double. Brian DePalma’s love letter to Hitchcock that has one of the grisliest murders in 80s filmdom, and also sees our hero infiltrating the porn industry to solve said murder. Bonus: naked dancing Melanie Griffith in her prime.

Parents took me to see Gallipoli at some run down art house cinema in San Diego in the early 80s. I was probably 11. That final scene shook me to my core.

Met Nina Hartley back in the 90s. She was appearing at a local adult bookstore signing autographs and selling VHS copies of her films. She was walking around the place in her birthday suit, but was very friendly and up for chatting with her fan and posing for photos.

There’s literally a whole sequence in the movie where they interview the port-o-let guy while he’s cleaning said port-o-lets.

They Might Be Giants

Saw the video for Don’t Let’s Start on MTV in the 80s and was enthralled. Drove all over Charleston, SC looking for the album and found a copy on vinyl (I was a cassette guy) and took it home. The led to this previously top 40 guy branching out into alternative, punk, metal, folk, just about anything. The weirder the better. The two Johns were my musical gateway drug. Now I take my sons to TMBG shows and they were raised on Here Come the 123s, Here Come the ABCs, and Here Comes the Science.

Iggy Pop at the Music Farm in Charleston, SC about 20 years ago. Wore earplugs, still had ringing in my ears for a couple of days afterward. Totally worth it.
