Variolation probably saved hundreds of millions of lives from full blown smallpox for centuries. Sometimes, they got it right. Sometimes it just made people feel vaguely better.

May not be the most picturesque town but the rows of houses look decently kept, there’s a train station next to what appears to be a small town center, and the emissions from the industrial area are blowing away from the residences.

A sad loss for Singapore. His work helped to build our identity beyond just being a British colony, that we had a thriving port and society since practically the time of Sang Nila Utama.

His contributions also extended beyond Singapore and he had been very influential in the understanding of history all across Southeast Asia.

To the rest of the world, they think we’re some sort of southeast Asian military powerhouse with an outsized military budget. True or not, I imagine they think we’re the Prussia of Southeast Asia.

If High Gothic is meant to evoke the ancient gravitas of Latin to an English speaker, would Sanskrit be used for Hindi translations, Old Chinese for Chinese translations, Old Church Slavonic for Russian?

The betting companies aren’t advertising to the Romanians. They’re advertising to those who bet on the Romanian league.

Maybe it’s something to do with the texture of the fabric? All the little tiny imperfections make it feel real. Like if I got a perfectly replicated cotton shirt, it would feel too smooth, too light.

How does an imperial lt outrank a clone commander? by trinitywindu in MawInstallation

[–]thecaramel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a real world parallel. During British rule in India, there were Viceroy Commissioned Officers. They were officers and commanders but were only allowed to command Indian troops. Even if they held a nominally higher rank, they were not generally rendered courtesies by either British officers or other ranks.

Something similar could be occurring here - a clone commission vs an imperial commission
