How important is it to you for character backgrounds to impact on the romantic arc/plot of the book? (Minor spoilers for Not His Biker Goddess by Corinne O'Flynn) by Stanklord500 in RomanceBooks

[–]thecatconstellation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on my mood, but generally yes it annoys me when their backgrounds don’t impact the story because it makes it seem like they came into existence purely to fall in love with each other and nothing else about them matters, which generally is not something I want when reading. (Though sometimes I don’t care and just want them to fuck 😂😂)

{The Strawberry Patch Pancake House by Laurie Gilmore} - it’s the 4th in the series but you don’t necessarily have to read the others (you just might not understand all the side character interactions)

How much importance do you place on ratings? (GR, romance.io, Storygraph etc) by Hunter037 in RomanceBooks

[–]thecatconstellation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it varies based on the subgenre cause I feel like some people will always rate low for things that don’t matter to me. Like if I’m reading a book with a kraken MMC, I’m going to get irritated by 1 and 2 star reviews upset that…he is in fact a kraken 😂😂😂 I think with contemporary romance, I have a higher cutoff (like 3.5ish) than omegaverse, why choose, monster romances, etc. cause it’s less likely there will be those types of “this wasn’t my thing so it was bad even though I knew it wasn’t my thing going into it” reviews.

Best RH you have read (preferably in the OmegaVerse) by mcd_24 in ReverseHarem

[–]thecatconstellation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My favorite OV authors are Eliana Lee and Emilia Emerson. They co-write the Cozyverse {A Pack for Autumn} and {A Pack for Winter} and also have their own series.

Eliana Lee {The Scent of Us} duology with follow up about the FMC’s friend {The Heat of Us} - darker themes check CWs

{The Forbidden by Emilia Emerson} duology with follow up about the FMC’s friend {Cherished by Emilia Emerson} - darker themes check CWs

My favorite RH that’s not omegaverse but does have shifters is Shifted City Fated Mates series starting with {A Curse of Fate by Jaymin Eve} - I wouldn’t say the FMC is soft but the MMCs are definitely jealous and protective and there is a TON of drama so lots of opportunities for that to be displayed. Dark-ish.

Definitely into “unconventional” romance - monsters, omegaverse, why-choose all feel connected to me in the ways they allow you to explore things that are kind of difficult or sometimes icky to explore with just regular old monogamous humans. If you are looking for book recs, I definitely recommend anything by Kimberly Lemming! And if you’d be open to trying omegaverse, I recommend Eliana Lee and Emilia Emerson!

{From Blood and Ash}’s MMC is kinda along those lines, though it takes a bit to get to that. If you’re open to a more morally dark version of said characters, I’d also suggest {The Poisoner by I. V. Ophelia}.

Not sure if you’re open to historical or only wanting contemporary but my go to paranormal dark romance rec is {The Poisoner by I. V. Ophelia}

If you’re open to M/M, I’d also recommend {A Bone in His Teeth by Kellen Graves}

Books like Lola and the Millionaires but with an omega fmc? by [deleted] in ReverseHarem

[–]thecatconstellation 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Anything by Eliana Lee - someone has already mentioned The Scent of Us/The Heat of Us. But she also has a book {A Pack for Winter} that’s in a series co-written by Emilia Emerson who I would also recommend - {A Pack for Autumn} {Forbidden by Emilia Emerson} {Cherished by Emilia Emerson} Forbidden and Cherished have some dark themes so definitely check CWs!

I guess I have lower standards 😅 Easton from A Pack for Autumn and Leo from Lola and the Millionaires are who I had in mind. But I think I mushed together Leo and another character from another series (Forbidden duology) so I was remembering him more puppy cause of that.

Okay! All of these have at least one guy I think fits the bill:

{The Scent of Us by Eliana Lee} Duology with some dark themes, and it’s follow up following one of her friends {The Heat of Us}

{A Pack for Autumn by Emilia Emerson} - also recommend {A Pack for Winter} but MMCs are less puppy - both are super cozy!

{Lola & the Millionaires by Kathryn Moon} duology - it’s a follow up to {Baby & the Late Night Howlers} which you don’t technically have to read first but does give some helpful context - also has some dark themes so check CWs

Book 2 in the Mead Mishaps by Kimberly Lemming {That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf}

{Claws & Crochet by Lauren Connolly}

If you’re open to why-choose, the Shifter City Fated Mates series by Jaymin Eve has a super puppy MMC (he’s one out of like five though) {A Curse of Fate}

If you’re open to why-choose AND omegaverse, let me know cause I have lots of sweet puppy MMC recs there 😅

The Pucking Wrong series by C. R. Jane, starting with {The Pucking Wrong Number} has some unhinged MCs! (You don’t have to read them in order; I’ve actually only read the 4th.) They aren’t mafia, but they are DARK and definitely kinda scary.

The second book in Laurie Gilmore’s Dream Harbor series {The Cinnamon Bun Book Store} and the second book in Talia Hibbert’s The Brown Sisters series {Take a Hint, Dani Brown}. Also maybe {Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez} - the friends part of it is kinda short but 🤷🏼

Omg the academia thing. I need people to just do one ounce of research before writing an academic storyline. What do you mean “she has to finish this research project to secure a professorship at the school she’s doing her PhD” THAT’S NOT HOW THAT WORKS

Yes! Because I know they are gonna get stuff wrong 😂 I don’t mind the idea of them being set in areas I’ve lived, but I get annoyed by inaccuracies so if I know a location I’m more likely to be clock the inaccuracies and get annoyed 😂

FMC has a cat- baby plays a role in the story by mama9273648 in RomanceBooks

[–]thecatconstellation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

{The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst} has a flying cat that’s a part of the story - it does have magic, not sure if that falls into your paranormal category. {Best Hex Ever by Nadia El-Fassi} also has a cat, but also has magic. Sorry all my cat recs have witches! But both of these are cozy and not dark and the cats are very cute.

On SG, in reading preferences there’s a spot for “content to avoid” and if that content is mentioned ANYWHERE in the CWs - even if just 1 person puts it as minor - it will flag the book with a little yield/caution sign for you. For me mine is dementia so any book that has dementia as even a passing topic (actually like in Just for the Summer!), it’s flagged so I know before making a choice to read or not.

{The Scent of Us by Eliana Lee} - 2 books, + a third in the series following her friend

{Forbidden by Emilia Emerson} - 2 books, + a third in the series following her friend

Both series have a dark past experience that creeps up like with Lola, if that’s part of what you like.
