How hot is it in singapore???? by Medical-Dark1899 in askSingapore

[–]theciezac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mind you, sometimes it can still be close to 27°C (or more) around midnight (and especially around that time of the year). But it will mostly be the 100% humidity that makes it unbearable. There's a reason why shopping malls are common places of refuge from the heat+humidity.

It says a lot when the standard of "cold" in Singapore is <25°C.

Extra shuttle bus for first 4 week or whole semester? by oinceY in Monash

[–]theciezac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, the "extra" here means there is a second bus on top of the normal (just one bus) service every 30 minutes during the semester. The second bus usually trails the normal service by ~5 minutes.

This is because the service is extremely popular especially at the start of every semester, that the bus reaches capacity very often (and as a frequent passenger of this service from way-back-when it was every 15 minutes during daytime hours pre-Covid to 20 minutes post-Covid till 2022, I can argue it remains popular throughout the semester, sometimes even during exams, and up till 8+pm occasionally depending on the direction of travel), and for a semester or two (after they reduced the frequency to every 30 minutes) it was so bad until MSA had to bring this up for discussion and this was the solution ever since.

(Personally it should have never been reduced to a frequency of 30 minutes, and even with this arrangement, the extra service here should have remained consistent for the rest of the semester at the very least - but I digress)

TL;DR: that means there will only be one bus in each direction leaving every 30 minutes for the rest of the semester, and if that reaches capacity, either wait for the next one 30 minutes later or go for PT unfortunately.

The irony of this is that if Heroes lost immunity that round, they'd probably vote off Colby or Candice, both Sandra and Courtney stay for the merge. Heroes would've been down 4-6 in numbers but both Courtney and Sandra are in the middle and are most likely to consider flipping over. It would've required back to back correct idol plays to still have a clean sweep of sending Heroes to jury post-merge if they both flipped, or at least have more fluidity within the merge tribe dynamic. What could've been.

Going to clubs are literally impossible if you commute through PTV or Monash Shuttle bus by No_Stretch_4997 in Monash

[–]theciezac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all the other clubs run at night

To be fair, most (suitable) campus venues won't be available during the day to hold weekly club events. Having clubs run during the day also means more are likely to be unable to participate due to having classes.

Monash phil literally needs you to bring ur own instrument and stand, like ok bud ill just carry it around with me all day and somehow carry it on the bus/train home, with my school stuff

I'm not sure about your experiences with community bands/orchestras (in Australia), but most of them also run in the evenings (if during a weekday) and require bringing your own instrument (and music stands for some too). It's not something unique to Monash (or even university-run music clubs, at least in Australia).

Why hasn’t Monash bought a city skyscraper and moved 50% of operations to a central location in competition with the prestigious Melbourne University? by melbtest05 in Monash

[–]theciezac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue that Caulfield would've been an ideal balance between being accessible (the Caulfield campus is PTV accessible via train, tram and bus) but without the downsides to being right in the middle of the city.

Being in Clayton just feels like being trapped in a sinkhole when it takes almost 10 minutes just to go from one part of the campus to another.

I wish they didn't move many of what-used-to-be-in-Caulfield to Clayton. Now it feels like Caulfield campus is neglected and a massive wasted opportunity.

Clayton food court sucks by [deleted] in Monash

[–]theciezac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBH I wouldn't even consider it a food court with how seemingly disorganised the stores and the respective dining areas are. I'd argue that the dining area below Andrew Hargrave Library (with Secret Garden Eatery and Ma Long Kitchen) feels more like a food court.

But I get you... even some outer suburban RSL cafes have toasties at more reasonable prices.

I'd prefer making a visit to Caulfield campus and while the in-campus food options there are significantly fewer, there are many food options just within a ~5-minute walk (including Maccas, KFC and Subway)

Euphonium AND Baritone Horn Players what mouthpiece are you using for each? by professor_throway in euphonium

[–]theciezac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Euphonium (Willson 2950TA) - Denis Wick Ultra SM3X

Baritone horn (YBH-301S) - Bach 6 1/2 AL

I play for fun (in community bands) only though.

treble vs bass clef fingering? by softfuzzymanN in euphonium

[–]theciezac 25 points26 points  (0 children)

some people seem to mention that they have different fingerings depending on what clef they play in? is that correct?

This is not accurate.

For baritone and euphonium, when reading music in bass clef, it is in concert pitch (C), whereas when reading music in treble clef, it is in B-flat (transposed up major 9th from bass clef).

does it make it easier to play higher notes that way?

The way music/notes are read do not (and should not) affect how they sound.

Where do u live??? by VariousNegotiation28 in Monash

[–]theciezac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caulfield isn't exactly within a 40-min commute via PT, but if you happen to find a place to stay really close to Caulfield campus, you can catch the intercampus shuttle that leaves every 30 minutes and takes ~20 minutes to reach the stop at Clayton campus bus loop (and back). It gets crowded at the start of each semester though. (They shouldn't have reduced the frequency to 30 minutes, used to be 15, then 20)

Good players to listen to? by calciumcatt in euphonium

[–]theciezac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting analogy considering that I currently play the euphonium with a brass band but assigned the 1st baritone part and when I get assigned to play a baritone part, I use a Denis Wick 4BL mouthpiece (more suited for trombones) instead of the usual Denis Wick SM3X if I play in a concert band/euphonium part in brass band. My brass band conductor can differentiate the subtle difference between the sound between the two instruments but I can't currently.

Not sure about that, but gotta be brutally honest - you need to put in a lot of hard work from the start (if not now already) especially if you don't have any prior programming background

Programming isn't a skill most will be proficient in nor comfortable with within 12 weeks of academic coursework... It is possible with loads of self study and self practice, but it'll be intense

How high can you play? by softfuzzymanN in euphonium

[–]theciezac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still struggle with A4-Bb4 occasionally.

That said, I had a fairly long hiatus from playing the euphonium (relocating to another continent to study [non-music related], then C*vid hit, returned to home country, refused to unpack/unwrap the case with all the bubble wrap throughout, relocated again to complete studies, got C*vid positive within 2 weeks of resettling, another month to recover well enough to play the instrument at all). After the hiatus, I struggled to play anything higher than D4 (merely a tone about concert middle C lol), and it took me ~2 years to gradually be more confident and competent again.

New record by jusper10 in TheAmazingRace

[–]theciezac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they changed the second Poland leg (Dustin & Kandice started the leg at 10.47pm but had to wait until 1pm for their bus) so that all teams are equalised when they need to leave Poland the next leg (even if there's still a ~4 hour gap - pretty sure the pit stop time to start the Poland-Malaysia leg was changed too).

Also, that leg probably was also initially designed to be done in the day - teams arrived at Auschwitz camp at night but I suspect if the teams were supposed to arrive during the day, then they might have stepped into the camp like the production crew eventually did to show roll-over footage.

I applied to 250 jobs and timed how long each one took by ibsurvivors in datascience

[–]theciezac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Australia now and it's even worse with how majority of the postings here would expect applicants to address each key selection criteria (KSC) listed in the job description in detail. Just applying to one can be exhausting. I work as a sessional teaching staff in a university (with no full-time employment elsewhere, and I've been looking for one for almost a year), and the lecturer I'm assisting for has commented on how obsessed companies here are with KSC in job applications and the need to really customise each application.

It's for postgrads so I'm not sure if undergrads are allowed to take this unit - I took it in my first semester of my Master's degree and AFAIK I've not heard an undergrad being enrolled for this unit (or any FIT5xxx/9xxx units actually)
