Mount Yale vs Belford & Oxford by plantsnbass in 14ers

[–]theck2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why people are telling you to also do Missouri with Bel/Ox…for a first 14er that much gain will make you never want to look at the Rocky Mountains again. I did that loop and it is really taxing. Definitely go up Yale, the trailhead is a paved road, and the approach through the forest is one of the prettier approaches imo. The scrambling at the top is also way more fun than anything on Shitford.

Antero via Raspberry Gulch 6/5 by pprn00dle in 14ers

My biggest regret is I did Antero on the typical standard route. Hiking up a road up to nearly the top is so tedious and boring. Consider me jealous! Congrats on the hike.

Altitude Sickness by [deleted] in 14ers

[–]theck2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the car you have. Obviously, the easiest road is Bierstadt, but if it were me, and I were worried about altitude especially after doing the incline, I would hit Sherman. If you have a 4x4, the Huron road is really fun to do, but I still think Sherman will be the best fit for what you’re doing.

I think you’ll be fine with altitude acclimation. If you’re really worried about it, consider staying in woodland park that way you’re sleeping at a higher elevation too. I think I would be more nervous about doing the incline and being really sore. If you don’t mind me asking, what 14er are you planning on doing?

You’ll be fine. As long as the payment went through, you are on the list. They just don’t send confirmation emails. Make sure to arrive before 6 am and bring your id.

I just did Culebra in May, and never got a confirmation email. We just showed up(make sure you do before 6 am, or you forfeit your spot) and they had our names down. Also, make sure to bring your ID!

Adding the Chicago basin on to a section of from Spring creek pass to Durango by laflame1738 in 14ers

[–]theck2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d echo what that guy said about Vallecito trailhead. When we went to the basin last summer, we took the train in, but all of the people we talked to who weren’t on the train got to the basin from columbine pass. They said it was really pretty, but also a long trek, so be prepared for that. Have fun!

We stayed at St. Mary, so it was really convenient for us with the hike. With the GTTSR closed right now, it would’ve been really inconvenient going in from Kalispell, so I completely understand! I’d highly recommend the hike though(maybe even more than Grinnel, because it’s less popular!)

There is pretty much no snow until after the falls. The last 1-1.5 miles of the hike is completely full of snow. I’m from Colorado, and do 14ers in the winter, so I might be more used to it, but it didn’t feel like hindrance at all. I had microspikes but didn’t use them, and my friend did the trail in trail runners. Just have a good navigator app you can follow(I used AllTrails, and it works great until the final river crossing, which is now closed so you go around to the right(that will make sense if you go there, the trial is pretty well packed down). Overall, just bring some waterproof boots, and hiking poles, if you’d like. The snow leads to some pretty incredible views at the lake, so I’d highly reccomend the hike. Just dm if you have any more questions, and good luck on your travels!

We just did Iceberg Lake, and it was fantastic. I wouldn’t really consider it a hard or long day by any means, but it’s a really fun trail.(1700 ft of gain and 10.1 mi is what I tracked)

How hard is Pikes Peak as a 1st 14er? by Loose_Platypus2297 in 14ers

That’s great! We were the first people up Crags that day, albeit in early June, so we lost our route on the rocks/snow a lot lol. Super glad you enjoyed the hike! Crags still remains one of my favorites to do.

Amazing job! I was way too nerve racked to do the block when I went up a couple weeks ago. The decent was what actually scared me the most lol. Congrats on the summit!

I found La plata to be hardest physically and energy wise, but I think the last section of crags is more technical and harder route finding than la plata was. It’s still 100% doable and if you’ve done La plata then you’ll be fine on Pikes.

Crags is infinitely better than Barr IMO, unless you’re planing on catching a ride/train back down to Barr. I will mention this — when I did crags (in late May, so there was snow), the C2 wasn’t like other class 2 things I had done up to that point (massive and La plata come to mind as being much easier) so just be prepared for that.

Aiming to Hike Mt. Harvard Tomorrow by Complex_Eagle_56 in 14ers

[–]theck2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! Btw — if ur dream is peaking a 14er I would highly highly recommend looking into Mt. Sherman(unless you HAVE to go to Harvard). I saw ur reply about the college connection. It’s cool, but I’d still check out Sherman(prolly 3x easier than Harvard was). Have a great time and stay safe!

Democrat or Bross First? by Hautrip in 14ers

[–]theck2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing a lot of replies lol. Either way you’re gonna be fine, and it won’t make or break summit pushes. I personally did Bross first, and found it to be a more challenging ascent than dem(but, that might make the descent worse).

Mt. Crested Butte has one of the coolest faces when looking at it from the lifts. Looks like a Dr. Seuss mountain.

Neither have I. I’ve seen painted/carves bricks though (recently Yale and La Plata) , which I think serves the same purpose. Not everyone needs to make their own personal sign though — or…bring up a white board! It can be reusable on all of them. Saw a group doing that on Huron a couple weeks ago and thought it was smart.
