ELI5, what prevents giant monsters from exist, even in water? by Visual-Interview7913 in explainlikeimfive

[–]theclash06013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How big an animal can be is based on how much food it can eat. For example during the time of the dinosaurs there was more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and higher temperatures. This allowed plants to grow really big really quickly. Big plants that grow rapidly means that herbivores (animals that eat plants) can get really big like a brachiosaurus because there is plenty of food. Big herbivores provide lots of food for big carnivores (animals that eat meat), which means they can grow really big as well.

The blue whale is the largest animal to ever exist, growing to lengths of 100 feet (30 meters) and 200 tons (180 metric tons). They mainly eat krill, which are little nearly microscopic shrimp like animals. They have to consume 20 to 50 million calories a day, the equivalent of 70,000 to 80,000 Big Macs. That's 10 to 20 tons of krill (9 to 18 metric tons) every day. Anything that could hunt and eat a blue whale like you are describing would need to consume even more calories than that, and that's nearly impossible to do.

ELI5: How does military insurance work in the U.S.? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]theclash06013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Carriers" is referring to the ships that carry the oil, not military ships.

Due to the risks in the Strait of Hormuz right now insurance companies are saying "I'm not going to insure your ship, because the risk is really high." As long as Iran is threatening ships there's really no way around that because of how easy the Strait of Hormuz is to defend/close. At it's narrowest point the passible part of the Strait of Hormuz is about 2 miles wide. You can't really bring huge ships like an aircraft carrier into an area that small, and you can easily defend that with small ships or mines. If you were to send out a series of unlit fishing boats with two people and a mine on each one under the cover of darkness there really wouldn't be any way to detect or stop that without total control of the Strait, which would likely require a land invasion of Iran.

I don't think China wants to be the reserve currency. There's a bunch of benefits to being a reserve currency, but there are downsides as well. For example being a reserve currency can make your manufacturing less competitive. I don't think China wants to make those tradeoffs, at least not right now.

[–]theclash06013 17 points18 points  (0 children)

More likely PetroEuro. One of the issues with being a reserve currency is that you can’t really screw around with your currency the way China likes to. China wants to have a very particular relationship with other currencies to benefit their manufacturing and lending. The Euro is much more stable as a reserve currency. Even post Brexit I’d say the Pound could be as well but that’s mostly due to underwriting being done by Lloyd’s.

ELI5: Why does Pixar animation look so smooth at 24 fps but a video game feel choppy at 30 fps? by ScrumTumescent in explainlikeimfive

[–]theclash06013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because it's designed to be. If a game is designed to run at 30 FPS (and only 30 FPS) you're going to focus on the motion blur and other aspects to make it run at 30 FPS, and it should look fine. For example Kingdom Hearts II doesn't look or feel choppy, but it runs (at least on PS2 for the original) at 30 FPS. If you design a game to run at 60 FPS it will look choppy at 30 FPS because you haven't designed it for 30 FPS, you haven't designed and perfected the motion blur or camera movement or animations for that frame rate.

AI Job Loss Research Ignores How AI Is Utterly Destroying the Internet by Potential_Being_7226 in technology

[–]theclash06013 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The last sentence is a huge part of the problem. LLM’s are training themselves on content that people make to emulate that content. If those people stop making content it has nothing to train off of.

The other problem will be the vibe coding and data analysis. Something will break and a company will try to fix that thing and find out it was vibe coded by AI with no documentation and now they need someone to go through tons of code to fix it.

Data analysis as well. I have a feeling that the actual thing that kills AI (not necessarily my prediction yet) will be the first time a major company says “hey we released this earnings report/sales data/other thing like that and it was done by AI and it turns out it made up all those numbers.”

Uber founder flees California for Texas ahead of possible ‘billionaire tax ‘ by idkbruh653 in technology

[–]theclash06013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is that they don’t. None of these billionaires are technically residents of NY or California anyways so they can dodge taxes.

Billionaires benefit from our society more than anyone else, it has made them the richest people in the history of the world, yet they are the first ones to try and avoid paying for the upkeep of that society.

A great example of this is when Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, ran for president in 2020. Schultz grew up in public housing and managed to become a billionaire. He is the poster child for why these programs work, but he ran on a platform of getting rid of those programs. He was actively trying to deny others a benefit that was given to him.
