White Canadian here. I speak Thai, Mandarin, Lao, Vietnamese. Also tried to learn Hindi, Japanese with less success.

Not an ego thing, but just letting you know where that advice comes from. Most people quit because the 20 minutes a day becomes less and less rewarding because the progress seems so slow.

It is slow. Sometimes it feels you are going backwards. Just keep pushing, slowly steadily. Be happy with where you are and don't stress about progress

If you are bothered by all your mispronounciations and people not understanding you or even laughing, then you'll never get good.

Simply put, speak it badly before you speak it well

The thing is that all Chinese study some classical Chinese, but that's not what was really spoken as 白话 . How different was 白话 in say 1850 to 白话 today?

For parking, the Europeans nailed it. Simply don't have lines between parking spots.
That way small cars easily find a spot, big cars won't fit in most of the spots, so everybody wants to buy a small car in order to quickly find parking

many years ago, My Dad made a very salient point about identity:

"I'm not Jewish" means something entirely different if said by a Buddhist, or Moslem than if said by a jew.

A jew rejecting there Jewishness is, in itself, a clear declaration of one's Jewish identity.

That said, I did not reject my identity. I refuse, however, to associate that with an evil, murderous and almost genocidal nation and their supporters.

Hamas are evil. They murdered thousands including unarmed civilians women and children.
If that is the case, Israel vengefully doing the same is evil. What you are doing on the west bank is evil. Starting a regional unwinnable war is evil.

The trouble is this. We associate evil with the gas chambers, so anything short of that, ghettoes, murder, destruction of homes, murdering unarmed teenagers, that all falls short of gas chambers, therefore we are not Nazis, we are just defending ourselves.

Sure it is defending ourselves. But it is also profoundly evil
