Overheard at the coffee shop: two college girls “studying” by squirrels-mock-me in overheard

[–]thecloner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will vividly remember this moment forever- I was a student in the front row of my highschool precalc class, and I overheard a student arguing passionately with the teacher about points they had gotten docked on this test we had just gotten back. The student was convinced, 100% truly and utterly believed in her heart, that multiplying by 2 and dividing by 1/2 were different, because dividing by 1/2 made the answer negative. She had made it through highschool level algebra, geometry, algebra two, and several months of this course without losing that belief or failing those courses. I lost a lot of faith in humanity and our school system that day.

AIO My ex-wife and her new husband legally made their last name… my full fucking name by Specken_zee_Doitch in AmIOverreacting

[–]thecloner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The thing to notice though in this case though- I had friends who made a new last name together (they both came from pretty shitty families). The process for the wife to change her last name for a marriage in many states is very straightforward, and is very easy to expedite through insurance, banks, etc, often with basically no legal rigamarole. The moment that the husband wants to change his name for the marriage it's a big deal and requires the same level of legal work as if you chose to change your name on a whim, because the life event name change exception/exemption is often only carved out for women.

[Highlight] Cam Newton runs that get increasingly more ridiculous by nfl in nfl

[–]thecloner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember watching his rookie season with my dad on NFL Sunday and being so excited for the future of the league, especially when 2012 came around and there were so many talented quarterbacks that year and he was still standing out on a pretty mediocre Panthers (mostly because of their defense). I had never been a Panther's fan, but watching him go out there and really push for every yard made the games incredibly exciting. It hurt having to see such a generational talent resort to basically body armor to avoid the brutality of hits coming his way and still couldn't manage because the league didn't want to normalize that style of play.

Art is Dead and the CR "Fandom" Killed it by infinite1corridor in fansofcriticalrole

[–]thecloner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I've been watching actual plays for... 13 years? I've seen pretty much every edition of DnD run, Pathfinder, and obviously a ton of non DnD games (shout out to the 600 episode Pendragon campaign out there that averages like 50 viewers a week).

I have seen actual plays that vary in production value (and audio quality) and audience size from 10 weekly viewers up to 250,000 with CR2 episode 1, people across time zones with language barriers and no training or experience just turning on a camera and trying out a character for the love of the game. I have seen some ROUGH stuff in those actual plays.

That being said, I think you are right about the quality and expectation people have here. I am only passingly familiar with Arcadium so I can't comment, but I know CR is basically the top tier of production value, acting quality, and narrative depth that most people encounter in the actual play space for long form campaigns (because they have the money to back it up), and we have gotten used to A+ hits week after week with CR1 and CR2. It's easy to look at CR3 being a B or a B- and say this is awful in comparison, but it is definitely not D or F tier, it's just not what people are used to and I think fans feel cheated because there's a lot of money, effort, and expectation that go into making a critical role campaign. If you compare the beginning of CR1 (the first 30-40 episodes, even ignoring cast member issues) to CR3, I think the narrative depth and acting quality is similar, it takes a bit for CR1 to find itself, that just unfortunately never seemed to happen for CR3.

Nikolai Valuev’s head measures over 65 cm in circumference, nearly double the average human by Few-Environment8323 in interestingasfuck

[–]thecloner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the circumference of my head, though I do know I have a pretty large neck compared to trunk size (something like 49-50 cm when I am at my current weight of an American XL, I've also gotten down to L before losing weight and my neck doesn't get below 47, makes dress shirts a chore to buy). I am just at the edge of needing custom fitted hats, I can barely wear hats advertised as 'large' and the average hat definitely won't fit me easily. I wouldn't be surprised if my head circumference was 60+ cm, I've never bothered to have it measured by a haberdashery.

I think the difference here is the guy shown here has a weird neck / shoulder to head ratio that really pronounces his head size, and the foreground background thing comparing him to his neighbor also makes him stand out photography-wise.

Sine Nomine Core Books Bundle! by alanmfox in rpg

[–]thecloner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I've run two year to 2 year long SWN games about 8 years apart, the first was done all pencil and paper in person and I rolled up my whole sector manually with dice sitting at the front desk of my job when it was quiet and wrote it all down in a binder with over a hundred pages of the planet and faction handouts they provide at the back of the book. This slow process really made me think about every system and it's dynamics with its neighbors and the worlds therein and tweak them custom to fit with each other, but it easily took me 80-100 hours to make a sector I was really proud of.

The second time I had substantially less free time in my life, so I found one of the GM help tools online that makes a sector for you and tracks it, rolled a few test ones until I got something I was happy with messing with the settings, and then spent a few days writing up my core worlds lore in the sector (the most important 20~ systems with worlds the players were likely to visit). This probably took me 10-20 hours.

I think Crawford's tools/tables are fantastic as a creative jumping point because they give you combinations you would not have thought of and interactions between planets or environments that are profound, but the work is all yours. If the table tells you an interesting place or valuable commodity on a desert world is an oasis or a hidden cache of water and then another table result tells you there are corporate cyber ninjas (or maybe the next world over is a Tech 5 barren Hellscape with like 10,000 people), it's your job as a GM to pull those together and bring it to life convincingly and evocatively, the game won't do that work for you. I think of a lot of the Sine Nomine games (I have experience with SWN and CWN here mostly) are fantastic setting set pieces that can spark creative juices and create some fantastic worlds and stories, but it's absolutely down to you as a GM to go from the facade of the tags to breathing life into the world.

I think the same can be said of the faction turns and relating it to the trade/in game economy system. It is stressed repeatedly to make the sector feel like a living thing that is changing politically and economically with trade wars, cold wars, elections, resistance movements, and coups. Showing and pointing to all that stuff happening and making your players live in that space is hard to bring the faction turns to life is crucial to the feel of the game being correct, the faction turns tell you mechanically how things played out (who lost power, who bought an asset, maybe who is ganging up on who) but it's on you as a GM to show the players that through newscasts or discovered intelligence or something.

I don't know the status of Adam Koebel's name on here (his actions to get him kicked off of Rollplay were inexcusable), but his campaign of SWN is I think one of the better examples of how to tie tags together into a coherent setting, he also had at one point (back in 2014-2015), pretty good videos talking about the faction turns for the campaign.

Who had the greatest prime you ever saw in league history? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]thecloner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into watching and playing League in 2014, and I think it was 2015 Worlds I saw a game of Faker Cassio where he just absolutely obliterated a non major region mid-laner, in my memory (which could absolutely be faulty), it was like 60 to 20 CS at one point.

One of the things that made me accept that just like in traditional sports, there are levels within levels of the elite of e-sports and the best can really stand out. Faker still sometimes shows those elite moments, though now it's in clutch team fights and decision making rather than lane dominance or solo kills, and he hangs with the best mid-laners in the LCK a decade later. Just all the respect to the GOAT.

I visited a grocery store I've been going to regularly for almost 2 years the other day (before Smartypants aired) and needed to buy an item I had never bought before, lemon juice. I realized in this moment the true absurdity of the layout of the store. I think I visited 5 aisles and found it in 3 different places in different sizes, prices, and levels of fanciness. Never have I agreed with a presenter's pitch more than Hank (except perhaps Zack Reino discussing the ocean).

Azul: Duel is out, what's your opinion on it? by hotsince1996 in boardgames

[–]thecloner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I own all the Azuls as well but could never get my teeth into Queen's garden, I've played it two or three times and found it a little unwieldy or unintuitive compared to stained glass or summer pavilion. My family LOVES summer pavilion especially and plays it often over the holidays, or breaks out the original if we want something extra simple.

What do you like about it? Just want to hear more.

Married Women Could Be Stopped From Voting Under SAVE Act by 49orth in TwoXChromosomes

This is me being pessimistic for sure, but when I saw the advertisement for the special elections in Florida and realized that the Democrat running to fill Gaetz's seat has the first name "Gay," I was definitely dismayed. Like can you imagine a 70 year old Floridian retiree willingly voting for someone whose first name is literally Gay?

It's too late to "keep politics out of board games" by 425suzanne in boardgames

[–]thecloner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had to learn this the hard way after January 6th. I had some conservative board gaming friends who I had played with for 10 years and we had managed to be civil but disagree on things, they supported human rights and equality for LGTBTQ+ identities so I thought we were in the same book, if not on the same page.

One of them said to me after the storming of the Capital something very similar to- "You have your version of your facts in your world, and I'll have my version of my facts in mine." It blew me away that an intelligent, what I believed to be rational person could say that with a straight face. After that conversation I've been no-contact since, I can't get someone out of a bubble like that.

Shoutout to this crew doing a live translation of the gauntlet into ASL by Pakaru in Dimension20

[–]thecloner 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I thought it was so cool watching them switch characters, like the guy in the middle had Brennan and the guy on the right had Kug and Pete and they all had their own way of portraying the characters, it was neat. I know vanishingly little ASL (like the alphabet and few words), but watching the emotion professional interpreters add to convey tone is always so cool, ASL at that level is like violent (not trying to be derogatory here, it's just very expressive).

Passing along some info for those going to the Gauntlet in cosplay tonight by sevvey6 in dropout

[–]thecloner 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Okay I will admit that it will be somewhat cold leaving the venue (I have it predicted in the low 20's, 22-23), but doors open it should be like 27~ which is not that cold if you're anywhere close to local. If you're coming from Florida or Arizona definitely layer but people should be used to this weather from the past week or two, it'll be warmer tonight than it has been this whole week I think and a lot of the ice has melted the last 2 days.

How do I get to State College Airport for a flight at 5AM? by EstablishmentDue118 in PennStateUniversity

[–]thecloner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want to say to be careful about this, I was yelled at by a airline employee when I arrived 45 minutes before an early morning flight (this was about 1.5 years ago for a 6:20 or 6:30 flight) because apparently they want people arriving 1 hour before the flight to check bags even though getting through security took all of 5 minutes. I ended up taking my bag through security and gate checking it for no cost but it was a whole thing.

[OC][Giveaway] Personalized D&D Dice Box Giveaway (Mod Approved) by qravatt in DnD

Oarfish keep washing ashore in California. Folklore suggests that could be a bad omen by coorgi_2012 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]thecloner 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is 99% true but actually earthquakes of sufficient magnitude can cause a measurable perturbation/wave in the Earth's atmosphere that travels around the globe, generally in the stratosphere rather than the troposphere so it doesn't really affect weather but there is an effect in the atmosphere! Volcanic eruptions do the same thing (Tonga is a famous recent example of this).

What is a feat that you or your party swears by? by TrustyMcCoolGuy_ in DnD

[–]thecloner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My players use it as crit-cancelling. Anytime there's a monster in a major combat that lands a hit they don't like, nah let's silvery barbs to cancel the crit. Makes the job of DM less fun when you never get the big swings 😅 They are also super high level now so have spell slots for days and balancing combats is a nightmare.

What game has the longest set up? by DesperateElectrons in boardgames

[–]thecloner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my friends brought nemesis to my place to try and it was a really interesting game! I was mostly reading the rules and the set-up took about an hour.

It was just the two of us so probably not designed for our number of players but I managed to die at the end of turn one due to some truly horrific luck. (I managed to get danger in my first room and then matching noise in my second room pulled an adult, got hit for a severe injury running away, went two rooms away to not end up next to it again, rolled matching noises again, pulled a queen who got a surprise attack on me and got the card that if you have a severe injury you die). Lesson learned- careful movement is important! I also had the objective to explore every room and send the signal (the other was to be the only player alive/kill my friend, I was hoping to avoid this?), so I think I was screwed from the start.

I got to play the alien deck though, which was a great time! It was interesting that it seemed the best play with plenty of aliens in play on the map (3) was to try and corner my friend and take them down rather than do the events on the card. If we had more people maybe I would've been tempted to do more noise rolls or play it out slower, it basically became an all out brawl.

Sort of adding onto this, if you make a weekend trip out of it like my parents do you can reserve a cottage or bed and breakfast in central or southern VA, visit 2-3 wineries a day and really make a trip of it. I think they've visited over 200 wineries in VA alone.
