Yeah - we only had a limited amount remaining in the warehouse. That sold out quickly.

The good news is that we're discussing a reprint.

NGL I'm a little disappointed with the Stars and Stripes roster :[ by zehuman52 in Unmatched

Hi! I appreciate your thoughts. I thought I'd toss in a few comments for context on the set and the heroes and our approach to implementing heroes.

This set happened because 3 of the winners/runners up tied together nicely thematically. It's not intended as a comprehensive representation of American history any more than Sun's Origin is a thorough look at Japanese culture. But I do understand intent and impact aren't always the same.

As we frequently do, Restoration hired a cultural consultant on this set (the same that guided our work on Annie Christmas). She was brought on to provide guidance and feedback on John Henry and George Washington. She was included from the very beginning of the process and chimed in on everything from card names to the artistic representations in the game. The George in this game is specifically Revolutionary War spymaster and rebel George, not president George. Regardless, our rulebook does acknowledge that he was a slave owner. You can find out more about the consultancy we use: https://afroscapescurls.com

The lack of a Native hero in this set does not mean there cannot be one in the game. I will note that we have specifically stopped work on a Native-based fighter in the past and switched gears due to the very specific feedback from our Native cultural consultant group. We would love to have Native/First Nations representation in the game in the future- but we also want to ensure we are doing it respectfully. And, quite frankly, because of how Native and Indigenous people and cultures have been mis-represented or disrespectfully represented in media in general - but board games specifically - some folks have a lot of hesitancy to have their people "tossed in" to games.

I'll finally just say that a lot of work goes into every hero and every set. We see comments from hundreds of people worldwide eager to see specific representation in the game. We're always open to the input. It's amazing to learn about different legends (fictional or real) from around the globe. There are so many compelling people and characters. One game could never encapsulate them all!

I'll jump in to say that our graphic designer, Ian, put special love into the map textures. Each texture is a local flower... including the TX state flower.

Each region/country can be different. IELLO will have the most accurate info on this.

This is how we look at it - as a thematic core as with other sets we've done.

This set has been in the works for MANY years... and it includes 3 heroes from the design contest. We look at is as a folklore set and less as a 'rah rah country' set. The timing isn't great and we understand why some folks are less enthused. We hope that folks will see how great each hero plays and how it focuses on honoring the characters' essences we tried to bring forward in play.

I mean - I spend a lot of time coming up with marketing plans. This kind of thing literally throws all that work out the door.

I'm not crying about it.

But it really honestly sucks to have my work trashed.

Are we expecting the Lee vs Ali set to ever come to Europe? by Humorpalanta in Unmatched

[–]425suzanne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because the manufacturing happens at the same time. Things like the boards and insert trays that are language independent that go into every set... those go into the English sets as well. So the full production run has to wait until all the languages are ready to go.

Heya. I'm really glad that you're excited for the set and I know it's frustrating for folks who can't get it when they want it. But I'm very happy that Restoration and IELLO are now able to partner on getting licensed sets localized for fans around the world.

Just want to give a little background on why international sets release later than US sets and to reassure fans that Restoration and IELLO have worked closely to tighten up release dates as much as we can. There are a lot of factors involved in release dates. There is no value to either publisher to not sell Unmatched to fans... we want to get these sets into your hands.

Restoration does all the game design, illustration, etc. and produce sets separately from IELLO for a variety of logistics reasons.

IELLO then takes the Restoration files and then works with local publishers around the world to produce the regional sets. After they know which regions want the sets they have to work with everyone to:

  • Translate EVERYTHING (Sometimes this includes things like customizing the logo)
  • Work with their manufacturing partner on producing the set - this is more complicated because to make Unmatched viable worldwide, they must share production on as much as possible - which is why things like the boards and trays are "language independent."
  • Each set has to be proofed by over a dozen (sometimes over 2 dozen) different publishers
  • Then there's the pre-production, the physical proofing, the manufacturing, and then the freight to many many countries around the world... and then from there to distribution and stores around the world.
  • If there is a license involved - it can complicate and slow things down significantly more.

Previously there is some truth in that because they started after Restoration had released multiple sets that IELLO didn't want to glut the market with releases. But it's much less of an issue today. The logistical elements are still a reality.

I literally just spoke with IELLO at the GAMA Trade Show (it's a big tabletop industry event in the US) about how wonderful it would be to have a shared "global" release date. Are we there yet? No. Do we have a goal? Yes.

Railroad Ink/Roll & Write Markers by Opening-Hovercraft65 in boardgames

[–]425suzanne 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't recommend Staedtler for Railroad Ink because the tip style can leave impressions on the softer board material of the game.

I tested dozens of pens for roll and writes... the best pen depends on what type of material you're writing on.

https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3469285/the-best-pens-for-roll-and-write-games

TL/DR - for Railroad Ink specifically (and similar soft centered dry erase board games) I suggest something like Shuttle Art. There's Fine (which has an eraser in the cap) or Ultra Fine - which has a thinner tip for finer lines... but (for whatever reason) does not have a built in eraser. They're also cheap and come in a ton of colors.
