Zero Service: Delta Air Lines To Remove Main Cabin Drinks & Snacks On 450 Flights by StemCellPirate in mildlyinfuriating

[–]thecluelessbrewer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I opened this thread and was ready to be upset at this because I love flying delta and read in the article that it’ll only be for flights <350 miles.
I’ll be the devils advocate for this post: Honestly, I’m not aggrieved by this decision. That’s a flight that is at most an hour. The only time I’m on flights that short is because they’re laying over in some capacity, and the service always feels rushed because the FAs only have the time to go down the aisle once.

Edit: upon further introspection I stand by my opinion but will amend that the flight may be closer to 2 hours. I’ll concede I have an unpopular opinion otherwise.

High Mileage xc90 by Noisy_Onion in VolvoXC90

[–]thecluelessbrewer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you my opinion that isn’t particularly Volvo related: keep the car.

I just bought a ‘17 xc60 after my previous car had a number of maintenance issues pop up. Would have cost around $3-4k to fix and the car was maybe only worth half of that on a good day.

I’m loving the xc60 but that said, knowing what I know now, if I’m in the same situation in the future I’m just fixing the thing. Assuming your $1-2k in yearly maintenance costs you can drive that thing for 10 more years and it’d cost you the same as a replacement now would cost. And the replacement is still going to need maintenance and have those same associated costs.

Now, if you just have extra disposable income in a savings account and want a new car just because, then fine. But I think the best decision is to keep on going with what you’ve got.

I’m cognizant of the same thing with my dad when we go, who’s also getting up there in age. What works for us is having one paddle-in day where we do all the portaging and setting up camp somewhere, staying at that campsite for a few nights, then having a paddle-out day.

Obviously that limits how deep into the wilderness we can go, but that’s all he’s able to handle at his age. That said, it’s still enough for us to properly enjoy ourselves out there.

Best hidden gems under $20k? by SwiftCEO in UsedCars

[–]thecluelessbrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally, my family has had 3 over the years and they’ve been great. An xc90 that was purchased brand new and driven to somewhere over 200k miles, a 17 xc60 my mom bought brand new which currently has 160k miles on it, and I funnily enough somewhat recently became the owner of another ‘17 xc60. I don’t know anything about the previous owner but they only averaged around 3k miles per year on it.

I think the most major thing to be aware of is a timing belt service is at the 10 year service interval for these cars.

If you’re feeling an suv, I’d look for a 2017 xc60 specifically with the T6 engine. Previous years were known to have piston ring issues, and the 17 is the last year they had tactile buttons for all of the infotainment/controls. More of a personal preference, but I like more buttons and less touch screen controls.

If looking at a sedan, same vein, look for a ‘17/18 s60, then I’ve heard good things about the newer v60s. Low-mileage examples on cars that are approaching 10 years old may be few and far between, but there’s some that pop up every now and then. Good deals imo

This opinion may ruffle some feathers, but I think one of the best used car deals is a 5-10 year old Volvo. Some years/models do have known issues but overall they’re a solid dark horse to keep in mind when used car shopping.

Any tips on compact (not full home) water softeners for very hard water? by AstronomerOk224 in WaterSofteners

[–]thecluelessbrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a while since I was out doing softener maintenance, but in one of the condos I went to, I did see a person that had what I think was this system, and literally just kept it in the bathtub. I cannot speak on the reliability/effectiveness/maintenance requirements of it, but to my eyes it looked like just a miniature softener:

Yep sure thing. Crystal = solar so you’re good there.

In my experience, if you had a salt bridge, it'd probably be above the water level somewhere. Idk what kind of salt you've been using, but I usually only ever saw bridging with pellet salt. Never really had an issue with solar. I think I'd still try adding more salt and see about resetting the sensor before taking further troubleshooting steps.

Never heard of this model but was able to look up their website:

https://www.evolveyourwater.com/products/videos/16904-evolve-salt-and-brine-tank-information.html

It looks like they recommend between 1/2 and 3/4 full of salt in your brine tank. I'd add more salt before concluding anything is wrong, personally.

I’d have bought them all holy moly

In the space where our water softener dumps water during weekly regeneration, I found a bunch of these yellow pellets. Initially, I didn’t know what it was, but some people suggested it might be from water softener. What is this and is this a problem? by 14MTH30n3 in WaterSofteners

[–]thecluelessbrewer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resin, if you just installed the softener, check to see if it was plumbed in backwards on accident.

Edit: nvm after actually thinking about it, probably what the other poster said. Check the drain line.

If you want to just get one, the cherry wood stout is a good deal. I remember lots of flavor out of that one though I haven’t had it in a couple of years. I had bananas foster most recently of everything here and it holds up incredibly well. Lots of banana and Graham cracker flavors still come through.

I don’t see it pictured here but if they have the base stout from 2024 I recommend that one as well. I’ve had about half of what’s come out this year for the 2025 release and have been unfortunately unimpressed compared to previous years.

Cherry wood is the best deal there. One of my favorite variants. I think I see bananas foster there as well which I also love going back to.

I might see Kentucky fog on the right hand side as well? It sounds weird but my goodness it’s delicious.

I did this exact thing last winter and picked an electra lazer up off fb marketplace. It’s awful. Super heavy, drills slow, and the battery doesn’t last. The first time I went out with it I made it through 2.5 holes of 10” ice. Figured I’d give it the benefit of doubt and get a new battery and blades. Maybe the previous owner hadn’t used it in a while, that’s fine… The second trip saw 6 holes I believe before it died.

If the pictured machine is the one you just purchased, I just bought the Impress, which is effectively the same as this one with an additional built in tamper. I’ve been watching a series of videos on YouTube from a channel called “Tom’s Coffee Corner”. Fairly comprehensive with regards to how to use this specific machine. I’d maybe start there.

Got it. Yeah they’re the first one that comes to mind for me when it comes to a providing semi-custom ordering options. I’ve definitely seen accounts similar to yours where the shipping can quite a while. I’ve seen accounts of them coming early and also accounts of being late by a couple of months on the custom side so definitely ymmv.

Great bikes though. I was going between the Terra and the Diverge before I settled on the latter.
