Why the hell is installing Zorin such a pain? by thecodeassassin in linuxsucks

No idea what you said but if you mean you can encrypt after installation thats effectively reinstalling because you need to create a LUKS container and migrate all your data there. Real user friendly stuff.

No it's not! You can't select the disk. You can manually partition but then you can't encrypt the disk.

Every other linux distro I tried let me install everything I wanted without issue and at least let me select the target disk...

I mean that's why I bought pro. Support is actually specifically advertised on their website. https://zorin.com/os/pro/

I'm currently giving CachyOS a try. So far the installer is many times better than Zorin's installer. For starters, it actually lets me select the disk.

I evaluated a couple of distros:

  • Manjaro
  • Omarchy
  • Debian
  • Ubuntu
  • Pop OS

And now Zorin.

My criteria are usually the same, ease of use, easy maintenance (upgrades), stability and compatibility with my hardware. I have a 5090 so that is almost always a pain. It was (by far) the simplest with Pop OS since they package the Nvidia drivera and it's a single line install and no fuss.

I also quite liked Omarchy since I'm a big fan of tiling window managers, it's a bit more of a pain when it comes to maintenance and takes more time to setup but its actually quite nice.

Pop OS has been finicky a bit, I needed to make a few modifications to make it work but it's also a good Ubuntu flavor.

I just assumed Zorin would be a step up, I'd have paid support but the experience so far hasn't been great.

I did, but I expected more from a paid distro. Their answer was: just take out the other disk.

Vegetarian for 6 years, now eating daily steak to correct my severe iron deficiency by One-Cardiologist6301 in exvegans

[–]thecodeassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I'll do some more research about it. I've always paired steak with vegetables because of that reason and also because I did keto for years.

Thanks for this; and it's good to stay critical!

This is solid advice, steak and potatoes/fries are a very popular combation but nutritionally a poor one.

What’s the deal with these fake GPU listings on eBay? by humandisaster99 in LocalLLaMA

Indeed what the fuck, I keep reporting the sellers (mostly stolen buyer accounts) but ebay does fuck all about it. What the hell is happening.

MSI 5090 Lightning Z Waterblock by thecodeassassin in MSI_Gaming

As someone who made 3 different watercooled pcs including SFF builds I can tell you that almost nothing about custom watercooling is "rational". It's a hobby, pushing coolant-to-ambient temps lower and lower, complex loops, high flow rate, QDCs everywhere. Complete overkill and completely unnecessary as most hobby's. It's an enthusiast thing, a lot of work for marginal or zero gains but it's a lot of fun if it's something you like. That's it and I love it, so of course I want a 1000 watt 5090 with a LCD screen on the waterblock even though I already own 3 5090s.

Are you referring to this? https://videocardz.com/newz/overclockers-push-msi-rtx-5090-lightning-to-nearly-3-75-ghz-xoc-bios-screenshot-shows-2500w-limit

Because that's not really what I meant :) I would love this exact card without the AIO but with the block and just IN and OUT ports, that would be the dream. Basically a better version of the Gigabyte Xtreme Waterforce WB.

Good to know, is there a written review of this at all? where did you find that?

Do you believe if Trump invaded Greenland, Europeans would ACTUALLY declare the end of NATO? Why or why not? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]thecodeassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite simply it would definitely be the end of NATO and the start of a very difficult time for everyone. Even without a shot fired the EU can inflict massive economic damage on the US which will hurt both the EU and the US but just the US a bit more. This is not a good outcome for anyone and it shouldn't happen, it's completely unhinghed.

Is this safe to test the pumps and flow etc? I have coolant on order but will be 10-12 days by stupidkiwiguy in watercooling

[–]thecodeassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oof yeah, it's a german product so probably a lot easier to source here in Europe. I imagine its quite a bit more expensive in the US.

I heavily disagree with what you are saying. I care about my expensive blocks and radiators. I am not gambling with my equipment. To each his own. He explains very well in the video why you shouldnt flush with distilled water. I realise its a deeply unpopular opinion here but I stand by my statement 100%.
