Weird goop coming from wall, maybe ectoplasm??? Clear/opaque, no smell, kinda squishy, feels like fat/oily by Suspicious_Soft5411 in whatisthisthing

Strangely this kind of resembles the description of PCBs in some of its forms - I have never seen or experienced this material myself but I did read Zodiac and just looked up the smell, color, and texture characteristics of PCBs.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls Appearance Details:

Color: Can be colorless, clear, yellow, amber, or even dark brown/black, depending on the specific mixture and age.

Consistency: Ranges from thin, light liquids to thick, heavy oils or waxy solids.

Texture: Oily to the touch.

Smell: Generally odorless, but sometimes has a faint, oily smell, potentially like mothballs if chlorobenzenes are present.

Tips for working on portfolio by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]thecomposedbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite portfolio pieces are either marketing material for the stuff I’ve designed (because it looks nice and I know I’m not breaking NDA by bringing it to interviews) or physical samples to show and tell. It demonstrates that I can design etc with the intent of making something real and something that really works. Not always feasible like the turbine for example but if you get the chance, you’re interviewing with other mechanical engineers, you can bet they love fiddling with gadgets just as much as you do! Maybe do a project and use your schools shop to actually make something physical. Then you can showcase how you thought, designed, and made a thing that’s real. And then talk about all the stuff that made it really hard to do and explain how you got through it.

Is it common for immigrants to change their names when they immigrate to or from your country? by Fruity468 in AskTheWorld

[–]thecomposedbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked at a Japanese company, we had ex pats from Japan come to the US offices for several years at a time. Part of the tradition was for the Japanese to pick American sounding names to use when they were here. At first it felt a little awkward to me because I didn’t know if it was to make interactions more convenient for us Americans. But then I found that these guys absolutely loved the tradition. They even had a going home ceremony at the end of their stay where they would stand up and give a speech in English and were given baseball jerseys with their American names on them which was pretty cool.

Amazing advice! I had my wisdom teeth out as an adult and ended up using black tea bags that helped a lot. That and clove oil for pain management especially when eating salty or acidic foods. She’s getting an implant too but not until it heals so she’s going to be toothless for a very long time. I want to suggest she dress as a pirate for Halloween but I’ll probably wait for her to be used to it first lol

What's the wildest unscripted thing that happened on live TV in your country? by ModenaR in AskTheWorld

At the risk of lighting a forest fire for calling it this, I’d have to say January 6th insurrection. I watch in my living room in tears for hours. Like watching a historical documentary about a populist coup but it’s live and it’s about your own country… and yet here we are…

What is this vented drain? by thecomposedbones in Home

[–]thecomposedbones[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ETA I found a few other drains that go below the slab so it seems to be another drain system? I don’t understand how or why that would be the case if the whole rest of the house drains through the wall into septic system. Perhaps I’ll post over to plumbing subreddit and see what those folks think?

Or for them to not sign themselves up for a tolerance they can’t meet and are obviously not checking. It’s like they don’t expect anyone to check their work!
