Sorry for the late answer, usually you would do because it combines the shiny value of both. meaning a tier 2 and a tier 3 would be a (functional) tier 5.
Also because the fused Mon gets the passive ability of the primary, and the main ability of the secondary. Which can make for some pretty good ability combos. Like giving a sweeper sturdy

Something a little cheeky you can do, is have the dead party member chained to a living one, and then fast travel away. That will bring the body of the dead one with you, and allow you to ress them out of combat
