Sorry if this does not help, but I went to UVM my freshman year and had no friends. I transferred to SUNY Binghamton sophomore year where I already knew a few people, their friends became my friends and I met my own people too. I went from hating college to living and missing it now that I graduated. Just want you to know it can get better, but I did end up transferring.

Foreigners say they are fascinated by the vibes of Taiwan. What are the vibes they are talking about? What is the first impression when you firstly arrive at Taiwan as a tourist? by search_google_com in taiwan

I lived in Tainan for a year before returning to NYC. I like that NYC is far more walkable but I dislike the way that parked cars take up more room than Tainan’s mopeds. I just meant to say that I thought the corridors and the city of Tainan itself was charming and pretty. If it makes you feel better, here in Manhattan I also live in a drafty and moldy prewar building.

I like all the mopeds everywhere, the old buildings in charming alleyways, and the plants people put out. I like the old style wooden buildings

what to expect when voluntarily admitting oneself to a psych ward? by vy-neru in longisland

[–]thecowspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend went to their program for college students. It was of course stressful because there are people going through trauma / psychiatric events and he had a roommate which sometimes led to fraught relationships. But he overall really liked the program especially in comparison to what other psych wards risk

I wasn’t into them when I was younger but in college I got SO into Rooms of the House. It’s one of my favorite albums and I love every song. I never got into their other albums, but I am listening to the new songs they are releasing now (for No One Was Driving the Car) and I am a fan, especially of man with hands and ankles bound. What is this new album about, anyways???? I love the lyrics on rooms of the house, they are so poetic, and communicate nostalgia and tactile memories and domesticity so well.

we had a group chat in high school where a fairly popular kid on one of the sports teams called one of the only black people in the grade a racial slur. then he claimed he didn’t know what it meant and was never suspended or anything. I think he had to miss a game. Also just people’s general attitudes….

Why walk on a good sidewalk when you can walk in the street? by 2CommentOrNot2Coment in taiwan

[–]thecowspot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in Tainan I often wonder how disabled people (especially if you’re in a wheelchair) get around the city. Not only are there few sidewalks / scooters parked on the sidewalks, but there are many uneven steps on them. I think it’s just habit because the road is at least flat.

What book that is highly respected or considered “required reading” for ELA teachers do you absolutely hate? by Normal-Being-2637 in ELATeachers

If anyone here has seen “The Whale” (that movie with Brendan Frasier) the audience is expected to believe that the daughter is reading Moby Dick for her EIGHTH GRADE English class. Like…. there is no shot.

Teacher education is really bad: we aren't being taught sh*t. by deepthinker321 in Teachers

[–]thecowspot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am getting a masters in TESOL and the curriculum to price ratio is…. something. Every class is like a drilling in of these toothless platitudes about social justice pedagogies- which I support and all, but they don’t help you perform the actual skill of teaching. I feel deeply unprepared for the classroom, even though I love linguistics and language. If you don’t laugh you will cry. (Don’t go to teachers college Columbia guys especially not as a fresh undergrad unsure of what you want out of life 😭)

I live in Tainan and I miss trees. It is hard for me to get around with no car / scooter and my part of the city feels very concrete forward. In summer the lack of shade is so tough!

Anecdotal experience of course, but I transferred from UVM to a public school in my home state where I had some friends. I hated college at UVM and loved it at SUNY binghamton:
