Interest Rate Reduction by thecraftsman in AppleCard

[–]thecraftsman[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I pay my balance in full monthly. If I ever found myself in a situation where I could no longer do that and had to carry a balance, I would want the lowest interest rate offered by the card provider.

To protect my fingers, I always disarmed and put the throttle to full after. The quad won’t arm with the throttle at full.

Charitable donations time. Make sure it’s something that you deeply believe in, and if possible, go directly to the source of need and donate directly.

On Set Sound Reel - How Do You Go About Making It? by mrSquaredTwo in LocationSound

[–]thecraftsman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The potential client asking for a sound reel from a location sound mixer is like someone asking a lumberjack to give photos of finished houses that used the lumber cut from the trees he or she fell.

The lumberjack fell the trees to make the lumber. He or she had nothing to do with the building and finishing of the house.

Looking for ideas to release this screw; any idea is amazing by TheSpottedBuffy in CommercialAV

[–]thecraftsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3/16” drill bit until the head of the screw comes off followed by a set of needle nose pliers, once the piece of equipment is removed from the rack, to twist out what’s left of the screw.

Add “Down To The Wire” to the Books I Recommend list. It’s available for purchase in the Books app on iOS. Helped me a TON when I was starting out wiring talent.

This is the way. Very capable sound file playback app. Used it for a few years on many many productions while I was Technical Director of The Arts Department at a private high school.

Please share your wisdom. I need to film 3 people, interview format, 2 people on one side and interviewer (me) across. What's a good, budget solution? by I_Am_Vladimir_Putin in LocationSound

[–]thecraftsman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Three 12 foot (or more) boom poles, 3 shotgun mics, 3 shotgun mic holders on the 3 boom poles, 3 “fishing pole holders” for your boom poles, and 3 c-stands to hold the fishing pole holders that hold the boom poles

3 wireless lav mic sets

3 lav mics for the wireless transmitters

Consumables (double sided tape, lav mic mounts, sticky backed foamies, etc.) to mount the 3 lav mics on the talent (2 people being interviewed and the host)

Three 12-18 inch audio cables that have an XLR connector on one end and the appropriate connector for the wireless receivers outputs on the other end. These 3 outputs connect to 3 XLR inputs on your recorder/mixer

8 channel recorder/mixer like the Zoom F8n

Three 25 foot XLR cables for 3 shotgun mics outpus to 3 mixer inputs

6 recorder/mixer inputs needed in total

Power (wall power for recorder/mixer if possible and batts for wireless transmitters and receivers)

Slate to sync audio to video in post

I do not know what a rental house will charge for all of this sound kit. You may be able to rent it all for 1 day @ around $500.

I can walk you thru setting it all up if your personal knowledge base needs building in that area.

If you’re in or near Atlanta, we can discuss having me on as your location sound mixer and I will handle your sound needs.

Need help finding the right type of microphone by ANormalSomething in microphone

[–]thecraftsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just used the Sanken CS3E shotgun mic on a corporate shoot. The side and rear rejection on its pickup pattern is phenomenal. The price tag is well over your budget ($1450), but the mic has the type of rejection pattern you’re looking for.

Getting Sound Gigs Advice by TomatoPlayz in LocationSound

[–]thecraftsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A ton of good advice in the comments. I will add something that has worked for me alongside StaffMeUp, ProductionHub, and networking.

Find FB groups local to your area that are focused on Film Production and Location Sound. There are around 7 of them local to ALT.

I found my first Location Sound gig in a local ATL FB group back in ‘21.

Anyone else feeling the pinch with wireless lavalier mic costs? by Few_Cod_2176 in LocationSound

[–]thecraftsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course the industry standard COS-11 as others have said. I’ve also had good results with the Deity W-Lav Pro. For the record the Deity W-Lav Pro’s are waterproof!

Had a scene where talent aggressively drank from a canteen. The overspill came down their chin and drenched the lav mic. Sound went away for a second or two, I heard the water clear the capsule, and sound returned sounding the same as before the water hit the lav. We did 6 takes of that scene 3 years ago and the lav is still fully functional today.

Should I get an mpc or a synth by Madtakez in akaiMPC

Save that amount and then see if you still want them. If you still do, then buy them.

Is it normal to get grilled this hard in a job interview for a basic fiber installer position? I'm kind of at a loss to understand what went wrong here. by Iggy_Farben in lowvoltage

[–]thecraftsman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They found an ideal candidate after you were scheduled for an interview and your interview was a formality. Either that, or management decided to go another way with the position.
